15-Yr-Old Girl Robbed at Gunpoint

November 6, 2010

In a crime that is nothing short of an outright disgrace, a 15-year-old girl was robbed of her cell phone at gunpoint this afternoon [Nov 6]. The incident occurred in the Par-la-ville area.

Bernews understands the young girl was approached by a male wearing a black hoodie. He brandished what appeared to be a gun which he then proceeded to put to her head and demand her phone. He took the phone and ran off.

The girl thankfully did not receive any serious injuries, however we understand she is understandably very upset.

Due to the late hour of this posting [11:36pm] we do not have the official Police statement, however will attempt to update with it tomorrow.

Anyone who may know anything about this terrible incident please contact the Police on 295-0011.

Update: To make a correction, this incident occurred on Par-la-Ville Road – not the park. We apologize for any confusion caused.

Update 2: Official Police statement, and eyewitness report posted here.

  1. fergie says:

Wonder why the police do not use decoys to catch some of these mindless thugs. This is a bad situation which does not seem to be getting any better.

  2. Southafrica says:

Bermuda is quite literally South Africa part II.

    • just curious says:

What are your specific reasons for saying that?

  3. Spikes says:

Southafrica is correct. Bermuda is getting like any other crime Capitol of the world.

  4. I'm shocked!!! says:

What is happening now in BDA??? I can’t believe it! When I lived there for many years, purse snatchings (while terrible for the victims, no doubt) were the worst that happened. Now, it just doesn’t seem to be safe at all… Par-la-Ville Park???? Come on – something has to give!!!! Gone is the reputation of Bermuda as a safe, quiet tourist destination. Killing the goose that laid the golden egg…. shame.

    • BDAnative says:

Totally agree. I worry everyday for the family and friends I have living there. The hoods are taking over.

  5. Soul says:

i agree with Fergie, who suggested decoys. Thats a great idea. it worked for the New York subways, because before that they had the worst problem controling crime there. you was always at risk. Now the whole atmostphere has changed.
So if visible uniform police aren’t present, perpetrators would feel unease carrying out these acts.
    Come on!!!
Lets not make or should i say keep things easy for this jerks.

Under cover cops……..is the solution. and in Bermuda it would be easy to catch these guys with this method.

  6. enough says:

Well, the idea could be a good one….a potentially lenghty one which may bear no fruit. I mean the bottom line is that most of us who live here have never been mugged and never seen a mugging so a couple of plain clothed cops wandering around would really be up against the odds to get mugged, although they would wander in area prone to these crimes and make themselves more attractive to thieves.

Add to that the Health and Safety of the officers (before you rant and rave about “that’s what they get paid for”..well maybe but making sure they won’t come to harm is a corporate liability. While we’re not the US(did I not read a story about an undercover US cop investigating our ex-Premier’s son who sued for damages when she posed as a patient to gain evidence of inappropriate touching and was herself inappropriately touched???), you would have to have colleagues handy to come to their aid and potentially have equipment on them to defend themselves and make the arrest.

Add to this the fact that most cops are known by someone (if not the perpetrator).

I think Bermuda is a tough dynamic to engage in stings but they did it once (Operation Cleansweep), no reason something similar can’t be done again with DEA or maybe brand new overseas recruits.

I do always laugh when I read about cops never being around when a crime is committed…well, I know criminals aint that bright but they’re not too dumb either and are like most of us and want an easy life so tend to pick the home without a burglar alarm, the car without a steering lock, the lone or young person, or use overwhelming force, or check to see if a cop is coming before launching their attack….they don’t want to exert themselves for their ill gotten gains.

Regular and random foot patrols and a greater use of intelligence models should help in that regard and I can’t say how well Bermuda does in that regard.

  7. percival says:

@soul and fergie….kindly remember thatbermuda is not newyork….thousands of sq miles and they have tonnes of outside resources vs bda and ourlitte 21 sq miles….the only way to deal with this issue is to meet it head on and cut itshead off…harsh strict punishments for persons who commit firearm offences….public beating..this will only work if the public is for it…to make a long story short, in order to fix the problem u have to admit that you have a problem and be willing to “do whatever it takes” to fix your problem.

    • Renaissance Man says:

Manhattan Island (basically what New York is) is 22.96 sq. miles. Virtually identical to Bermuda, just with 1.7 million residents.

Public beatings aren’t going to fix the problem either.

Improvements to CCTV would be the most effective.

      • ok says:

How will CCTV be most effective? The only thing CCTV will do is possibly catch the crime happening. It wont prevent the crime and thats if we are lucky enough to have the camera facing the right way.

