Court: Two Females Jailed For Assault

October 23, 2010

Two women, one 7 months pregnant, were sentenced to two-year prison sentences for attacking a 17-year-old girl, according to a ZBM news report.

In August 2010, a jury unanimously convicted 21-year-old Garrina Cann of Pembroke and 22-year-old Trimiea Roland of St Davids of wounding with intent to do grievous bodily harm. Both women have previous criminal histories.

Ms Cann’s lawyer said she suffered a set-back with the recent death of her brother. 22-year-old Gary “Fingas” Cann was shot and killed in Somerset in December of last year. Ms. Roland is 7 months pregnant with her second child and is due to give birth in December.

The incident occurred on February 2, 2010 in St. David’s. During the trail it was said that the victim, Brittany Symonds, was talking on her cell phone when Ms Cann asked to use it.

Ms Symonds said no, so Ms Cann beat her multiple times over head head with a stick. Ms Roland then smashed her in the end with a rock. The 17-year-old victim was hospitalized, with wounds requiring over a dozen stitches and staples.

The maximum sentence they could have received was ten years.

It’s amazing that all these incidents are related to some degree. Sad really. The only revolution we need is a social and and cultrual one that go hand in hand.

When I was growing up, there was nothing more sobering than humiliation and embarrassment. Perhaps if the legal systems today were allowed to actually post pictures and names of ALL these b%stard criminals maybe there may be some shame and people will start to act as civilized humans again. I do not agree with all this he or she is a minor we cannot put their names or pictures on the news. Stop it already! Start shaming these people back to reality or the world as we knew it is long gone.

    • Joe's Father says:

21 and 22 year olds are not minors. Most of these criminals are in their 30s. You clearly suffer from extreme stupidity.

  3. LA says:

good, lock them up , but more than likely they will re offend upon release, hopefully they get help.

There goes Ms Roland’s option of having a home birth…

    • hopefully you get in a situation wer you cant get help and as for the birth it was taken place in a comfortable room that looked like a hotel room and spoiled to the max was she also the joys of not having a bill when she was released was brilliant!they paid for everything. so that was a smart option dnt you think!!!!?STUPID

  4. Call as it is says:

    ONLY 2 years??..NOT LONG ENOUGH!

Magistrates and Judges need to give out longer.
Build another jail if we have too,it will also create much needed jobs.

I know the teen victim through friends. I saw her injuries and they were horrific.her skull was split open and she had huge staples across the length of her head. This beating was inexcusable and evil. I don’t feel sorry for either of these two criminals. In fact I think their sentence was lenient. I do however, feel sorry for Ms Rolands unborn child, who will have an ignorant bully for a mother.

    • you need a wake up call yourself im thinking it would have been nice if it was you the injuries wer done to lol hows that for an ignorant bully for a mother byyyyotch! wishing it was your head … for the mentioning of the child

  6. terry says:

Father Joe, who’s stupid. Please inform me.

  7. wow says:

considering these 2 lovely ladies both had prior convictions i can see how they only got 2 years for such an act.(insertsarcasmhere)

  8. terry says:

Reflections on a pond, in a mirror are the same. The pond may be smooth, the mirror may be mared with toothpaste and water but what you see is what you ‘got’.

Me? I would have sent them to Supreme Court for sentencing. Regardless of this womens pregnant condidtion or the others past.

Before you shoot the messenger, the message has been misdilivered ( new word) or stuck in a mail ( Male) box for too long.

    • I hope that you yourself gets a taste of the unjustly judicial system!!!! no one deserves to be charged and convicted for smething they did not do

  9. Marc Daniels says:

For clarity sake, both of these young women were, in fact, tried in the Supreme Court. The reporters erred in their article. The sentence was not 2 years but 4 out of the maximum of 10 years, which, as a matter of law, is reserved for more heinous or serious injuries/reasons for the criminal conduct. Bot of these women had strong mitigating factors which were not reported in this article whcih helped the court to determine 4 years as being an appropriate sentence. Not every matter that appears before the court is as black and white as the general public may think. The injuries and the facts leading up to this regretable incident, were not, in the opinion of the court, the most serious to merit a 10 year sentence. The names and pictures of both of these young women were publicized throughout the trial.

The state of crime in Bermuda is sadly skyrocketing. There is no doubt about that. Our society needs to get a grip on what is unfolding before our eyes, but have faith in the judicial system. It is not perfect, but it is, and will continue to be, a work in progress. Perhaps more of our concerned citizens should learn the law and fully understand the facts to understand the dynamics involved which result in sentences, before passing judgment.

    • bernews says:

Thanks for your post and legal insight Mr Daniels.

We understand the sentence was 2 years incarceration and 2 years `suspended` which, taking away fancy talk so to speak, appears to equate to actually being sentenced to spend 2 years locked inside a prison.

That is likely why all media reported it as 2 years

Please feel free to correct that if we are wrong…and confirm – will they spend 4 years in prison.

      Patricia

      • Peace and Love says:

@ Patricia..no they will not actually spend four years in prison. They will actually spend two and then they will be released, the other two years they will be on probation and if they re-offend within that two year probationary period they will have to than serve the remaining two years.

        • bernews says:

Exactly……and thats why we, and all other media, reported it as 2 years, as taking away the “legalese talk” – it’s 2 years in prison, just as you said.

  10. CanadianLuv says:

Considering the prior run-ins with the law 2 years is not enough…5 years at LEAST! for a violent offence. What a DUMB thing to fight over. These childish adults should receive a harsher sentence. Kids having Kids…Poor unborn child has No good role model -> and thus the evil cycle continues…

    • Canadianluv sounds like u have a luv for children in a sick way lol u need to take a look at ur self and get help for what seems to me your pedafile intentions>>>>now who is evil I hope you don’t have any kids
