Barbara Tannock Charged With Theft

March 28, 2011

Barbara Tannock was charged in Magistrates Court today [Mar.28], with stealing approximately $100,000. Ms Tannock faced multiple counts of theft and money laundering.

Tannock Magistrates Court Bermuda March 28th 2011-1

Since the charges were indictable, she was not required to enter a plea. Magistrate Archie Warner read out the charges which involved stealing amounts varying from $1,000 to $21,000 and totalling approximately $100,000. There were approximately a dozen counts of stealing and of attempting to conceal her actions. All the activity was alleged to have taken place over a seven month period.

The earliest charges stemmed from stealing $13,000 in July 2009 and the latest dates were 25th January 2010. Ms Tannock is believed to have been employed by Capital G bank during this seven month period. All the charges relate to activity in one account said to be in the name of Mr/Mrs A and M Place.

Represented by Lawyer Larry Mussenden, Ms Tannock was granted bail of $10,000 with one Surety. The Prosecutor asked that travel restrictions be imposed as part of the bail conditions; but Mr Mussenden objected. The Magistrate ruled that further restrictions were un-necessary and that the normal requirement for Ms Tannock to seek permission to travel should suffice.

Ms Tannock was separately charged with speeding at 58kph on 14 March 2011. To this she pleaded guilty and was fined $215.

  1. OMG says:

This is soooo sad on so many levels, these people are put in a place of trust and then because of the times we are living in, try and live way above their means….

    sad…..sad….sad

    • crazy says:

What’s crazy is that she was already making a huge salary working in a job that most Bermudians would love to hold – but allegedly used that opportunity to abuse her high-power position. Just pure greed and arrogance

  2. Sad says:

I do hope that this isn’t true. Ms Tannock is a bright lady who I personnally held in high regard. It is sad to think that the world we live in causes good people to do bad things. Capitalism at its worst.

    • D. Everett says:

MORE LIKE GREED, If you can’t afford to live up to the Jones then live up to what the Tannocks can afford. I’m sorry we are all feeling the crunch but not everyone is going out and stealing.

  3. TJ says:

I really looked up to Ms. Tannock. She was an establised, young black woman who held the CFA designation, which is a difficult designation to obtain. It’s a shame to see all of her accomplishements go down the drain because of this. *shaking head*

  4. Itcouldhappen says:

Here we all go again, finding a person guilty before hearing all the facts. Let this happen to your close friend or family member and see how judgemental you are.

    • OMG says:

I’m not saying she is guilty I pray that she is not, but usually if the case is bought before the court, there is enough evidences to uphold the charges. From the comments here, she was a well like and respected person. Sad situation.

      • Just Yell says:

I don’t think so OMG! I’ve been to court before charged with B & E, and after proving my innocence the case was thrown out on it head. And the prosecutor gave me congratulates me for having my ducks lined up in a row… So there is a saying innocent until proven guilty…

    • Just Yell says:

I am with you Itcouldhappen… How many of us was taught not to throw stones?

  5. Totally Disgusted says:

Sad is not the word, such a bright young woman caught up in this foolishness however we never know what a person is going through that pushed her to this point.

  6. Truth is killin' me... says:

Thought she was smart enuff to outsmart the system no matter what qualifications she has and “if” she is found guilty then she is a thief/criminal and should spend time for being one!

  7. Charge um says:

Let’s c how this one pans out. If i can recall the girl Justine got charge and was taken court for $30,000.00 & given a jail sentence…….mmmmmmm just wondering???

  8. andre says:

    Innocent till proven guilty!

  9. Paw Paw says:

Unfortunately, we may see a lot more of these types of cases before the courts. It’s called greed…plain and simple.
Just stop getting caught up, we all want nice things, but if you are not born with a silver spoon in your mouth and not married to Donald Trump or a celebrity, stop trying to live the life trying to impress people who really don’t matter.
There’s no excuse for anyone to steal anyone’s hard earned money, whether it’s 100K or 5K.
There are too many enablers on this island..if you do the crime, you do the time.
    How embarrassing.

  10. wow says:

    wow

  11. gm says:

this girl reminds me of the couple that had the investment company opposite music box, oh what it takes to live like the jones, :) :):)

    • Just Yell says:

Who wants to live like the Jones’s? The grass maybe greener but its so much harder to cut… :-( )

    • Dark Crystal says:

Yeah. That would be David and Antoinette Bolden, Emerald Financial Group and other subsiduaries. Don’t think their case has finished yet.

