Guilty Plea: Stealing Liquor, Pizza, Spare Ribs

June 16, 2011

After being arrested by Police for failing to attend Court on 1st June 2011, 35-year-old Southampton resident Neko Cann this morning [June 16] pleaded guilty in Magistrates Court to two charges of stealing food from Lindo’s in Warwick.

Mr Cann pleaded guilty to stealing a leg of lamb, spare-ribs, two loaves of bread, and a bottle of Hennessey cognac in February 2011; and with stealing two loaves of bread, pizzas, a six pack of beer and a bottle of Hennessey in March 2011

The Prosecutor told Magistrate Khomisi Tokunbo that Mr Cann was caught on the store’s CCTV system as he placed the items in backpacks before exiting the store. On the first occasion, Mr Cann had been accosted by store staff but had been let go claiming that he was working for ‘Dunkleys’.

In his defence, Mr Cann said that he had been laid off in January, had been forced to move out of the apartment he was renting and had been forced to go back home and live with his mother. Mr Cann said that he also had custody of one of his two sons. He said that he took the food items so that he could “put something in the house.”

Asked by Magistrate Tokunbo why he had taken the Hennessey, Mr Cann admitted that he had taken that for himself.

Mr Cann further explained to the Magistrate that he had not appeared on 1st June because he had been sick on 31st May. Magistrate Tokunbo accepted that excuse but remonstrated with Mr Cann saying that he should not have waited until he was picked up by Police. Instead, he should have come back to Court long before his arrest on 14th June.

Ordering a Social Inquiry Report [SIR], Magistrate Tokunbo asked Mr Cann if there was any reason why he should not be remanded into custody while the SIR was being completed.

Mr Cann said: “Since that incident I’ve been finding work and where I can, I am making money honestly. I have been working part-time…”

Mr Cann was released on $2,000 bail and is due to re-appear for sentencing in August.

You can’t use the excuse that you needed the food to feed your family when you steal liquor as well. Had he also stolen a bag of vegetables I’d have more sympathy for him.

  2. itwasn'tme says:

    Liquor is food. Spiritual food

  3. Taurus says:

  4. Bryan says:

Yeah the Hennessey was a ridiculous item but still overall when someone is caught stealing food I think perhaps he should get a sentence like a days honest work at the store he stole from, cleaning up , moving items in the warehouse etc…supervised of course but lets stop making desperate people more desperate and help them to mitigate their circumstances.

  5. blind young person..... says:

HE NEEDED THE HENNESSEY TO STERILIZE HIS FOOD

  6. Ganja mon says:

No sympathy from you because you feel you’ve never had to steal.

Screw it, if your gonna do something, “All or nothing” right? If he had got away he would;ve regretted not taking the Henny too.

Its too bad he felt he had to resort to this, but some of you people need to get off your high horse and realize this is what Bermuda has come to.

So while your sitting at your desk today reading this, try to understand there are people who want to work but cant get any luck. If you cant comprehend that, piss off !!!

  7. Truth be Told says:

All honesty its had times for people and some resort to desperate measures …Obviously his head had to be heavy to have to steal food and the alcohol was most likely to drink his problem away so to speak.

  8. Uncle Nick says:
