2nd Shooting: Man Shot In Hamilton Parish

October 8, 2011

[Updated] A man in his 30s is recovering from gunshot wounds after being shot last night [Oct.7] in Hamilton Parish.

A Police spokesperson said, “Around 9:10pm on Friday, October 7th police and first responders attended a reported road traffic collision resulting in injury in the North Shore Road, Hamilton parish area.”

“However, subsequent inquiries determined that the collision occurred following a confirmed firearm incident where a Pembroke man in his 30s sustained a non-life threatening gunshot wound.”

“The victim was taken to King Edward VII Memorial Hospital via ambulance for treatment. As a result, officers cordoned off the scene and conducted a thorough search of the area.

A full investigation into both incidents is underway. Any witnesses or anyone with any information is encouraged to contact the Serious Crime Unit on 295-0011 or the independent, confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.”

Sources say the two men were riding along the Radnor Road/Shelly Bay area when another motorcycle with two persons on it pulled alongside them and opened fire, causing them to crash. Traffic was blocked in the area for hours after the incident as Police investigated the scene.

We are made to understand officials initially treated the incident as an accident, until details of the prior shooting attempt came to light hours later. Unofficial reports indicate the victim was shot in the hand/arm.

There have been three shootings in the last 72 hours, and four in the past week.

A few hours after this shooting, a man was shot in the parking lot of the ClayHouse Inn on North Shore. These two incidents follow after the broad daylight shooting attempt on a Department of Parks worker in Paget on October 5th. In addition, shots were fired in the St Monica’s Mission area on October 2nd.

    Thank God it was Friday.

    • Wats Friday got to do with it says:

Wat does that mean (Friday is a better day of the week to get shot) ????

  2. Ash says:

WHAT A SHAME! COME ON BERMUDA! END THE VIOLENCE! LIFE IS TO SHORT

    • Black Soil says:

When will our government get serious with crime. PLP know who the gangstaas are. Why they do nothing is scary.

  3. goodbye tourism says:

I guess all the narrow-minded Bermudians who hate tourists will be happy in the years ahead when they stop coming completely. Good job Bermuda, you are well on your way to becoming an awful place where nobody wants to live. You won’t need to worry about work permit term limits much longer either…

    • I gotta be me says:

You got that right! No tourists, no workers and I’m thinking about gettin out too now… sad.

    • Dumbcommentors says:

…Where else in the world will you find a place that isn’t affected by crime lol??? Go to America a place with one of the highest prison populations… and with a failing economy??? Go to Europe that struggles with the same things???? You’re comment is really dumb, Bermuda is no paradise, it is indeed like the rest of the world so I fail to understand why people leave dumb comments like this…

      • the reason being .. says:

They leave ‘dumb comments’ because this little rock is so small you can’t get away from the crap like you can in ‘real countries’ overseas.
Those countries don’t falsely advertise themselves as a ‘crime free paradise’.

Keep the denial and mistaken comparisons up . We should not be likening ourselves to other places when we beg people to come here under the guise that we’re ‘another world’ and they’ll be safer than they are where they come from !

        • Bermudians jus Talk says:

i dont see any tourist bein hurt by gun crime 1st of all,2nd its only my fellow brothers killn and trying to kill each other.Tourist have stopped coming to BDA long b4 anyone was gettn SHOT!!!High prices and no value 4 $$$$,along wit n’real entertainment.Lets b real it will b the bus service, the lack of acccomadations and the silly fines imposed on Tourist that cost them there spending $$$ cause they bring in a joint!!!!!!Just remember Jamaica has lots of crime but there tourist arrival stats shot up in 2010/11,so lets b real and start makin comments and actions based on fact n’real common sense then kneejerkness and emotion

          • Not jerking says:

How many people (tourists) have you spoken to that chose to come here instead of going to JA based on what they heard about both places ?
Then they come to ‘safe , peaceful’ Bda and hear about a shooting in the next parish while they’re here , or maybe they’re a victim of another handbag robbery ..see current top story.

Sure tourist numbers were plummeting before the shootings became commonplace , we did that to them by charging them a ton of money to come here and then we spat on them with stinking attitudes. But don;t underestimate negative word of mouth when they come here and get exposed to all this stuff while they think they’re coming to some little paradise.

