First Hurricane Of 2011 Atlantic Season Forms

Tropical Storm Irene became the first hurricane of the 2011 Atlantic season early this morning [Aug.22] as it neared Puerto Rico, the U.S. National Hurricane Center [NHC] said.

The Bermuda Weather Service said Irene is not a threat to Bermuda, and the closest point of approach to Bermuda within 72 hrs is forecast to be 814 nm to the south-west at 5pm on Wednesday, August 24.

Hurricane Irene is carrying top winds of 75 miles an hour and is centered about 25 miles west of San Juan, Puerto Rico. Forecasters said that Irene was likely to strengthen over the next 48 hours.

A hurricane warning is in effect for parts of Puerto Rico and the northern coast of the Dominican Republic,a hurricane watch is in effect for some of the northern coast of Haiti, and for the Central Bahamas and tropical storm conditions are expected in much of the rest of the region.

    Hurricane names are recycled every six years and are known in advance (http://www.nhc.noaa.gov/aboutnames.shtml) which is why you see the same names over and over. They are retired if they cause significant damages or deaths.