  8. Jt says:

The police are scared of getting shot themselves. That is why all of this goes on and we still do not see more police presence.

    • ok says:

JT you are an idiot! Remember I told you that! You think Police are robots? Ofcourse they are scared of getting shot and anyone who said they werent scared is LYING!!! The chances of them getting shot are alot higher than you seeing as they respond to incidents as all you do is complain that they arent doing anything. You expect police to be everywhere at the same time. They go to Court St. a shooting happens up 42nd, they go 42nd a shooting happens up White Hill. The shooters know when they are going to shoot, not the Police. They all have cellphones its really easy to send a text and say “the police are gone, come shoot them now” Use your brain. If we had a policeman on every corner then you would complain there are too many police. Yes this incident is unfortunate but crime will always happen no matter what you do and no matter how many police you throw at the problem. People on here have the nerve to even mention NYC?? NYC and its surrounding burrows have some of the most heinous crimes imaginable. Yeah we have problems but its not a police problem alone. Its a community problem. Instead of telling the police you didnt see anything or just walk on by in fear of retaliation actually give information, give a statement, give evidence in court and maybe just maybe we may start to fix the problem. I get so tired of people like YOU Jt who want to blame the police for the issues of a community. You blame someone Blame the school system and UBP for failing our kids. Blame Sheila Cooper who says its wrong to cut ya kids butt when they need it. Blame the high cost of living causing the breakdown of the family unit because everyone is out working to pay the rent, leaving the kids to bring up themselves. Blame todays Goverment who refuse to take this issue serious enough to look at things like our education system and what it is doing to our children. Zone schooling is what is creating the gang culture in Bermuda. You take a child from Somerset, He goes to Nursery in Somerset, Primary School in Somerset, Middle School in Somerset then you say now that you only know Somerset go and get to know others up at the mega schools and get along.. Thats wrong!!!! When I went to school you had people from St Geo going Sandys and people from Dockyard going NorthLands you met others and got along with everyone. Police have things they could improve on but Jt that is not why all this is going on.

  9. blackwhitestupid says:

I won’t mind a tax increase to keep these mindless idiots behind bars full term. what kind of parents did they have. should lock their *(@ up too

  10. Interesting says:

Why don’t the police just get out of their cars and do walking patrols like they did years ago.

    • ok says:

Why dont you people wake up and come into the 21st Century. This is not Bermuda years ago things have changed and NEVER coming back. Get the through your head. Years ago you didnt have drive by shootings and assassinations on Good Friday either but UNFORTUNATLEY this is the Bermuda and World we are leaving in EVERY country is going through and increase of violent crime. The days of Jolly ol Constable walking through the streets with his whistle and measuring tape to see if a girls skirt was too short are GONE!! The sooner you realize the the better off you’ll be. How they gonna attend the shooting incident? Run??? Because if you think all these shooting and violence would just stop if they got rid of every car tomorrow and just put people out to walk, then you are really living in a fantasy world. Ill give you a little idea of the new Bermuda. I over heard these little boys on the bus the other day, they had to be no older than 12-14. They were talking about how this little girl gives bad oral sex. and desrcibing the ins and out of his little experience with the other boys and the other boys were describing their experiences with the same little girl. Now yes they could be lying but the fact that they talk about this so openly not worrying who hear and not caring. This is the new Bermuda. When I was coming up I wouldnt talk like that in fear someone knew my family on the bus.. Further oral sex was faarrr from my mind at 12-14.

  11. Ok, this is the last straw. These punks are really pushing this stuff too far.. That makes no damn sense. We need to also go to a next level as far as sentencing these gun happy little idiots. Hard time for a very, very, very long time. So what if its your little son or daughter… If not whats gonna happen next is a whole other level. These wanna be little animals so called thugs are going to start being bored and try really brazen stuff… If we do not give them 45 – 75 years and for murdering and minimum 20 just to carry a gun, then we aren’t serious about slowing shi… down… Cause the 6 months to 3 years is OK with them. all They’ll do is a 3 rd.. Please google ( TREY 9 BLOODS GO TO JAIL IN ATLANTA) This happened 2 years ago and thank God they are put down for LIFE… Sentencing was this Friday and I have followed this since day 1… Bermuda, wake up. Or this is an article we are heading to.. Thanks for your time… Blessings and peace… No offence, just real

  12. gods coming says:

god is coming he will fix all the trouble in the world

  13. Veebyes says:

Just how stupid do you have to be to be a criminal in Bermuda? The idiot robs somebody of a cellphone in broad daylight a minutes walk from the cellphone providers office where the service can be immediatley turned off.

