OBA: Leah Scott To Run In C#30

February 22, 2012

[Updated with video] This afternoon [Feb.22] the One Bermuda Alliance announced that attorney Leah Scott will represent them in Constituency #30 Southampton East Central.

The PLP previously announced that Stephen Todd will represent them in the Constituency. In the 2007 General Election, the PLP’s Zane Desilva won 52.2% of the vote vs UBP incumbent David Dodwell [569-521] in Southampton East Central.

Ms Scott, 52, was born in Tacoma, Washington. Her father was a pilot in the United States Air Force and was posted to Kindley Field in Bermuda in 1962.  In 1966, the Scott family left Bermuda, when her father was transferred to Andrews Air Force Base in Maryland, where Ms Scott attended grade school.

In 1980 she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. In 2002, she earned a Post Graduate Diploma in Law from the College of Law of England and Wales. She was awarded her Legal Practicing Certificate in 2004, and was called to the Bermuda Bar the following year.

She came back to Bermuda to live in 1984, and was granted Bermudian status in 2007. A long-time community activist, Ms Scott served as membership secretary for Bermuda Tri-Hedz and secretary for the Bermuda Bicycle Association and the Bermuda Triathlon Association. She sat on the board of PRIDE and is currently a director and secretary of the Sunshine League. She sits on the Executive of the Society of Trust and Estate Practitioners and is the Bermuda representative of the STEP Caribbean Conference Planning Committee.

Ms Scott’s full statement follows below:

Good Day All

It is a privilege and an honour for me to have been invited by the Leader of the Opposition, Craig Cannonier, to be the OBA candidate for Constituency 30, Southampton East Central. I am so excited about this opportunity and I thank God for it.

I love Bermuda. I have lived here for almost thirty years, and it has given me more than I could have ever dreamed in terms of family, friends and opportunity. But I am deeply concerned that Bermuda is losing its edge… we are in crisis, and if we do not re-chart our course now, it is inevitable that we will experience social and economic devastation of epic proportions.

Experience matters and mine has taught me that it is not only important to work hard, but that there are risks worth taking. Those who know me and know my story also know that I am one working mother who has never waited around for change. Change is a matter of choice. It is not to be waited for. It is a thing to be achieved. I cannot change Bermuda alone, but I can cast a stone into the waters to create many ripples.

Education is a priority for me, and I will take a real leadership role in transforming our school system into one that works for our children – a school system that is performance-oriented, led by experienced teachers, and driven to graduate innovators, entrepreneurs, tradespeople social leaders and multi-lingual global citizens.

In addition to working to improve our schools, I will be working to make our neighborhoods safer. There was a time when crime was almost non-existent in Bermuda, but, sadly, this is no longer true. Gang violence and drug crimes are ruining too many families.

We cannot continue to have expert after expert in, expending money on the preparation of reports with no intention of implementing the suggested recommendations. I am committed to actively working with and in the community to eradicate gang violence and gun crime.

My vision is a Bermuda with a 21st century school system; a Bermuda where every neighborhood is safe and a pleasure to live in; a Bermuda with beautiful open spaces, arts and culture and safe, revitalized streets; a Bermuda where everyone is gainfully employed. I am asking you to join me in my vision, because the return to prosperity for this Island will only come about if we work together as partners.

What counts now is not what we are against, but what we are for. While who leads us is important, what is equally important is what leads us — what courage, what convictions, what faith… and that will always be relevant no matter who wins or loses.

I promise to work with and for each and every one of you who, like me, is ready for change and is ready to make a difference.Political conditions in this Island are ripe for transformation.

Bermuda, you cannot continue to condone the current climate of cronyism, cover-ups and corruption. We must end, once and for all, a culture that has failed to deal with scandal and misconduct by bad politicians. What you continue to put up with is what you will have. We do not have any more time to waste.

A return to fundamental common sense in Government is needed. I want to help lead our Island back onto the path of growth and opportunity. I promise you that the very foundation of my public service to you will be honesty, duty, honour, and country.

Yesterday is gone. Tomorrow has not yet come. We have only today. Let us begin.

Oh boy!!! OBA is gonna cut some flip flop PLP’s ass in this election! Go Leah!!!

