Jon Beard, Bermuda’s chef de mission, is confident the island’s team will produce strong performances at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic.

The Bermuda Olympic Association has named a 104-member delegation, including 78 athletes, the largest team the island has sent to a multi-sport event.

Bermuda will compete in 17 sports at the Games, which mark the 25th edition of the event and the centenary of its founding in 1926.

Several of the Bermuda team will also compete at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, which overlap with the CAC Games.

“We have some big numbers coming in [to Santo Domingo], with athletes coming and going as some are competing in Glasgow,” Beard told Bernews.

“It’s a good level of sport. There will definitely be opportunities for our athletes to medal.”

Beard, who previously served as the chef de mission, said the Games had benefited from extensive investment in venues and infrastructure ahead of the centenary event.

“The facilities there are fantastic,” he added. “It’s the 100th anniversary of the Games, so Santo Domingo want to make a real show of it.

“They have rebuilt, renovated or upgraded many of the venues.

“There are sports parks, which means it will be a bit easier for our athletes to watch and support each other. Many of the competition venues are close to each other.

“It’s great to see a Bermuda team featuring in so many sports.”

The Games run from July 24 to August 8.
