Craig Cannonier’s 2010 Labour Day Address

September 6, 2010

Below follows the address given this morning [Sept 6] by the Leader of the Bermuda Democratic Alliance [BDA] Craig Cannonier for the Labour Day occasion, which focused on theme of being ‘United in the Community’.

My friends

To those who labour day and night to care for our children, to look after our elderly, to provide services to our visitors, to keep our island safe… to all of you I say it is because of you that I am proud to be a Bermudian.

For 400 years we have laboured for the rights of all. For 400 years we have struggled against injustice. And for 400 years we have challenged each other to live up to what it means to be a Bermudian.

And throughout these past 400 years we have overcome the obstacles, we have overcome the trials, we have overcome the tribulations and we are still here.

After 400 years of fighting our good fights, our just fights, our honourable fights, we are still here. We are still here, my friends because we know what we stand for as a people.

And the drumbeat will not cease, my friends. We must continue to fight the good fight. We must continue to choose our destiny because this is the legacy of our forefathers.

No matter how great the mountain, no matter how steep the climb, no matter how painful our history has been, we are here.

I want to remind you, my friends, that we have overcome divisions that could have destroyed this country. And if we did it then, we can do it now.

Let us, then, re-imagine our future with hope. Let us fashion this future together. A future of peace and tranquillity. A future of prosperity and social justice for all. Let us, together and with one voice, look forward to this future with hope.

Thank you and may God bless us all
