‘Dunkley’s Statement No Reflection Of Facts’

June 15, 2011

Wayne Perinchief May 20 2011-1-2Commenting on the recent statements made by Senator Michael Dunkley Minister of National Security Wayne Perinchief said, “Mr. Dunkley’s statement bears no reflection of the facts. Targeted and sensible police deployment has yielded significant results and the people of Bermuda have noticed it and applauded it.”

Senator Dunkley, the Shadow Minister for National Security, criticized Government’s progress on fighting crime saying, “We have had a Government that, in effect, is all talk no action, and action is what we need.”

The Senator also said, “Bermuda will not make meaningful progress against the violence without treating the underlying situation that fosters gang-culture and the violence that comes with it. This is a long-term undertaking that will require discipline, commitment and leadership – three qualities the Government has not yet shown.”

Minister Perinchief said, “In each and every statement on crime the Government has clearly set out initiatives that have been implemented and the public discussion indicates that unlike Senator Dunkley, the people understand what’s on the table and what’s at stake.”

“Mr. Dunkley deliberately ignores the success of the police and the criminal justice system in bringing offenders to justice,” continued Minister Perinchief.

“Facts speak for themselves and the facts are that we are working every day to provide safer communities and to build on the hard work of the men and women of the Bermuda Police Service and many other agencies engaged in this fight against crime. “

  2. sandgrownan says:

I like Phil, I do, but he should pause for thought.

Dunkley didn’t criticize the BPS, he criticized gover(n)ment. Phil should address that, not what he thinks Dunkley said.

    • SMH says:

Maybe you should get his first name right. The Minister is Wayne Perinchief, not Phil.

      • Organic Bermudian says:

LOL!! Think you have SAND in your mouth there!

      • sandgrownan says:

        Touche – my bad..oops!

    • Moooo says:

Aww you like Phil so much! What about Wayne? You like him too?

      • sandgrownan says:

        Alright alright….it was a simple typo….jesus h…

  3. Citizen Banned (Original) says:

Dunkley’s job is to criticise Gover(n)ment where ever possible. Why is anyone surprised when he does this?

    • My two cents says:

I made a comment like this a couple of years ago. You are so right. What government in other parts of the world spend this much time whining about what the opposition says about them? It’s politics people. I find it alarming and funny at how emotional our politicians are. I hope they realize how silly they(politicians) sound whining all the time(you know who you are) about things that are known given standards in every other democracy around the world. How about you spend less time trying to defend yourself and start doing what we are paying you to do. Solve the countries problems! I mean how bad does it look when politicians are complaining about people saying/singing things that fall under the freedom of speech? It looks really bad and makes you look guilty of something.

  4. huh says:

I’m sure Phil would address that if that was actually him. It’s WAYNE Perinchief doll….

  5. Credit says:

Time to give credit where it is due…

Crime is DOWN for all crimes in the past year.
    Anti Social Crimes have decreased.
    Property Crimes have decreased.
    Traffic Collisions have decreased.
    Drug enforcement activity has increased.

Surveys show a greater confidence in the Police force.

It is unfortunate that Senator Dunkley has no confidence in his own Bermuda Police Service. He masks his statements and says that they are against government, but really the only people they can really fall on are the Police Service.

    • sandgrownan says:

He wasn’t criticizing the BPS…..that’s the point

    • C. Helmsley says:

These things would all be nice if they were true…if you’re going to make arbitrary claims like this, the least you can do is ATTEMPT to source them.

    • JMR says:

Are you kidding me??? Crime is down? anti social behavior is down? People are confident in the Police Service? You must be living on a different Rock!

The fact is that we have anti-social behavior increasing at an alarming rate – hooligans roaming the streets of Hamilton at will, intimidating visitors and locals alike, vagrants hanging out in Public parks, parking lots, Public buildings and the Ferry terminal – drinking, swearing and generally behaving badly. Our roads are like the wild west, with everyone from school kids to white collar workers to Bus drivers driving like maniacs, and the one common theme is a nearly complete lack of Police presence to deal with this dilemma.

It may not be the fault of the rank and file of the BPS, but there is certainly a desperate need for new leadership at the commissioner, Government and Government House level.

    • crazytalk says:

“Credit”, where do you get this complete nonsense from? Is it from the same survey that says the economy is booming, tourism is in a Platinum period, we are all feeling safer these days, everybody is happy with the economic performance of the government, all politicians are honest people?

Can’t you read? Perinchief says nothing in this fluff piece. The fact is, violent crime is an enourmous problem, and it wasn’t anything like this 5 years ago. SOMETHING must be wrong.

    • Geza Wolf says:

Do you have proof of any of that?

    • Tired of nonsense says:

It amazes that the recent rise in violent crime is placed solely on the feet of the Governor…

But when there is some positive news regarding the reduction in crime it is solely down to the PLP’s initatives and hard work…

Make up your minds as to who has responsibility over the BPS…

  6. Credit says:

no one has denied that there is more work to be done, but to negate the work that has been done to this point is irresponsible, especially for someone in Senator Dunkley’s position. His statements are disingenuous at best.