    • Yup says:

Southampton will be OBA all the way steering Bermuda first. Go Leah!!!!!!!

  2. Chris says:

Congrats Leah – go get ‘em!

    Great choice OBA!

  3. Jane says:

Go Leah – Congrats. Now this is a woman who wont compromise. I wish I was in your constituancy so I could vote for you.

  4. LaVerne Furbert says:

“Bermuda, you cannot continue to condone the current climate of cronyism, cover-ups and corruption. We must end, once and for all, a culture that has failed to deal with scandal and misconduct by bad politicians.”

As a lawyer, Ms. Soctt should know that allegations are just that, allegations. She should know that when one makes allegations, they need to show proof and in order to have a convictions. I’m hoping she will give examples of “cronyism, cover-ups and corruption”. If not, I don’t expect her to ever utter those words again.

    • Mad Dawg says:

Well I’m sure she will garner more than 8 votes, LaVerne.

Like it or not, cronyisn, cover-ups and corruption absolutely is the current climate. Just look at the headlines over the past few weeks. LaVerne, most of us can’t wait for the election. We wish Paula would call it, rather than clinging to power to the bitter end.

      • Rockfish #2 says:

        This is simply laughable!

The star of the infamous “Confused Negro” You Tube Video, and who managed to amass 8 votes in a primary, is now a political consultant!

    • Yup says:

Here’s your PROOF LaVerve….contract after contract after contract being handed out without any bids!!!!!! (you know all them “no bid” contracts). That is technically “not illegal” but it sure is corrupt and smacks as cronyism to say the very least!!!!

      • Whad up says:

How about the ommission centre, Proactive / Berkely, TCD, Court building, Cement Compnay deal, Cruise Ship Pier, need more

        • Yup says:

          PLP is WhadUp-Corrupt!!!!

        • jt says:

@Whad up, yes please provide us with more as voters have very good memories but they tend to be short at times

    • Bewildered says:

Nowhere has she said these allegations involved illegal acts. Whilst you would not agree, unethical behaviour by policitians and civil servants is just as bad as illegal, and even the current Premier has acknowledged that unethical behaviour has taken place. I believe that Dr Brown was indeed found to have acted in an unethical way some years back. Anyway, allegations are merely allegations until proved true, or false. One doesn’t need proof at the time of making the allegation, ask any lawyer.

      • LaVerne Furbert says:

As I’ve stated, people who live in glass houses should not throw stones.

        • Whad up says:

Heres another…People that get so few votes when in politrics, shouldnt give advice to other polititians.

          • Baltic Fury says:

            Ha-ha nice!!

Laverne, noone takes you seriously, you are a perfect advert for clown party you so fervently support.

        • sandgrownan says:

          What’s that? A threat?

Cronyism: Cruise ship pier, TCD emmissions
          Corruption: BHC, Berkeley,
          Cover Ups: Court Building

Need I go on…haven’t even got to boat, Stonnington, Tuckers….

        • LOL (original TM*) says:

So why are you throwing stones………………..

          LOLOLOLOLOLOLOLOL

    • JCS says:

Where there’s smoke, there’s fire Ms Furbert

    • navin johnson says:

you cannot be serious Mrs. Furbert…that may be your best yet….

    • Triangle Drifter says:

I wonder if Laverne has dual citizenship with Egypt? She sure spenda an awful lot of time in D Nile.

    • Rick Rock says:

LaVerne, the “Burgess standard” (as long as it’s not against a specific written law then it ‘ain’t no crime’ therefore it is perfectly ok), is not what most of us live by. Ewart was perfectly ok with things that were “unethical but not illegal”. He was also ok with the idea of “deceiving us because he had to”. He did that quite a lot, as it turned out. Deception is a big part of the PLP game-plan. Along with special deals, secrecy, and cover-ups.

I’m glad there are people like Ms Scott who have the sense and courage to bring this type of thing in the open. She, along with public servants with integrity, like the Auditor General and the Ombudsman, give us some hope that we’re not destined to live in a PLP cesspool of lies and corruption forever.

    • Railway says:

Cronyism, cover-ups and corruption are the trade marks of the PLP Government LaVerne ….. and you know it, so please stop wasting our time with you silly comments.

