Bieber Has A Rankin-Bass Christmas
Superstar Justin Bieber is coming to town in a new Christmas video in the guise of one of the Animagic puppets from a TV special made by Bermuda’s Arthur Rankin Jr.
The Canadian pop singer brings his perky persona to the puppet party as he joins young Kris Kringle and his pal Topper the Penguin — the stars of Mr. Rankin’s animated classic “Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town” — for some holiday help, reindeer games and, you know, a funky jam session.
The 1970 television special “Santa Claus Is Coming To Town” starred actor Fred Astaire as the narrator and Mickey Rooney as Kris Kringle/Santa Claus and tells the story of how Santa Claus and several Claus-related Christmas traditions originated.
Justin Bieber’s version of the classic song is the latest single from the teen heart-throb’s Christmas release “Under the Mistletoe” and the specials Bermudian Mr. Rankin produced with American partner Jules Bass — including all-time ratings champ “Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer” – are also available on a new DVD set “The Original Christmas Classics.”
The original Christmas song of the same name was introduced on radio by Eddie Cantor in 1934.
Harrington Sound resident Mr. Rankin,s now retired, from the entertainment industry has lectured on showbusiness, at the Bermuda College in recent years and has also written and directed plays staged at City Hall. He is married to Olga Rankin – who last year became the oldest newly-qualified lawyer ever called to the Bermuda bar.
