October 18, 2010

Neither rider was seriously injured as two spills were captured on camera during Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club action at the Southside Motor Sports Park yesterday [Oct 18]. Both bikes crashed after the long straight run, where riders can reach speeds up to 100mph, although both incidents occurred during practice rounds.

Cody Sousa-Saints is captured just after his bike hits the safety bumpers. Mr Sousa-Saints injured his wrist but was able to return to racing, finishing third in all three GP125 Class Races.

While I am always excited when the Bermuda Motorcycle Racing Club is highlighted in the press, I can only feel somewhat irritated that with all of the good racing that took place on October 16th, that crashes are the highlight.

As a club and as a member, we are trying to change peoples perception about motorcycle racing in Bermuda. We all understand that there are risks involved, however, there are also rewards.

Its just a shame that the talently riders were not highlighted on this day.

Although I understand your perspective, from our perspective crashes are in fact – news.

Few people/entities like them reported whether they be bike, boat, car, police crashes, but they are news, and we are a news medium. If our cameras are around and someone crashes [boat/bike/car/ski], it would be inherently bad journalism to ignore that.

Also, as a note – feel free to look back – since inception our coverage of motorcycle racing has been 85% positive, which has never attracted a comment from the org. None of the videos, photo galleries, highlighting winners etc ever got someone to comment, say thanks or anything or that nature.

As one of the riders featured in this article I see it from both sided, but I am not mad about this article at all! I apreciate every bit of coveredge you have done on us! Crashing is a part of racing, And as a local and international racer I know that spectators only come down and watch racing for two things! A fearce head to head battle and crashes. I want to thank bernews.com on behalf of the bmrc for everything that you have done for us along with everything that has yet to be done. its organizations like yours that gets young riders like myself in the spotlight And help make our dreams come true.
    thank you,
    Cody Sousa Saints.
