Video: Lennon Tribute CD Auditions
At the end of the Beatles’ last concert — an impromptu performance on the rooftop of their London office building in 1969 — John Lennon joked “I’d like to say thank you on behalf of the group …and I hope we’ve passed the audition.”
And organisers say the Bermuda singers who turned up at Chewstick to try out for the upcoming Lennon tribute CD released to commemorate the British singer/songwriter’s creative resurgence on the island surpassed expectations at yesterday’s [Dec.17] audition.
“It was brilliant,” said Tony Brannon of the Ride The Wave charitable organisation who is spearheading the CD project along with businessman Michael Freisenbruch. “We had close to 30 talented young — and some not-so young — singers turn out and they gave their all.
“We won’t have any problem featuring some of the voices of Bermuda on this CD which is honouring a man who rediscovered his own voice on the island in the summer of 1980.”

Amateur Bermuda singers — some of whom performed Beatles or solo John Lennon numbers at the Chewstick audition — will be selected to perform on a tracks for the CD.
The album is being released next June to coincide with the unveiling of a sculpture commemorating the musician’s Bermuda interlude at the Masterworks Museum of Bermuda Art.
It will feature covers of John Lennon songs by established Bermuda musicians as well as international acts who have performed on the island.
The track singers selected from yesterday’s audition will perform on will be overseen by Felix Tod — the producer husband of Bermudian alternative folk/rock star Heather Nova – who attended yesterday’s Chewstick session.