I dont know Leah Scott personally, but after listening to her last night she’d get my vote in an instant.

  5. C.B.A says:

Good choice OBA! Call the election!

  6. Uncle Boo says:

Congratulations Leah. You have my support and the support of many. Be used for Greatness!!!!!

  7. Jim Bean says:

cronyism examples: construction getting many of the small contracts around bermuda
ics getting major contracts or how about dennis correia and the cement silos.
Corruption – see above – oh and bhc and berkely and etc etc
cover-ups – oh how about the above
get a life laverne!!!!! you are awful

  8. Sinking says:

This is very interesting. I am not a PLP supporter but am trying to be objective. But I must agree with Ms Furbert (and its not often that I do). But if Ms Scott is going to outright call people corrupt and level allegations of cronyism etc then she needs to come with the goods or not come at all.
To begin her political career with this type of statement scares me as to what type of nonsense she may spew during this campaign.
    Very disappointing.

    • PEPPER says:

Sinking!!!!I can not believe what you have just posted !!!!talk about nonsense that is spewed out !!!!! just listen to talk radio and listen to Lavern this ex senator spew out her nonsence !!!!!!!!!!
Sinking ..where have you been living ? we all are aware of the former premier and his pay to play ..so in my opinion and others there was a lot of corruption going on ….take off the blinders!!!!

    • Truth (Original) says:

These allegations are in a few of the auditor generals reports. Nothing new at all. Where have you been ?

  9. VOTT!! says:

Excellent choice OBA! Specifically, your selection of quality female candidates continues to impress. You have much work to do but selections such as these give me HOPE.

  10. OvEr says:

The OBA brings a lot to look forward to. A party with a lot of new blood is exactly what this country needs.

    • observer says:

New blood doesn’t necessarily mean good blood… Just look at all the new blood being spewed and seeping in the land already. Is it all innocent blood? People are saying things need to change. Does new always mean its better?

  11. I wish .. says:

I wish she was running in C31 .. Then I wouldn’t have to ponder over the choice that I have ..
    1) Someone who should get out …who’s availability only muddies the water between OBA and UBP
    2) Someone , who because of their ‘history’ , I really don’t want to vote for
    3) An unelectable brown noser who wouldn’t be able to find employment outside of government

    • observer says:

One thing about Bermudians, they love a good talker… But talk is just talk. How many people does it take to mend a leaking roof? Cause all I see is the OBA/UBP just holding buckets and pans under a leaking roof… And if the OBA/UBP are going to fix it, what do they intend on fixing it with? They still haven’t spoke of any materials in which they will use in mending a permanent let alone temporary fix.
What business prospers just by pointing fingers?

  12. LaVerne Furbert says:

As I said, Ms. Scott needs to come with facts, not allegations. People in glass houses should not throw stones and believe me, the OBA is living in a glass house.

Just because the OBA has an army of anonymous cyber bullies, means nothing to me.

I admire Ms. Scott for putting herself forward as a candidate, even if it’s for the OBA, at least she had the courage of her convictions, unlike the lot of you.

If you want me to start listing the contracts that were given before 1998, I can.
By the way, where is Ms. Scott employed? Did I miss that?

    • no entiendo says:

Yes, that is a good question? Where is she employed?

    • Face the Nation says:

For sure she isn’t sucking from the dwindling pool of BIU members ,and btw , whatever happened to all that money that was in the BIU Construction Fund . I’m talking about a few million here , Bro.Ottie left it intact . And now ????

      • LaVerne Furbert says:

I guess somebody in the BIU has deposited those few million dollars in their own bank account. After all Black people are inherently thieves.

As I asked, where is Ms. Scott employed?

        • Black Bermudian Overseas says:

Ms. Furbert, why do you as an educated, politician and senator continue to give them a reason to question your common sense? enough of this
and we blacks are not inherently thieves! not all of us at least

          • Yup says:

Woooooo LaVerne……r we suppose to be on edge cuz you of all great grander ask where she work? Why don’t you pull yer finger out and figure out that…..and y should then pull that hood over yer head.

        • Shaking the Head says:

Posting from home now I see. Why do you want to know where Leay works – so you can harass her?

