Sixteen Graduate: Hospitality Institute Programme

Recently the Minister of Business Development and Tourism Patrice Minors recognised the success of 16 young Bermudians who completed the Bermuda Hospitality Institute’s (BHI) START (Skills, Tasks & Results Training) programme.

START is a hospitality training initiative that involves young Bermudians being provided a quality career based educational experience aimed at preparing each student for the vast opportunities available in hospitality industry. The BHI partnered with the Bermuda College, which provided the complimentary use of its facilities for training.

The programme was taught by instructors Shawn DeShields, Hospitality/Business Senior Lecturer, Bermuda College, and Joann Adams, Director Staff Development, Berkeley Institute.

Their successful completion guaranteed each student full-time summer employment within the hospitality industry at one of the Island’s many hotels and restaurants. Ultimately, students are certified in one of the programme’s internationally recognized areas of certification.

Minister Minors said, “One of the goals of the BHI is to afford those young people who have a passion for the hospitality industry an opportunity to cultivate their interests by exposing them to first class educators who have a depth of knowledge in the industry.”

“In turn they are given an opportunity to apply the techniques they’ve learned by actually working in the field in some of our hospitality establishments. We are thrilled at the success of these individuals, who we believe are the future leaders of our tourism industry.”
