The Police say that it appears that a taxi and a SUV were involved, and as a result both lanes of Harbour Road were temporarily blocked, causing traffic to be diverted.

  1. Call as it is says:

wonders if they were on their crackberries

Yup, first thing to check. Phone records. It seems to be a prerequisit to driving a car in Bermuda. Get in car. Start car. Once on the road get phone out & call somebody. Bermudians are such important people that nothing can wait those few minutes it takes to get somewhere & use the phone or, better yet, make the call before getting in the car.

Harbour Road was put off limits for all oversized traffic (‘H’ registration vehicles) 20+ years ago. It’s now impossible to get on Harbour Road at any time without large trucks in front or behind you. Although these 2 vehicles don’t fall into that classification they were uncommon back then , but the law should be ammended to extend to all oversized taxis and SUV cars. The police also seem to be completely unaware that this law even exists. They need to be brought up to date and enforce it. I’m on a bike and I regularly get pushed into the wall on my side by trucks and huge cars/taxis coming the other way , especially on the blind corners where they’re always half over into my lane.
Police .. Do you even know what the road laws are ? ?

Get a life. If this is your biggest concern then life must be good. You would be the first complaining if police were writing tickets for big trucks and holding up traffic. I’m sure in the grand scheme of things that big trucks are no big deal.

Maybe it’s a small issue to a sophisticate like yourself , but it’s no small matter to me when people a) don’t know the laws and b) it should be plain as day to anyone with a functing brain that maybe their ‘H’ registration truck is a bit too large for Harbour Road. I’d welcome seeing some trucks getting booked , no matter how long the delay for me.
Oh yeah , this island is plagued with huge problems , guns are illegal too , so are drugs , but this is a ‘law’ like all the others and an easy one to enforce.
Maybe one day when you get taken off your cycle by an oncoming oversized vehicle on Harb Rd or maybe have a spiffy expensive new car written off by a truck that shouldn’t be there you’ll see the light.

By the way , did you ever hear about how Mayor Juliani in NY got that place back on track by enforcing the ‘little laws’ then working their way up ?
        No ? Didn’t surprise me …

      • Squeezed says:

Actually, trucks of ‘H’ class and above are supposed to turn (east bound) onto Chapel Road and ‘H’ class vehicles heading west from Trimmingham Hill round a bout are not supposed to go beyond Pomander Road (Dingy Club). I’m not sure if it’s a law or a request but It seems to have been forgotten. I would hope that I would not be stuck in traffic (again) when a large truck crashes on Harbour Road again during rush hour. It has happened.

    • Tina says:

I agree, I am a bike ride myself and am tired of being ‘pushed’ off the road with these big trucks (cement trucks, tractor trailer and buses) taking up more road then they need and at the speeds they travel.

  3. Half-a-Clue says:

That’s the worst corner on Harbour Road. Not sure if a speed bump would help, but it would certainly curb the speed some people do through that twist.

How in the world you manage to have an accident in the slow moving traffic of the morning rush hour is another question!