          • sticky says:

Well Rick Rock, these questions should be asked of all canidates not just the PLP,but i get it corruption and ascandals only started in 1998. How dishonest can you be.

        • Rick Rock says:

Oh, are we just asking random questions now LaVerne?

          Ok, I have a few.

Can the PLP candidates each tell us answers to the following questions:

          - have they ever taken illegal drugs?
          - have they ever been convicted of a crime?
          - have they ever had any gang connections?
          - what job do they currently do, and if it is a job which will conflict with being an MP, will they give it up prior to the election?
          - Are they willing to disclose all interests and potential conflicts they have, going back 5 years?
          - Are they willing to pass a law, right away, making it illegal for an MP to fail to disclose conflicts of interest?
          - Are they willing to implement PATI, retroactive 20 years, immediately?
          - What planning applications have you made during the past 10 years? What were the results?

How’s that LaVerne? Just a few simple questions that would completely disarm all this ‘cronyism’ and ‘corruption’ talk. Would all your PLP mates answer these questions?

          • Truth (Original) says:

MP are already required to disclose things that would create a conflict of interest. They just don’t do it and it is not enforced. In fact, if the already established financial instructions were followed we wouldn’t have any of this nonsense.

If punishments were meted out to MPs and civil servants for breaching these rules that are already in place, you would see a sharp decline in the predatory, unethical behavior.

            Only if….

        • Face the Nation says:

I repeat Bro.Ottiwell Simmons who happens to be Black ,left the Fund intact . The same building that you work from Ms.Furbert was built in great part out of the Construction Fund . Borrowed and replaced under the stewardship of Bro.Ottie .

        • Mad Dawg says:

LaVerne, where is Paula Cox employed?

    • Phoenix says:

Google her Laverne. You are supposedly a Research Writer. She works at Appleby

      • LaVerne Furbert says:

I have “Googled” her and she is no longer employed at Appleby.

Bernews, how is it that posters know where I’m posting from? When I read the comments all I see is “LaVerne Furbert says”. What’s the deal?

Yes, I am posting from home right now. It’s 7:30 p.m. and I’ve given a full day’s work for a full day’s pay.

All I’m asking is who is Leah Scott’s employer? What’s the big deal? Is she in private practice?

        • Shaking the Head says:

Does it worry you that it is known where you are posting from? If it does then maybe you now know how others feel when you ask where does such and such work. Big brother may be watching.

          • Yup says:

It’s a ploy to get you all worked up LaVerne..r u frothing from the mouth????? Take a drink.

        • Rick Rock says:

Yes LaVerne. We have special space age brainwave telepathy machines that tell us where you are posting messages from.

        • Todd says:

Laverne Furbert, if you look to the right of your post you will see a little funny face. That changes with every computer that you use. That is how they are assuming you are home.

    • Get a grip says:

This is the problem with the current Government. If we keep looking back at what people did in the past to justify what we do now, there will be no growth. That is like a child bullying another because the other person “is always bullying someone”. For crying out loud grow up. People have messed up for years. The UBP was not perfect while in power so instead of using their issues to condone your wrong doings, be the bigger people and show that it isn’t necessary to be unethical or corrupt in order to run a Country. I am so sick of hearing, “when the UBP were in power they…..”. So does that mean that the PLP should come in and spend all the money carelessly to get back at the UBP? Well if it does, then BRAVO, you did it. Bermuda is in so much debt that our children will be tasked to try to help get us out of it, if the spending keeps going the way it is.

    • Soooo says:

LaVerne… just so YOU know she works at Appleby (After all she is a Lawyer)… Duh.. common knowlesge… and you point is???

    • Sparky says:

I believe she’s employed at the Appleby law firm. Is this an issue for you LaVerne?

    • media says:

A Laverne – I think what is most telling on this subject has been Paula Cox’s actions since she took office as Premier. She has had to spend an enormous amount of time and energy working on her Good Governance initiative. That to me tells me that there was plenty of wrong doing taking place, specifically under Ewart Brown’s tenure. She continues to go to great lengths to try to reassure everyone that things are very different now than before. As we know, there was no love lost between her and Ewart Brown and she made that very clear. She despised his ways and now is making every effort to make amends for the damage he has done.