And in case you didn’t know it , most of those tourists that go to JA stay in gated compounds . My neighbors just got back from one. Large country (island) in most ways , much more beautiful than Bermy and they had a great time because they were isolated from the riff raff behaviour and felt safer than they do in their own home here. (does it matter if I say they’re IB execs too ? )

        • mike says:

I agree there, not only is crime out of control but there’s nothing to do here, everything is exspensive and u have to put up with all the crap that flows through this island. At least in the states/canada or where ever u have choices and more room to move around.

        • pessimist x -1 says:

          i beg to disagree….

as an expat being invited by the employer to come here, i was sent an info magazine to increase my awareness of Bermuda…. i think BERMUDA is the name of the magazine 2010 edition…. and I can remember it claiming how Bermuda is enjoying a zero crime rate…. well and then… that was 2010…

well.. the shootings do not directly affect economy… but it is pointing to the current direction of this nation… which is nowhere but down…

at this point, pointing finger will not help…. still…. everything starts at home…. parents play a significant role in molding their children into a contributing citizen of the future…. holding more than one job may not be excused as i myself grew up with both my parents working overseas… however, even via phone call or internet communication, my parents were still able ti instill in me the value of education, respect for the others, and contentment, among so many others….. moreover, i don’t see my parents working hard so that they can parade themselves on nice signature clothings and jewelries…. they work hard in trying to cope up with university tuition and stuff…

mass media can be blamed as well as this is how our young minds were made aware of sex and violence…. still….. our inert tendency to explore cannot be helped… again.. parental guidance is a must… from time to time…. time spent together watching TV gives parents a chance to help their children discern what should be emulated and what should be not…. even that 15-min ride to school can be taken as an opportunity to dsicuss things with children….

      • Arthur - Atlanta says:

So true about the crime in a lot (not all) parts of the world. Also true as the first reply to your statement about the little rock and getting away from certain areas. I left Bda two years ago and moved to Atlanta and although there is crime in ‘certain’ areas here, I feel very safe here in my location both day and night. It is one thing to ‘hear’ about something and believe it true and it is a totally different thing to ‘live’ that something and find out it is not true. In a nutshell, although Bermuda will always be my home of birth, I am one of hundreds of Bermudians living and working overseas for years that have no desire to rush back home.

      • lissa says:

        I agree with you dumbcommentors..

        • Head not stuck in the sand says:

So it’s ok by your reasoning for Bermuda to go to hell in a handbasket because you think the rest of the world is a ghetto ?

You need to travel a bit (and not to US east coast inner cities) and wise up.

  4. mamasboyz says:

Bernews, please confirm the accident after 2am this morning in the Camp Hill area and the young man (name withheld) is fighting for his life??

  5. Good! Everybody leave I can probably find a job n stop hanging on the corner gettin in 2 sh1t!!

    • Are you serious!!! says:

If everyone leaves, there would not be to many jobs to go to……

Be careful what you ask for!

    • mike says:

Typical bermudian attitude, whats stopping u now from getting off of ur lazy a$$ and finding a job? Go wash F’in dishes!!!

  6. It is what it is says:

Shootings happen WORDLWIDE!!!! even in Jamaica, Aruba and all those other tourist type destinations….we are not exempt..and as far as getting out of here..where are you going to move..? to the moon???? The shootings are not the ONLY reason behind this FUc*^D up economy, which too by the way is worldwide…

    • Hudson says:

True, but Bermuda is boasting higher gun crime statistics than most of the US, Canada, Australia, NZ and parts of Europe PER CAPITA. This aint cool – if you are happy to be like Jamaica or South Africa, so be it. I like the place that i grew up in – safe, no gangs, little to no hard violence – sure some petty theft and similar, and sure, there were ‘pockets’ but really I would boast to my friends overseas how great Bermuda was. I would boast how great the Bermudian people were – I can’t do that now, and it makes me sad.

