Bassett Convicted Of Attempted Murder

October 29, 2011

Marico Bassett, who shot a man in broad daylight outside a West End bar, was convicted of attempted murder by a Supreme Court jury yesterday [Oct. 28].

Mr. Bassett, 21, gunned down 45-year-old Randy Lightbourne outside the Charing Cross Tavern in July, 2010.

At an earlier Supreme Court trial in March Mr. Bassett was found guilty on a charge of unlawfully possessing ammunition.

He was not, however, found guilty on the attempted murder charge, as the jury was unable to reach a verdict. A retrial was ordered which got underway on October 18.

Victim Randy Lightbourne, 45, told the juries at both trials that he had recognised Mr. Bassett when the alleged gunman rode a motorcyle into the parking lot of Somerset’s Charing Cross Tavern at approximately 5pm on July 23, 2010 and began shooting at him.

Mr. Lightbourne, who was shot seven times, spent months recovering from multiple gunshot wounds. Mr. Bassett, 20, was taken into custody soon after the shooting and charged with attempted murder.

The gun used by Mr. Bassett has subsequently been linked to multiple West End shootings — including the murder of 29-year-old Colford Ferguson.

Crown prosecutors argued Mr. Bassett shot Mr Lightbourne to “move up the ranks” of a West End gang he was said to be a member of.

Mr. Bassett will be sentenced next month.

Bernews – thanks for relating to the gang as ‘a west end gang’ and not mentioning the name of the gang in this story. The press gives these guys and their members to much repect my mentioning these made up gang names. When articles are printed or stated in the media they shud be referred to by the area they come from and not by their own given gang name. They shud not be given that repect!