    • IgnoranceisBliss says:

Citizen Banned – Is correct “Credit”…Dunkley is Opposition he is obliged to criticize government, unfortunately supporters of PLP see this as a personal attack rather than constructive criticism and suggest his words are completely useless when in fact the only useless thing is our current government party…Bermuda wants a change let’s start with the people who run it.

    • Geza Wolf says:

You work for the goverMENT.. where is your proof to validate your earlier claims?

      • LOL (original) says:

Where you the guy who put the letters on the van reported about earlier?

        LOL

  7. Terry says:

    Lunch time guys……….jingus…..

  8. LOL (original) says:

Lets be honest does it even matter what an opposition MP let a lone a rich white one has to say? Who would be listening?

    LOL

    • no proof says:

sad but so true! The guy has valid points but he’ll never get anywhere in government simply because he isnt in already and hes white so getting in would be impossible

      • Tired of nonsense says:

And that’s the way it should be…

        If it’s white it can’t be right…

        • no proof says:

Its people like you who make Bermuda as crappy as it is.

    • Notorious says:

You’re white yourself, the same could be said about you.

      • LOL (original) says:

na I’m poor and not competing with the almighty PLP Nicole makes a big difference.

        LOL

        • Notorious says:

Still white so….won’t make a difference to black folk who only vote because the PLP are black.

  9. Andreas K. says:

Haha Wayne Perinchief has clearly been watching a lot of Fox News…his derailment tactics are on full display here!

Hilariously meaningless and misleading statements such as:

    “the public discussion indicates ______”
“Facts speak for themselves, and the facts are _____”

are reminiscent of the idiotic anti-intellectualism currently infecting the United States in the form of the “Tea Partiers”. Similarly, even though there is absolutely no quantitative evidence to support his claims, Perinchief knows that all you need to be taken seriously in the Bermuda’s political climate is to act childishly devensive and spew divisive populist rhetoric.

Perinchief knows that keeping us uninformed is the only way that the pathetic Government he represents can retain power, and by God, its working.

“Crime is down 12,000%! Employment is up 675%! These are facts, people! Factsfactsfactsfactsfacts! Just SAYING something while wearing a tie makes it true! I’m serious!”

  10. Terry says:

One has to look at the history, facts et al of Mr. Perinchief. Cannot say more as I could libel myself. Do the research. Irony is, your spot on with “Ties”………ties to what……..

  11. Dunkley is ALL TALK! says:

    Tell em’, Minister!

Minister Perinchief, over the course of the two/three months that you have been in charge of National Security, you have done a terrific job, and I applaud you. Dunkley will continue to run his mouth just so that he can stay in the spotlight. Bermuda certainly has a long challenge ahead, but unlike Dunkley, I understand that Minister Perinchief cannot clean up this whole mess in one day. Minister Perinchief has already stated that there are long and short term problems. But Dunkley feeds off of everything negative. I also applaud the BPS, as the criminals are being brought to justice, more and more.

    • sandgrownan says:

What Dunkley was pointing out, was that the BPS are doing a great job DESPITE gover(n)ment. He actually offers respect to Wayne (or is it Phil) but points out that Wayne has to step up.

The recent BPS successes are the result of long operations. But they only deal with the symptoms. Dunkley’s poitn was that gover(n)ment needs to attack the root casue and so far, has failed to do that.

Jesus, as with yesterday’s thread, can any of you actually comprehend that without getting all “oooh whitey milkman is criticising again” ?

PLP cool aid drinkers need to think.

      • Hmmmmm says:

Then Dunkley should’ve left it to whoever the Shadow Minister is for root causes this week. Or is he continuing his campaign for leadership of the OBA by commenting on anything and everything…like he did in the UBP?

        • sandgrownan says:

Jesus, same old tired PLP diversionary tactic….shoot the messenger rather than adress the message.

It’s getting old, no, it’s already old. Play the race card and we’re done here.

          • Hmmmmm says:

Your criticism is sound and deserves answers; mine is a “diversionary tactic”? We’re in the realm of politics so get political. Meet the criticism with more than the fact that you don’t like it. In this case the messenger taints the message and that’s a fact. The sooner the OBA realize that this guy doesn’t help them gain any traction the better off they’ll be. He needs to join the silent drill team of Richards, Gibbons, Jackson and Moniz; they speak when spoken to now.

            • LOL (original) says:

Thank you for admitting what I said above ie rich, white but with most on here white is enough.

              LOL

            • sandgrownan says:

Nice. Shut up until you are spoken to you rich white racist.

Nice one, that’s what you are saying isn’t it?

    • C. Helmsley says:

      @Dunkley is ALL TALK!

Just want to address a few of your claims:

“Minister Perinchief, over the course of the two/three months that you have been in charge of National Security, you have done a terrific job, and I applaud you.”

      - What exactly has HE done besides talk (the same thing you accuse Dunkley, a SHADOW minister, of doing) Do you have any evidence to back up this emptily-congratulatory claim?

“…but unlike Dunkley, I understand that Minister Perinchief cannot clean up this whole mess in one day.”

      - Dunkley never said anything, even in the rhetorical sense, that indicated the mess could be cleaned up in “one day”. You are putting words in his mouth.