      • star man says:

“She despised his ways …” yet she ALLOWED Ewart to do anything he wanted because he bullied her, as he did everyone.

We need a real leader. We need a change.

  13. C..ing is B..Leaving says:

As there are so many apartments available maybe I’ll move into c#30 just to vote for you Leah ! Love Ya

  14. PEPPER says:

We will vote for Lea, and good ridince to Zane , this man is out for his own gain …he could care less for the people…..it is all about MONEY and his best friend the former premier taught him well.

    • Baltic Fury says:

yep, lots about Leah – and a welcome addition, BUT I so hope she beats the odious, smug ZDS. I would vote for Laverne over him.

  15. Stratton Hatfield says:

Congratulations Leah! It has been a pleasure working with you on the OBA education shadow team. I think you represent the change and ambition our country needs!

Bermudians deserve better and you will represent the constituents of #30 so well!

Thanks for standing up to cause and for putting Bermuda first!

  16. Cancer says:

Why does LaVerne keep on going back to 1998 – we are talking OBA vs Flip flop PLP here LaVerne not UBP vs flipflop PLP – get your years straight – more importantly get the players straight. BTW what kinds house does the PLP live in?

  17. Trident says:

if the great white hope d doddwell could not win this riding do you really think this woman will win this riding. remember false cyber bravado does not translate to bodies or votes. like i have since 1998 i’ll be laffing the day after election.

    • Rick Rock says:

Well Zane won and he’s white. So there goes your theory.

Of course, Zane’s not running there again because he’s too chicken. He wants a nice safe seat. Ewart pulled a few strings from the Vineyard and got Zaney a cushy PLP stronghold so he can relax. They put a new boy (Todd) in this one because they know they can’t win again. Particularly now that the OBA has put an articulate candidate in. It’s game over.

  18. Trident says:

cancer is king of the bernews posters. congrats!!!

  19. Black Bermudian Overseas says:

Bernews do you happen to have a video??

  20. Itsaboutallofus says:

Ms. Scott seems to be a decent candidate but i am bothered by her comments and her seemingly arrogant delivery. Perhaps she has somethign to offer, but I do believe the candidates of Southampton East CEntral will have a battle to the end.

People can have their own beliefs but her to speak so confidently about supposed corruption cronyism and coverups really bothers me. I doubt Ms Scott has been involved in any investigations by any authorities to be able to speak positively about anything. I believe she is obviously going on hearsay, or what the OBA hierarchy has told her to say.

At the end of the day, we have to vote our consciences and hopefully those in Southampton East Central will do just that.

    • Truth (Original) says:

What should really bother you is the cronyism, corruption and cover ups. Not her declaring it. The evidence is in various auditor general reports. Where have you been? If you call that hearsay, then yeah, she’s going off of hearsay.

After extensive investigations, the auditor filed several reports detailing cronyism, corruption and cover ups.

I say again, where have you been?

    • Shaking the Head says:

Ah, another puppet sent out to carry the message of hopelessness. Your comments are almost a mirror image of those from LaVerne. Maybe you work at the BIU, or merely cut and paste her requests. Rather like the Gang Report announced today. Odd how it is pretty much word for word, and laid out, as one put out in Nova Scotia. Telling evidence, not allegations, that the PLP and its limited faithful following have no original ideas, thoughts or vision.

    • Rick Rock says:

If you’re bothered by a “seemingly arrogant delivery”, government press conferences one the past 8 or 9 years must have driving you nuts.

There’s nothing ‘arrogant’ about her. She had a perfectly good delivery. In fact she’s articulate, and she brought up some issues that people are interested in.

      • media says:

@Rick Rock – Thanks for the laugh. The PLP are the epitome of arrogance.

  21. Real Talk (original) says:

Good luck Leah – an excellent choice of candidate! :)

  22. Clinton J. A. Paynter OBA Affiliated says:

Congratulations Leah…. You will represent the people of #30 well!

  23. Gambler says:

I would like for you Leah a very educated person give some sulotions something freah and new. I am sure you are capable or are you going to be like the rest.

