Tom Pettit Thanksgiving Essay Contest

Bermuda’s secondary school students are once again being asked, “Why I Am Thankful”, as the annual Thanksgiving Essay Competition is underway across the island.

The competition, now in its 14th year, challenges students to reflect on positive aspects in their lives and in 500 words or less write a compelling essay, in hopes of winning the first place prize, a $1,000 grant. Finalists will receive $500 prize grants for writing excellence with each winner’s school receiving matching grants.

14th Thanksgiving Essay Contest Launch
Since its inception in 1997, talented young writers and their schools have been awarded over $70,000 in prizes. All secondary school students in Bermuda are eligible to enter and full details are available at school head offices. Entries must be received by Wednesday, 2nd of November 2011 at 4.30 pm at the Rosedon Hotel, Pembroke.

This year’s judging panel includes: Julie Foggo, Ministry of Education Teacher Mentor; Bermuda Sun Senior Reporter, Raymond Hainey; educator, Florenz Maxwell; Sirkka Huish, Royal Gazette Senior Reporter and Minister of Economy, Trade & Industry Kim Wilson.

The competition is generously supported by on-island companies providing the monetary grants. This year’s sponsors include: Orbis Investment Management Ltd., Edmund Gibbons Ltd and the XL Foundation.

The contest is named for the late Tom Pettit, an Emmy-award winning NBC TV correspondent who briefly lived in Bermuda. It is organized through the registered charity, “The Pettit Grants” with its goal of inspiring tomorrow’s journalists. The board includes: Hon. Robert Farmer, Mervin Holland, Patricia Pettit, Muriel Richardson and Kim White.
