Faulkenberry Swings Into “Spider-Man” Role
Face it, tiger, she just hit the jackpot! Bermudian Rebecca Faulkenberry [pictured] is joining the cast of Broadway’s “Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark” this month.
She replaces Jennifer Damiano as the title character’s love interest Mary Jane Watson.
The musical is inspired by over 40 years of the Marvel Comics character co-created by writer/editor Stan Lee and artist Steve Ditko. “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark” follows the story of teenager Peter Parker, whose unremarkable life is turned upside-down when he’s bitten by a genetically altered spider and must learn that with great powers comes great responsibility.
The production — the most expensive ever mounted on Broadway — features original direction by “The Lion King’s” Julie Taymor, music and lyrics by Bono and The Edge from U2 and a book co-written by Ms Taymor, Glen Berger, and Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa.
A graduate of the Bermuda High School for Girls, Ms Faulkenberry recently made her Broadway debut in the ’80s musical “Rock of Ages”. She was reprising the lead role of Sherrie, which she played in the show’s US national tour.
Earlier this year she appeared on “Dancing With The Stars” along with fellow “Rock Of Ages” cast members and last year Ms Faulkenberry was featured on “The Tonight Show” with Jay Leno when the musical’s cross-country tour was commencing.
In “Spider-Man: Turn Off The Dark”, she joins a principal cast that also includes Reeve Carney and Patrick Page, who continue on in their roles as Peter Parker/Spider-Man and Norman Osborn/Green Goblin, respectively.
The Foxwoods Theater where Ms Faulkenberry will be performing is not far from the New World Stages where fellow Bermudian Nicholas Christopher is appearing in a critically-heralded revival of the Pulitzer Prize-winning musical “Rent.”