  24. Somebody's Momma says:

The OBA is trying their hardest to show new faces but the tone of the release by Ms Scott shows an unfortunate side of Bermuda politics. For Ms Scott as a lawyer to level accusations such as cronyism, corruption, etc. at the government with nothing to back her accusations up shows she is not interested in a truthful or fair debate but more into sensationalism and soundbites.

  25. cedar says:

    Um, who is this woman?

  26. Cancer says:

Thanks again Trident – much obliged! Trying to speak the truth! Its time for change!

  27. Hmmmmm says:

The last candidate who had dual citizenship was forced to renounce one. Oh wait that’s just for some people. Let’s start there, shall we….

    • 1minute says:

He was a Bermudian that became American. When you become an American, you must denounce all previous citizenships. (Therefore he said that he did not want to be Bermudian).
She was born American and choose to become a Bermudian.

      • MinorMatters says:

ummm, when a person is a Bermudian and chooses to become a Citizen of another country, does that not smack of being UNPATRIOTIC? Just asking…

      • In General says:

This is only in the event that you want to run for office. You can hold Bermudian citizenship and American without any renouncing.

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

Don’t forget Mrs. Jackson. She is also an American who has Bermuda status.

  28. SMH says:

Well well, I see the UBA is all over this one. Leah is clearly a very good candidate although I believe Stephen would perform much better. What’s interesting is the overwhelming response this UBA ( yes UBA) candidate is receiving when all the others have received lackluster responses at best from thier own supporters. Clearly says a lot about the line up of the UBA and the fact that even the UBA supporters don’t like their own UBA selection that much…

I won’t criticize Leah just because she is UBA and will wait before passing judgment. I will say she immediately seem a cut above the rest of the UBA candidates, but she will come up short to an excellent candidate in Stephen Todd.

Oh yeah, stop picking on Laverne (she can defend herself), just like bullies to pile on when you really don’t have a whole lot to say. Get a life all of you.

    • Truth (Original) says:

I am not into “Laverne bashing” but she does herself no favors by calling everyone (like you and I) cowards for using a pen name to post. She isn’t above mudslinging and therefore when people respond to it, you shouldn’t call them bullies.

What I find interesting is that given the blatant PLP cover ups, cronyism and corruption (I don’t think even you can deny that), to me, it casts a negative light on all those who choose to run for the PLP after this indicting information.

Why would anyone want to be part of a party that is clearly comfortable with several “unethical but not illegal” transactions ?

      • Jack Jumping says:

Well if you really want an honest debate with LaVerne, than one should use their real name as she does. Other than that one should not call her names, as she does have the courage to use her name. I would not call her names, as I am not using my real name. It is not fair. You all seem to enjoy “bashing” LaVerne just because she does not share your political beliefs or often provides hard evident of facts. At least she does have the courage of her convicts to stand up and say who she is. Unlike us, we do not use our real names. So lets be real here….I find it so funny as I reflect on my recent reading the comments.

        • Truth (Original) says:

I don’t know if you even read my post but I clearly stated I am not into “Laverne bashing”.

Neither di i indicate anywhere that I desired a debate with her. Neither do I call her, or anyone else, names.

Further, pen names are a double edged sword. It allows people to be completely honest but it also allows people to be completely nasty. They ultimately serve a purpose.

You comment is all over the place and off base

  29. 1minute says:

La-Verne, why does it matter so much to you where she works? She may be on a sabbatical from law so she can put full efforts into politics.
So why is it so important to you to know where she works?
btw. looking at all your comments, including the “the OBA has an army of anonymous cyber bullies” and “After all Black people are inherently thieves”, it seem you think we are all white. Well, you are wrong…

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

It’s code, she wants black people to assume that whites are verbally beating her up or “lynching her”. However it’s a proven fact that she is a liar and has no problem with shirking integrity (which maybe useful for some on here to look up the word as lying is not included in the definition) and really has no credibility wither she posts with her real name or not. In fact seeing some new names here in support for the PLP means nothing to me as chances are they are the same people using different names as I have proved in the past with an other poster who posts for the PLP and that is a FACT.

      LOL

  30. Ron De Corner says:

Laverne, you just insulted all blacks by allegding that we are all thieves. You disgust me. Oh, and do you know anyone who really lives in a glass house? Bermuda planning codes do not allow such a thing so stop being so silly.