I kind of like the idea of ‘bait babes’ being used to lure these thugs. No need for police involment. The Loyal Hill homeowners association volunteers can deal with apprehension & penalty all in a few minutes with no paperwork do deal with.

Muggings, cycle theft etc.etc. would drop to zero in no time.

    • joe says:

Agreed one hundred percent. Get a gang of concerned citizens a la Loyal Hill (I do mean vigilantism)See, what scares a punk more is people reacting and fighting back. A little humiliation getting the their azzes busted is just what the doctor ordered.

  14. Call as it is says:

god is coming he will fix all the trouble in the world

typical Bermudian answer/reply to nearly everything..

    • KFR says:

Your comment was pointless and I take offense to it. You don’t even know if that person is Bermudian…smh

But more importantly I’m sorry the young lady had to go through this. It seems that something really terrible has to happen for drastic measures to take place. Hopefully it won’t come to that.

    • Peace and Love says:

Are you offended by that statement? According to the Bible if you follow it and are an avid reader..these are the signs that the end of time is near.so whether you see it as a “typical Bermudian answer/reply to nearly everything” it is very true…

    • Save yourselves says:

“Call as it is” makes a good point. I have heard this said so many times in Bermuda, and yes I am Bermudian. God is not going to fix this. There is no divine intervention coming. If the criminals are not God fearing, how exactly is God going to help the next 15 yr old that gets held up? We need to start taking responsibility for our people and our island, and stop waiting for some almighty being to clean up our mess.

      • observer says:

        WORD.

      • ok says:

I totally agree. Count how many churches are on in town all around the areas of these shootings and violence. Its amazing. St Monicas has about 6 surrounding that whole area

  15. fergie says:

Glad some of you agreed about decoys. The police should borrow police officers from other jurisdictions old and young and put them on the streets in plainclothes. Walk down front street or Cedar avenue or any other street and some thug will be tempted.

  16. joe says:

Tell you what, if I was in any governmental position in Bermuda I would ban the sales of hooded sweat shirts for quite a while. Every crime, it seems that the perp was wearing a hoodie. Of course, this is for the sole intention of masking identification.
Bermuda HAS to get agrip before it does become South Africa, or Mattapan, Dorchester, or even New Bedford here in Massachusetts.

    • ok says:

ok so you take the hoods away and that solves the problem?? Get real!! so then when they start using T-shirt to cover their faces we gonna ban that too? That makes no sense. Further more 95% of people who wear hoods to keep their heads warm and other reasons have to suffer for the 5% or less that may use a hood to commit a crime?? lol ok there buddy.

      • joe says:

Ok, when a person walks up to you lifting up his t-shirt you know that person is up to NO goo, you can protect yourself or get ready to defend yourself. When punk is coming towards you with a hoodie you are distracted and get caught off guard. You have to get them in the sunlight. I am not saying this is going to stop it in its tracks but it may give them pause to maybe regroup. Put them in defense.

        • insiDe man says:

Bike helmets with a tinted or reflective visor. There are oh so many ways.

    • Jays says:

Just as an FYI – guns are banned too. Doesn’t stop them.

  17. Dyslexic Praying to Dog says:

Praying to God to fix our problems = doing nothing.

  18. Call as it is says:

you can pray as much as you like,
read whatever old books you want,
it is NOT going to fix your problems.
Get your head out of the sand and wise up

  19. enough says:

When is enough going to be enough, this has been going on for a long time now it has hit a peak that is not stopping. It all comes down to drugs. In the 90,s it was called the war on drugs ,so what do we call whats going on now.In the take down of Escobar many forces came together to stop him US armed forces combined with the colombia armed forces at one point you had over 700 armed forces marching through neighborhoods looking for him.Our new govenment wants to stop this violence then they need to get serious,in the Royal Gazettes page on saturday it says “Tackling Gangs will involve US assistance”
Bda needs more than assistance ,we need hundreds of armed troops going through neighborhoods and breaking down a few of these guys, and I am not over exagerating here,it should be stopped once and for all.
Guarantee you would see some peace on the streets after that.People are talking about quick fixes but not the overall shutdown of violence and drugs, bermuda is a small enough place and has enough money for thhis to get done, and if your not willing to do this, i dont, and many others will not take anything serious when you keep talking and do nothing..
There is a documentary on the history channel about escobar and how they let him continue what he was doing for too long after a while he though he was invincible.
Meaning if you dont think this will evolve even further then ur dead wrong.

    • drugs for all! says:

How about we consider legalizing/decriminalizing soft drugs?! We have had this “war” on drugs for some time now and hasn’t done anything but cost tax payers more $ in the end…worldwide!!! You take out the illegal/danger cost of the drug and you have an open market where cost will be reduced; therefore, leading to less violence due to someone trying to pay for a fix…just a thought???

