Rifle Club Members Head To Island Games

June 22, 2011

Coral Reef's Rifle & Pistol Club Nelson Simons Bermuda Feb 5th 2011-1-8The shooting team for the Island Games flew out last night [June 21], but not before delays and issues arose with the team members being able to transport their rifles on the flight with them.

Members of the Bermuda Rifle & Pistol Club Association gathered at the airport last night, prepared to travel on British Airways to the Isle of Wight via London.

They needed official exit permits for their rifles, which the rifle club members understood to be sorted, however a last minute issues arose with the permit.

Members of the Bermuda Rifle and Pistol Club Association discussed the issue involving the paperwork with two attending Police Officers, who indicated that without the proper paperwork two or three rifles were not going to be able to travel.

Management and staff of British Airways worked to have the matter sorted out, and after some delay a Bermuda Police Service Inspector arrived and took control of the situation. Following a lengthy discussion, all team members and their rifles were allowed to travel, and the team rushed off to make the flight.

The traveling team consists of Lt. Col. Eugene Raynor, Ross Roberts, Wilbur Lightbourne, Blade Rabain, Walter Trott, Carl Reid, Lloyd Evans and two female competitors Maurisa Smith and Dwaynette Smith.

Nelson Simons [pictured] is also participating, and will give Bermuda the distinction of fielding one of the oldest competitors in the Island Games. Last year, at 78-years-old, Mr Simons was the oldest of all the 7,000 plus athletes who competed in the 2010 Commonwealth Games in Delhi, India

The 2011 Natwest Island Games will be held in the Isle of Wight from June 25th to July 1st. Over 25 islands will compete in 14 sports including golf, swimming, bowling, track and field, archery, tennis, badminton and more.

  1. Think about it says:

How does someone go about joining or getting info about the rifle club? I always hear about it but never see any information or a number in the phone book

    • Hmmm says:

Just go out Parkside or up 42nd street, they both have gun clubs….

    • I'm just sayin...... says:

You can send an email to crrpcbda@gmail.com for more information. You have to be a resident of Bermuda and over 21 year of age.

    HOLD UP bie,

how come guyz need a permit 2 take guns OFF of de island, dun?! Thatd be like if a customs officer caught you leavin wif a jar of de ebola virus and wuz like “oh sorry sir, but you need a special permit to remove this DEADLY VIRUS from our HEALTHY country…were just gunna keep it here a little while longer, kewl?”

WAKE UP PPL, somethin fishy is goin on here. i mean, you dont see guyz up 42nd gettin permits to bring there guns INTO the island….DOES THAT MAKE SENS 2 U???

My boy Peanut-Elbows (long story) was part of de rifle club back n de day (like prolly 1983), n he wuz tellin me that most guyz dineen care about guns. You culd literally walk thru de airport wavin a rifle around and customs guyz would be like “hello sir, have a good day!” like there weren’t noffin wrong. Times change I spose.

It worries me that guyz r givin rifle club members a hard time like this…its de slippery slope to fashism. WUTS NEXT PPL? you gonna try to stop me from taking a CORDLESS DRILL OFF DE ISLAND?? “OH SORRY SIR, DAT JAR OR PEANUT BUTTER LOOKS SUSPICIOUS…YOU MAY NEED A PERMIT 4 DAT” its 2 much 2 soon, and makes me nervous like my boy Jervis.

good luck to all de bredrens at de Natwest games tho…nuff respect, try not to shoot 2 many guyz.

    • Wow says:

What planet do you come from?? The gun club has been around for years!! When I say years, I used to go to the range with my father when I was like 8 or 9 years old!! I am now 51 – do the math – if you can!!You are as stupid as your’boy’, if you believe a story like that!! ALL FIREARMS are stored at Warwick Camp! And need to be transported according to the law!!
There has never ever been any trouble within the club!! Get a damn life! And please stop with the foolish “Bermudian” slang!! Right now you make Terry look good!!

      • Think about it says:

        @ Wow

Take it easy mate, you do know that he is just joking right? It’s not that serious, chill.

