Local Sailors Compete in USA & Europe

July 18, 2011

Last week was a busy week for the island’s sailors with local representatives sailing in both Europe and the US.

Youth Olympian Owen Siese represented Bermuda at the 41st ISAF Youth Sailing World Championships in Zadar, Croatia. The 49 boat Laser Radial Boys division completed 12 races in mainly light conditions. Siese struggled a bit in the light winds and finished 39th overall.

The event was won by Maxime Mazard of France. Previous winners in the Laser Class in this event include America’s Cup winners Dean Barker and Russell Coutts of New Zealand.

Four other local Laser Radial sailors travelled to Brant Beach New Jersey to compete in the 2011 Laser Radial North American Championship, an open event for adults and youth sailors. Jordan and Jason Saints, James Anfossi and Mackenzie Cooper all sailed the ten race regatta with conditions ranging from light air upwards to 30 knots.

All four sailors made the Gold Fleet which was created from the top half of the 147 boat fleet after 6 races. Jason Saints ended up being the top Bermudian finishing 20th while Jordan Saints was next at 23rd. Anfossi finished in 38th and Cooper in 45th. Avery Fanning of Charleston/Lauderdale YC won and was followed by Ian Barrows of Pleon/St. Thomas YC and Max Lopez of Raritan YC.

Optimist sailors Ceci and Mikey Wollmann competed at the 2011 Texas Youth Race Week on the waters of Galveston Bay, a warm up for the US Optimist Dinghy Nationals which starts later this week. Ceci Wollmann ended in 8th place overall with 21 points and was the 2nd girl overall. Mikey Wollmann finished 30th.