      • insiDe man says:

There are so many harmful drugs that we can buy without a prescription that can do far more damage than these soft illegal drugs. Alcohol is legal and MJ is not.

Drug are our friends. They aren’t going anywhere.

      • NO legalizing and decriminalizing of drugs! No such thing as a soft drug! are you kidding me.I would rather see people stand up and fight,Why cant govenment fight for the lifestyle we should have, why give up and legalize. To make it legal seems like a lazy excuse ,it seems like the easy way out, instead of standing up to people you say hey lets just give up and let them sell whatever they want,,,sorry not good enough!

  20. Peace and Love says:

@ “Call as it is” and “Dyslexic Praying to Dog” when you make a mockery out of God and Religion that’s a whole next level..WOW! is all I can say..have a blessed evening….

    • Call as it is says:

Simply telling you that you can believe whatever you like..
      pray to who you like..

where you get your jollies from typing that we are making a mockery???

FACT:it’s NOT going to do a thing towards fixing the problems
      of violence on this island.

      • KFR says:

LOL how is it a FACT??????

Since you know our solutions why don’t you share some since you know all the FACTS.

        • Call as it is says:

          Yet ANOTHER one!!!

Read what is put and stop twisting words to suit yourself.

          • KFR says:

I asked a question, what words am I TWISTING????? You made a statement. I asked a question.

            LOL……smh

      • Peace and Love says:

Well to each it’s own..Yet you would be offended if I call you an Athiest!!! If that’s what you believe (prayer won’t work) than so be it!!!! But you know what I will say a prayer for you this evening and ask God that you see the light..you say prayer won’t work but I don’t see you following up with what will work! And just as your getting your “jollies” by saying that prayer won’t work than I guess I will get my “jollies” by saying that I am a firm believer that prayer does work!!!!…Remember God loves you and I do too!! Again I say have a blessed evening!

        • Call as it is says:

I would NOT be offended by what you call me…Athiest or anything else.

If I was to put down what would work,I feel however that you would certainly be offended.

          (again,read what is put!!)

          • Peace and Love says:

I did read it Sunshine and you have stated more than once that prayer would not work…maybe you should read what you wrote again because I am responding to the “prayer” will not work portion of your text…If your not a believer so be it..I have “broad shoulders” and in my line of work I deal with people saying “random” things on an almost daily basis…At the end of the day the young person in question is safe and is willing to talk to the Police so with the Lords guidance maybe this is a case that the Police will be able to solve….Peace and Love….

  21. terry says:

You got it right “Drugs for all”. Damn…spot on….That’s the attitude. I love soft drugs. Hard drugs? No problem……just add a little water, a few “Q-Tips”…..poke here poke there…….Give me your email and we can correspond.

    Yes eye……we could make millions….ooops…..

    • drugs for all! says:

LOL…won’t publish my email publicly…but I am definitely up for making millions…sign me up!!!

  22. Tina says:

God will take care of them, they will be judged. This is not the first time this has happened in that area and during the day with traffic and others and “nobody see nothing” or comes to anyones rescue. People are afraid because these guys carry weapons. We need more Loyal Hill style justice!!!!!!!!!!!!

    • Call as it is says:

No,it will be the Judges and Police *IF and WHEN* they catch these fools

  23. AAAAA says:

Justice System Plays a Role in how Bermy is Becoming !!
Go Court You either Get off
Or Get a Prison Sentence for approx 10 yrs for Gun Posession,
Then you go on parole and only be in jail for 3 years!! dis isn’t Punishment!!
WAKE UP ! and MAKE EM DO TIME !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
    Signing Out!!
    Bless UP !

  24. Bayleaf says:

Whatever happened to the CCTV system ? If these Punks knew that they would be on tv perhaps they would think twice!!If you can spend an extra 10m on TCD what price to allow a young girl to be able to walk around BDA. safely?? ( on 2nd thoughts these thugs would probably like to be filmed, bragging rights and all that – you know another feather in the hoody !) BDA. is rapidly becoming a very sad Island home.

  25. Darrel says:

Don’t rely on the useless idiots who call themselves police in Bermuda, example, motorbike runs into the back of my car causing damage then speeds off. Police are called, I give them the license no. of the bike, they say they most likely won’t be able to find who did it???
To top it off they wrote the wrong street on the accident report.
And this was a simple hit and run with the license number provided, what hope have we got?

    • insiDe man says:

The police officers themselves are not the problem. The problem is the way that they are being run. At the end of the day, this all ties into government.

    • Ouch says:

      D,
when was the hit n run n where was it?