“But Dunkley feeds off of everything negative”

      - “Feeding off” is NOT akin to confronting and acknowledging what is a very serious problem, which is what Dunkley is doing (ya know, FIVE murders within the first 6 months of 2011). You’re right, though…crime is scary…we should probably just not talk about it and hope that it goes away so that our politicians can look good when they do public appearances.

“…as the criminals are being brought to justice, more and more.”

      - Again, more groundless baloney…some statistical evidence would be nice.

      • LOL (original) says:

Besides only the Governor can get the BPS in action so I guess we should congratulate him then.

        LOL

    • #ThatIsAll says:

I swear Bermudians have NO CLUE about politics… and how a democratic government works!!!!! It is the SHADOW Minister’s JOB to keep the ruling party on their toes! Dunkley is just doing his job… FURTHER MORE… Perinchief HASN’T done anything since hes been in… besides tell the police to “use to tools and legislature that exists to catch criminals” (which was wise.. don’t know why they werent alreading doing that) and banning tinted visors….

Lets see how many unsolved murders there are….
      Jason Lighbourne
      Shundae Jones
      Shakai Crockwell
      Aquil Richardson (Persons charged)
      Wheels Robinson
      Kumi Hartford (One person Charged)
      Gary Fingas Cann
      Shane Minors (2 People Charged
      Perry Puckerin
      James Laws
      Kimwande Walker
      George Lynch
      Yankee Rawlins (person charged)
      Freddie Maybury
      Jahmiko Leshore
      Colford Furgeson
      David Clarke
      Randy Robinson
      Jason Smith

I’m not saying that I expect it to be done in 3 months.. but this would be a good place to start.

And just to go off the point “Dunkley is all talk!” made about criminals being brought to justice more and more… where did you get that from?? what criminals are being brought to justice more and more… we have had 2 convictions this year (for murders that happened in 2009 and 2010) TWO!!!!!!!!!!! the 15 others will likely remain unsolved!! Dunkley made valid points:

“Against this less than satisfactory background, I welcomed the appointment of new National Security Minister Wayne Perinchief in April and we will try to support his work going forward. But I remain deeply concerned because the Government still has no plan in place to deal with gang-related violence.”……….

And the Bottom line is…. there is STILL no plan.

  12. Takbir Sharrieff says:

The Government and the people of Bermuda are working hard to bring criminals to Justice…..the Crime busters and the Po..Po..are earning their wages…..the right minded people of Bermuda are supporting them and all opposition parties should be supporting them in this fight against crime drugs and violence in Bermuda….100%….I believe that’s the way it should be……….not playing Political one upmanship games.!Politics or Politricks needs to take a back seat to this #1 concern.Safety Security Health And the Economy and Tourism are lined up for attention put your Political ties in your Pockets ….roll up your sleeves….and lets go to work….for sure….Bermuda deserves it.Bermy first……egos later….sorrrrry.!

    • Geza Wolf says:

Youre confused, staying in power is the most important thing to a government.

    • Terry says:

Takbir, with all respect are you not Waynes older brother?

  13. Clafe says:

    AY DUN,

ALL u bies need to just sit back and smoke a FET spliff. Wayne perincheef is my bredren, an I met michael dunkley 1 time at de gym, an he seems real safe. Both of them are straight BREDRENS, and ALL you guyz can do is criticize 1 or de other for bein PLP or UBP (OBA, whateva ioneen know). de violence n crime happnen on dis island is arryones problem, and guyz need to just chill de flep out n stop shootin each otha u know? I mean, guyz could sell de guns to de goverment and promise that they’ll stop bein mug, n that would probly work i think.

My boy Street-Toes used to live a life of violence n crime, but deyn he had a lickle yout, and arrything changed. 1 day he came up to me n said “u know what Clafe, I think that I have 2 change de way I live…babies n bullets don’t go well together”. I was like “yah”, and from dat moment, he started workin 4 government (up Westgate), and arrything was kewl.

More guyz need 2 b like my boy Street-Toes, um just sayin.

    • Logic76 says:

Again in English for those of us who didn’t understand a single word you wrote.

      • Terry says:

Cum nah Lujic 87……Dis his ah bermy site…Jah lvs manno….gatwiff de bredren….feal de luv brudda man…..fet spliff hor be stif,,,,,,,,,

  14. Andreas K. says:

    @Logic76

I think what he is trying to say (and please, Clafe, correct me if I’m wrong), is that ending this ferocious crime wave is as much a matter of personal agency as it is Government intervention. There’s only so much that any Governing body can achieve through social rehabilitation programs & increased police prescence; this is an issue of individual moral integrity.

Clafe’s anecdote regarding his friend Street-Toes is touching and inspirational, and an abject lesson in how overcoming the temptation of criminal enterprise, despite overwhelming difficulty, is not only possible, but the only proactive solution.

    Bravo, Clafe!

  15. Moooo says:

Dunkley will milk any issue to remain politically relevant.

  16. Terry says:

Takbir, are you not Gary Perinchief?

  17. god1st says:

    Is Michael Dunkley’s time up?
