A Police spokesman said: “It appears that both vehicles were traveling along North Shore Road when they collided at the junction. Why can’t they pass laws giving outright jail time to these offenders. Two weeks detention for first time caught should scare the wits of driving under the influence a second time. Put in a hefty fine too!

  2. Pondering says:

We have a problem on this island. Simply put, we drink too much. Have you ever walked along our railroad tracks? The number of empty beer/ liquor bottles is staggering. The tracks look nasty and filthy. The only conclusion you can draw is that people are driving and throwing empties out of the car. (And to think we also encourage tourists to walk those nasty tracks). Because there are so few road checkpoints coupled with penalties applied in an inconsistent manner, drinkers will continue to roll the dice and drive.

  3. Common Sense says:

Whenever the Police have any sort of “crack down” of speeding, impaired driving or traffic offences in the past the public has been incensed, the politicians have complained, and the Police have backed off. But the truth is that far more people of killed and seriously injured in traffic accidents than as a result of murders and other violent crime. The chances of being the innocent victim of a serious traffic accident (too often caused by drunk drivers or high speeders) are far higher than being shot or attacked on the street.

If our politicians gave their unqualified support for the Police to strictly enforce the traffic law Bermuda would be a much safer place – and our car and bike insurance rates would start dropping.

    • Copy Cat says:

Yeah right, start the enforcement right outside the police recreation club, where the cops go to drink and then drive home afterward… Who stops them (the cops) from drink driving…
This is what I don’t understand. Why does the police, fire service, prison service and bus drivers all have bars? Yet we admit there’s a growing problem with drinking and driving…

      • ok says:

What is your point??? So these places have bars! Bars are not the problem its the irresponsible road users who decide to drive after they drink. Last time I checked Ive never heard of a Prison, fire or police officer get in a serious accident due to accessive drinking. So let me guess thats because police cover up all the accidents concerning these services right?? Everyone at one time or another has driven with more than the legal limit, considering what the limit is. The fact is too many people going out knowing they are going to get smashed and still drive. I just think you are another person so quick to jump on the bash police bandwagon which is so huge on this site!!!

ok stated and I quote “Everyone at one time or another has driven with more than the legal limit,”enquote.
Wow I did’nt know that I as a non drinker had driven over the limit at one time or another. Bermuda must really have a major DUI problem when the thousands of us ‘non drinkers/never had a drink’ drivers are put in his ‘everyone’ category.
Time for me to join AA…

  4. Common Sense says:

Let me get Copy Cat’s message straight. We should ignore drunk driving, speeding and other dangerous driving because there’s a bar at the Police Recreation Club. We should continue to allow innocent people to be killed and injured on our roads because the police, fire service, prison service and bus drivers all have bars, and nobody would stop them!

I have one slight correction to make to the comments of “Ok says”, he says that he’s never heard of a police officer getting involved in a serious accident due to excessive drinking, but in fact there was a police officer who got drunk at the police club quite a few years ago and was involved in an accident not too far from Prospect where the innocent party was injured. Far from being allowed to get away with it the police officer was arrested for drunk driving and dangerous driving (by one of his own friends) and was prosecuted and convicted on both charges, and then fired from the Police. I do not want to name the officer publicly, but I would be happy to provide his details to the editor of Bernews so that she can check out the story independently and verify whether what I have written is true.

Believe it or not, the vast majority of police officers are law abiding citizens who have respect for others. To suggest that we do nothing about a major social problem because of some misguided perception is ridiculous. I hope that “Copy Cat” is finally beginning to understand …. This is a serious problem and needs to be addressed because we ALL suffer.
