Three Cantors To Perform At St Peter’s Church
The Three Cantors, a group from the Anglican Church of Canada, will be performing for the first time outside of Canada at St Peter’s Church in St George’s on Saturday 26th June at an evening concert and again the next day at 4pm at a special Festive Evensong. Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Lady Gozney and the Bishop of Bermuda, the Rt Reverend Dr Patrick White will be present.
The brainchild of the Ven. Peter Townshend, Archdeacon of Waterloo and of the Church of the Holy Saviour, the Three Cantors was conceived almost a dozen years ago for a one-off concert to benefit the Huron Hunger Fund. Members of the group include the Rev. Canon David Pickett, the Rev. Canon William (Bill) Cliff and the Ven. Peter Wall. There’s also a “fourth “–organist Angus Sinclair, the chair of the Diocese of Huron Organ Committee and a church music teacher.
“Peter and Bill or I would often be asked to sing at diocesan events when we were at Huron,” explains Reverend Pickett. But when the archdeacon approached them, he says, “We all thought he was joking.” To their great surprise, 724 seats at the first concert, in Grace Church in Brantford, Ontario, were filled. “We didn’t think anybody would come,” he adds. “It was really humbling.”
Since that first sold-out show, more than 150 concerts and several bestselling CDs ago, the talented foursome remains a singing sensation. They continue to delight audiences through live and recorded performances of pretty much everything from folksongs and Broadway tunes to spirituals, original compositions and classic church favourites raising money for The Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund (PWRDF) at the same time. Their plan for the future? Keep going. “But this work has brought out the best of what the church is all about. We’re part of a great, big community.”