    • Truth says:

I hope you all realize “Clafe” is an educated ex-pat working a high-paying job that he is waaaay more qualified for than any of us will ever be (so he deserves the job over us) and he is totally making fun of the idiot Bermudians who speak like this. He is very cleverly pointing out how dumb, uneducated, lazy-minded and “iggnant” we are. It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to mimic the barely English so many of us speak because we think it makes us sound “kewl” or “street.”

Way to go Clafe – keep it up until BDA realizes what a bunch of idiots it is generating. You really have a knack for pointing out how dumb we sound! Thank you!

      • Think about it says:

        Speak for yourself @Truth.

I don’t know about you, but I am Bermudian and I don’t speak like that, at all. I think it’s funny and I’m glad he is pointing out how stupid most of these Bermudians sound. The sad thing is, they think the people that speak correctly sound funny and think that it’s a bad thing.

      • Wow says:

        @Truth….speak for yourself!!

      • Missy says:

        @Truth

You can speak for yourself, because I am not dumb, uneducated, lazy-minded or ignorant! And If you have done a little bit of traveling instead of just sitting home watching BBC News(thinking all British people sound that way) you will understand that all English speaking countries have their own slang and dialect and that goes for all countries no matter what language they speak. And there is a time and place for everything, of course if where just going out socially we are going to use a bit slang and if you say you’ve never used slag. That means you lying.

If you are a Bermudian I suggest you pack your bags and leave because you negativity and demoting words and expressions are not welcome. And if you are not Bermudian than why the hell are you still here, pack your bags and go back home. OH no wait, Bermuda gave you something you’ve always wanted –to live on a beautiful island, make money and brag to all your people back home about the great life you are living!!!!!!

I must stress there are many Bermudians that are educated, active in the community and in their families lives, and know how to carry themselves in all walks of life when the time sees fit.

SO ONCE AGAIN I STATE IF YOU HAVE AN ISSUE WITH MY COUNTRY (BERMUDA) PACK YOUR BAGS AND LEAVE AND DON’T LOOK OR EVER COME BACK, BECAUSE YOUR RUDE AND CRUDE REMARKS ARE NOT WELCOME!!!!!! And this goes to all the other guest workers that have an issue with Bermuda!!!

  3. Terry says:

    (1) You will need a trowel

    (2) A concrete Block

    (3) Mortar

    (4) See previous…..

  4. Think about it says:

    @ Clafe

Lol, thanks for that. It still doesn’t answer my question though.

  5. SMDH LOL says:

wow!! we could use these guys to shoot off all these a$$es that have illegal guns lol but its a crying shame that they gave them trouble to take their guns out but yet its so easy for the police to let them in, mmm i’m just saying, considering all these broke a$$ fools that are out shooting people cant afford to bring them in. lol Makes me wonder.

  6. Denise Richardson says:

You can find them in Smiths’s off of St. Mark’s Road. Yes, they are there every weekend from 9:30 in the morning disturbing residents of this area…

    • I'm just sayin...... says:

      Hello Ma’am,

The Coral Reef’s Rifle & Pistol Club conduct target practice ONLY at our range in Prospect and on Warwick Camp’s range. We can understand your concerns but shooting as sport has been actively pursued in Bermuda since the early 1800′s at various locations throughout the island. There was at one time up to 10 (ten) recognized Club’s dedicated to the sport, but due to changes in Bermuda’s laws and society that number has been reduced down to two. Again, while our Club and its membership which is made up of ordinary Bermudians just as yourself are sensitive of any undue impact our sport might have on you our neighbors, we all have to exist in the same 21 sq. miles.

      Regards,

      David Dumont

      President

Coral Reef’s Rifle and Pistol Club
      Bermuda’s Shooting Club since 1963

I live on St. Mark’s Road and have NEVER heard them…

  7. Denise Richardson says:

Please omit my original comment regarding this club.

They have just informed me that they are at Warwick Camp.

The group who shoots in Smiths are The Bermuda Trap and Skeet Club.

    Thanks