  12. gm says:

    SHAME, SHAME,SHAME,SHAME,SHAME,

  13. I dont feel sorry! says:

I dont care what designation she has acquire, if convicted that should be stripped immediately once the CFA Board finds out. And yeah lets not forget that Justine got 2 years, I expect Ms. Tannock to get about 4-5 years (not months) if convicted. Lastly, greed is all this is.

    • gm says:

5 years,PLEASE !!!, because she maybe convicted on stealing with a pen, HOW MUCH TIME WOULD SHE GET IF SHE WOULD BE CONVICTED OF STEALING WITH A GUN??? HELLO!!!!

  14. Terry says:

Narrow minded just like the Jones’s. The price of lettuce is up. Lettuce pray…Our Father that are in Sen/Government hallowed be thy name.

For those words, the Lord will not take me. But I shall be taken down by…..

    • Just Yell says:

It takes a lot more then the Jones’s to be that narrow minded…

  16. oh my says:

    wow indeed

  17. Makes sense! says:

Greed one of the seven deadly sins

  18. On the outside looking in says:

In my book sin is sin and although the flesh fails, the court system (most of the time) punishes the crime. Dragging the defendant thru to mud does not sentence the crime.

  19. Dark Crystal says:

How is she related to Raymond Tannock that we see in the photo, 1st from left?

  20. ????Surprise, Surprise says:

Karma is indeed a B*t*h!! Hope you’re innocent but I doubt it!
Oh, and that’s her daddy on the left. Very supportive family – this is really a shame. Nobody is perfect no matter how hard they try – Hope I never shame my family like this. But I tend to think before I leap. Good luck Ms. Tannock

  21. The mon says:

We have to wait and see how this turn out first but lost of business in Bermuda have gone under because of shady CFA fixing their pocket and not the books.

  22. TT says:

its so unfortunate that this happen. None of us know the personal circumstances of why this happened, as we dont in Davids & Antoinettes cases. Just pray for them if they did it they will be punished for their mistakes and will learn from it, and if they didnt their names will be exonerated and reputation will be restored (hard in this little Island). Remember we all are not perfect but all fall short of the glory of God. As long as we can learn from our mistakes, and grow from them and help others, this is how we should be judged. Hopefully, Barbara, Antoinette & David and Cyril & Dulcina Burrows will be given the opportunity, wether they are guilty or innocent to right their wrongs, and to give back to the community to restore their names.

    • Jim Garlic says:

Are You a Pastor or a Lawyer???? They both tend to represent the gathering of the MONEY.Just askin as you seem to know every name like a rollcall..

      • HADTOLAUGH says:

LMARO AT JIM GARLIC’S COMMENT…THAT WAS FUNNY…PASTOR OR LAWYER AND ROLLCALL…

  23. tannock says:

who speaks for the family (old couple) who lost just under 100k! certainly they are the real victims

  24. TI says:

It’s unfortunate that most of us don’t have a strong enough conscience when it comes to greed or doing sumthin stupid. There’s always consequences for our actions, what happens in the dark shows up in the light…it will always come back and bite you in the a**. Some bermudians are always “struggling” to outdue the next person. Our mentality is off. (If she did do it, I hope she was stealing to pay off an outrageous overseas medical bill or sumthin). As for the designation, more money, more problems.

You ppl condoning and wishing this lady gets a “2nd chance” are all crazy! Its ok 4 her 2 b a nice person 2 u & be charged with stealing thousands of dollars from some unsuspecting couple right? Something must have pushed this lovely lady to do such a thing if she did it. But as soon as one of our nice guys are faced in a situation where its the polices word against theirs, they’re carrying some weed or know some1 from parkside they’re 2 b locked up with the key never 2 b found no questions asked no evidence needed??? Are we wishing & hoping the youth involved in shootings & other gang related crimes are indeed innocent? Are we praying for their 2nd chance? No! So y her? & now what are you going to say of her parents & upbringing??? If anything she’s worse because she has no reason or pressure from any1 else 2 do such things if she did them. Imagine what she would be going up for if she had possession of this magical gun commiting the shootings police can’t find. Hold onto your bank accounts seniors!!! You do the crime you do the time simple nice person or not. A law abiding citizen she is not if she did this…which is why she is where she is. Lock her the eff up with all the dummies importing & aiding hang activity. No one sin is better than the other. Lock her the eff up!!!
