CAC Medal Winners Receive Cheques

Today [Dec 22] the Minister for Youth, Families, Sports and Community Development Glenn Blakeney along with the Director of the Department of Youth and Sport Norbert Simons, presented cheques totaling $7,000 to five athletes for their medal winning performances at the 2010 Central American and Caribbean [CAC] Games.

The Programme is intended to provide cash inducements to Bermuda’s elite athletes who achieve the required standards to compete in the Olympic Games, Pan American Games, Commonwealth Games and Central American and Caribbean Games and who perform at their level best in any of these competitions such that a medal performance is achieved.

On July 26 of this year Tyrone Smith won the gold medal in the Men’s Long Jump, for his feat Mr Smith a cheque for $2,500. Mr Smith’s gold medal win is notable in that it is the second ever gold medal for Bermuda in the history of the CAC Games, and he also set a new Bermuda record with a leap of 8.03m. Flora Duffy won a silver medal the Women’s Olympic Distance Triathlon on July 24th, and was presented with a check for $1,500.

Ross Roberts collected $1,000.00 for his bronze medal winning performance in the Men’s 50m Rifle Prone Shooting competition on July 20th.

Neil de ste Croix received on behalf of Tyler Butterfield who received $1,000.00 for his bronze medal win in the Men’s Olympic Distance Triathlon held on July 24th.

Not pictured is Damien Matthews, who won a Bronze Medal in Men’s Singles Bowling and received $1,000.