So continue to live in a world where you are satisfied with mediocrity, where you are satisfied with crime that matches or exceeds other not so great places, but allow me and others to express our dissatisfaction and sadness about where we have gotten ourselves, and where we are heading…

      • It is what it is says:

@ Hudson maybe you should re-read what I have written…No where have I written that I am “SATISFIED with mediocrity” it’s just that my head is not buried in the sand and like my name says it is what it is….I respectfully allowed you to express your opinion just as you should allow me to express mine..also note that Bermuda is much much smaller than the places that you mentioned so yes our statistics would stand out that much more…nothing will ever be like it was in the past………

    • confused says:

Need a “LIKE” button for this

    • Are you serious!!! says:

Canada and China’s economy is actually Booming!!!!

And Although shootings happen worldwide there are still many countries that too much crime does not happpen. Sinapore, New Zeland, Norway, Japan, Iceland, Switzeland, Denmark, Cyprus, Luxemburg, to name a few.

In St. John, there is a huge amunt of petty theft, not violent crime. Same goes for CUBA, in Havana crime may be bad, but with a population of 11,000,000, they even do better than BERMUDA (at the moment). Ooh, and Castro don’t let NOBODY MESS WITH HIS TOURIST…….

      • It is what it is says:

Bermuda has outpriced itself LONG BEFORE the shootings started to get out of hand…but THIS will be used as one of the excuses to hide behind the REAL REASON that it is too bloody expensive and we don’t have much too offer….check the prices of hotel rooms per night..even the so called local rate is higher than places throughout the world……

    • Joe Blow says:

There was a time when shootings weren’t happening here. Because it ‘happens elsewhere’ does it now make it alright for it to happen here? We have to accept this as the way of life in Bermuda now?

  7. STEWEY BABCOCK says:

Can’t quite hide or ignore a bullet wound . Will he talk now that he has absolute proof that his life means nothing to the shooter ?

  8. Justice says:

People have no respect for life. … bring back the death penalty.. life for life..

    • Your Comment Is Awaiting Moderation says:

We had the death penalty and certain Bermudians rioted against it in December 1977 – after two men had been found guilty of murdering the Governor, his Aide De Camp and the dog Horsa in cold blood. So you get what you wish for. Live with it!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  9. Billy M says:

Where, exactly, on North Shore Rd.? “North Shore Road, Hamilton Parish area” doesn’t exactly narrow it down!

    • Foxtrot Oscar says:

It said it was in the Radnor Road/Shelly Bay area of North Shore.

      • Billy M says:

Right; didn’t see that in the original report. Thanks.

  10. People's Poet says:

    I say – Oh fack!

    Axpets leein Bermy
Term limits really dey scure me
    PLP tinka only dur paychacks
    Blame slayrry insteadda demkets.

So wur vill it end dey say
Who de fak knows but pray
Dat the term limit ting will get lifted
An gemblin will be to us gifted.

So that’s four shootings in less than a week.
I’m too scared to go to the National Stadium to
    watch the game!
What’s the word Minister of Safety?

  12. What is going on? says:

Sad, sad, sad…… besides everything else that is going on….. this type of activity will be the downfall of this Island. I, as a third generation Bermudian, have now decided it is time to make a move and get the hell out.

  13. What is going on? says:

Police, Government, please, please do something….. this is absolutely out of control…. how can anyone feel safe anywhere in Bermuda now.

  14. confused says:

At the end of the day everyone needs to stop bitching and start talking. In an island where my auntie heard I had snuck out at 14 to meet a girl before my mother, somebody knows who is pulling the trigger. Guns don’t kill, a#$holes kill! And a big man/women has the nuts to stop it. Its not going to happen with customs, the cops, the plp, the ubp the oba the curch of the courts. Its going to stop with the neighbour, the friend, the uncle, the cousin the bredrin opening there mouth and taking control of the situation and control of our home. We are privaleged to live in this paradise, start acting like it!!!!!!

  15. Moto says:

The pattern is always the same. Two guys dressed in dark clothing, with dark visors, riding a dark bike with the pillion passenger riding shot-gun.

It maybe time to take some draconian measures for a while such as no pillion passengers, with maybe a few exceptions such as a child being a pillion passenger or husband and wife.

We may also need to modify the laws to allow police to ease drop on suspected gang members cell phone conversations.

