BIU President Updates On Negotiations

June 21, 2011

BIU President Chris Furbert held a press conference today [June 21] to report on the current state of negotiations between the BIU and the Bermuda Government.

Mr Furbert, who has just returned from a trip abroad, said he was aware of the letter sent to the letter sent to the Transport Minister containing a 21 day notice of industrial action.

The notice runs out this coming Friday [June 24], and Mr Furbert said they “will have another meeting with the membership on the 23rd and decide what action to take, if any at all.”

When asked does the term “industrial action” equate to a “strike”, Mr Furbert said no, and said it could mean work to rule, ban of overtime, or a number of other things. Mr Furbert said “whatever action will be decided by the membership” if they decide to take action.

The audio of Mr Furbert’s statement, and the Q&A, is below:

Mr Furbert said he had a meeting today with Ministry officials to discuss a number of issues, including the scheduling, wheelchair accessibility, days in lieu, relief of cashiers and more.

He went on to say that “Based on how close we are the matter does not need to go before arbitration. We are practically close to 95% done.”

Did i miss something? http://bernews.com/2011/05/webcast-minister-biu-president-on-bus-schedule/ . Now this joker says he changed his mind.

When will this end? Chris Furbert keep your word and end this saga and get on with it.

    • PEPPER says:

Is chris related to Lavern ?

      • The 411 says:

        Relevance?

      • Maddog says:

        If he is so what.

      • Maddog says:

If he is so what grow up.

      • Riley B King says:

It’s a fair question. In this case the BIU is negotiating against the Govt, and Laverne is a member of the Govt. If there is a conflict of interest because they are related, they should disclose it.

Or, they will have to live with (more) allegations of back-door deals done in private to benefit a few undisclosed people.

Who is in charge, the Minister or the PS? If both parties agreed to arbitration, they should proceed with it. Come on Minister Lister, earn your pay!!!

  3. Citizen Banned (Original) says:

So they agreed to arbitration then changed their minds? Can you do that? They thinking they can still put the squeeze on Gover(n)ment huh? Who the eff is in charge here?

Lister, like the guy said above: Earn your effing pay – fire all of them. Rehire the ones who re-apply and pass the drug test.