I am a great believer in the use of technology and we may need to employ more technology, such as more surveillance systems, electronic vehicle tagginga and tracking systems.

The final solution maybe to deploy some drone technology and take out the gang terrorists.

  16. Lets Talk Some Sense says:

Two words…”death penalty”…This has got to stop and some serious repercussions need to be implemented. We should not have to live amongst terrorists!

  17. PLAIN AND SIMPLE says:

    Two words DEATH PENALTY!!
If one has the courage to kill another, then they should have no fear in being sentenced to DEATH!

  18. lordsaint says:

I am a Bermudian that has live my first 20 years in bda and in the states in my early twenties then back to bermuda. The big difference is that there r place u know not to go into at night so u avoid them and u are safe. But in Bermuda its everywhere u cannot run from it and soon people will be caught in the war zone. i find it funny that this whole mess came right after Premier Brown took over leadership. plp has always been about what the country can do for them and not what i can do for the island. i have been living in the uk and i must say that Bermuda crime is way higher then where i live, and there’s over 500,000 people living in this shire. I was reading the paper here and they have very big govt construction building and yes they build bigger buildings then in Bermuda and do it on time and under budget. Why can’t PLP, everything that they have touched have turned to poo well poo. Wake up Bermuda we gave them a chance and they suck at running the island. Funny if they (plp) was a store that ran it like they do Bermuda they wouldn’t have it very long before it went bankrupt. But I guess the people of Bermuda r not total bankrupt yet. I was so proud of my little island and now there are no words to express it. I know one thing its time for a new government. government.

  19. Tommy Chong says:

This is what happens when BDA Police devote their manpower to raiding seniors cruise ship rooms and arresting them for hemp mix and arresting guys in club bathrooms for blazing a slight J. This type of thing just fuels the whole underground criminal industry. The same way gangs took advantage of prohibition of alcohol in the 1930′s and taking out competition at the same time gangs in bermuda are taking advantage prohibited substances and taking out the competition.

Instead BDA Police manpower would be of better use by putting the squeeze on known gang members at all times. All police services should have a list of these gang members & any time one of these guys travels in, out or around Bermuda they should be pulled aside, searched. If found with anything giving reason for arrest they should be and then when found guilty charged with the ridiculous fines the tourists found with minute amounts of contraband are getting. The more unprofitable it becomes for someone to be in a gang the more undesirable it will be to be a gang member. Take away these guys big money rolls, Gold Chains & fancy cars and then they won’t look so cool to the young wannabe gangsters idolizing them.

  20. Joya says:

HELP SOMETHING SOMEONE SAVE OUR YOUNG MEN.

  21. Joya says:

    OH YOU SHOOTERS..

Bermuda’s future waiting in the wings..
trembling in fear of what your generation brings.
And the foundations of order, reels under the actions of
    your mindless disregard and slaughter.

    Cease, Peace
    Know you kill your seed?
    This is self genocide.

And when the dust settles in your tomorrow-
No honor or glory or statement will remain,
    Of your un-Godly actions -
ALL WILL HAVE BEEN IN VAIN.

    BECAUSE….
You will have ignorantly, callously killed
    your SEED.

    AND
No trace or memory of you will breed..
No civilization FROM YOU to succeed..
CAUSE YOU WILL HAVE KILL OFF YOUR OWN SEED.
    CEASE, CEASE,CEASE.

  22. Terry says:

Dose it matter where it occured……really….

  23. lissa says:

Very Beautiful Joya and so true!!

  24. Billy M says:

Of course it matters. It’s a news story. “Where” is a very basic question. Particularly relevant to those living in the area or driving nearby at the time. It doesn’t change the “meaning” of the event, but it most surely matters.

  25. sandgrownan says:

Nah, why bother, who really cares?

  26. Terry says:

My point was Billy that the people who live in the area are well aware of whats going on. This is, once again and area where shootings have occured, burglars have been beaten et al.

People cannot just stop driving/riding through that stretch of road.

Next you’ll want to make everyone use Rual Hill/Harbor Road and make the South Round-a-bout a walking path. Get real. These incidents are planned and when the opportunity presents itself, it occurs.

    Opportunity, Means, ………

  27. Terry says:

    It’s called the “MOM”………