    • observer says:

Your a dumb azz… Read between the lines of what she (Laverne) was getting at.

  31. Jack Jumping says:

As a swing voter Mrs. Scott does not appear to be a candidate that I am willing to support. As first I said okay, but than she open her mouth. She seems to lack “political maturity” to fall for the words of Mr. Richards and the OBA followers. As a lawyer, I did expect more from her rather than to suggest such things were there is no evident to support her claims. I was hoping she would speak more to what she would do to improve the economy and Bermuda. She instead got caught up in a bitter battle of “Dirty politics”, which is expected from the bloggers of the OBA, but not intelligent persons that hold such legal positions in Bermuda. I looking for a higher level of presentation from candidates. More and More I see the Old UBP popping up in the OBA.. This is appalling coming from a legal lawyer, having legal knowledge myself. The bloggers of the OBA seem to represent the old nasty behaviours of the UBP, from my recent readings of their comments. Not sure their comments would encourage me to vote for the OBA. After all “I know what we got, but do not know what I will be getting”….it could turn out to be even more worst.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

“As a swing voter” clearly something your not I thought you were a fan of integrity or are you applying the “Lavern Standard”………

      LOL

    • cygnet says:

Maybe the OBA promised her something, like the the UBP promised me somethng if I became a UBP member. You can change the name but you cannot change the tactics!!!!

      • YOUNG OBA MEMBER says:

There are more UBP Members in the PLP than the OBA. Please Let the UBP Rest In Peace.

  32. Be For Real says:

After reading all the Laverne bashing, i have forgotten who the OBA lady is already, Ms Furbert, Keep up the good work.

And why does the bloggers feel the need to attack you like a pack of wild dogs, surely you can be that important.

    • LaVerne Furbert says:

Thanks “Be For Real”. I’m in good company. Look at how the OBA/UBP anonymous cyber bullies attack and demonise Premier Cox. These are probably the same people who called for Dr. Brown to step down so that the then Finance Minister Cox, could take over the helm of government. Not they’re crucifying her.

As you notice, I’ve not personally attacked Ms. Scott. All I asked was where she is working. Most people include that information when running for public office. Last week when the OBA/UBP announced Alexis Swan they said that she worked at Colonial Insurance Company, a company owned by Bermuda’s most wealthiest family, the Gibbons family.

Now if we want to talk about corruption, cronyism and cover-ups…..

      • Mad Dawg says:

        Where does Paula Cox work?

        • Jack Jumping says:

Thanks, I see the employee of Gibbons Company is OBA newest youngest candidate Ms Swan….well be careful OBA for calling the PLP cronyism. Does the Gibbons promise something to Ms. Swan? As I recall that term was more applicable to the UBP, and most of those folks are the OBA. I recall changing my vote because I was able to see that “Cronyism” was well practice within the UBP. So now I must think carefully were to put my vote now…….Cronyism has just shifted to the OBA?

          • Mad Dawg says:

Well, as LaVerne said earlier, if you have any evidence of this stupid idea show us. If not, admit it and stop saying it.

          • star man says:

@Jack Jumping: BWAA-HA-HA-Ha-Ha! That’s at you, not with you.

      • Girlden M Grillbait says:

I’d love to talk about corruption Laverne – specifically taking cash from foreign investment consultants (no paper trail) while an elected official. In most other jurisdictions this would result in being barred from office all the way to indictment.

Your comments….. could be a long wait.

      • Pastor Syl says:

Tried to stay out, but have to put in my two cents, LaVerne.
        1) I called for Dr. Brown to be impeached, but I never wanted Ms. Cox as premier because, as Finance Minister, she was the one person who had the power to stop the excesses. Not only did she not stop him, she abdicated all responsibility with her “cog in the wheel” remark.
        2) “most wealthiest”?? and you a journalist? It is either ‘wealthiest’ or ‘most wealthy.’

  33. Ron De Corner says:

Be for real: LV started it be chiming in in her oh so charming fashion. She asks for all she gets.

  34. cygnet says:

    Leah Scott. Really!!!!

  35. Jack Jumping says:

SEE ONCE AGAIN OBA FOLLOWERS,YOU HAVE MISSED HE REAL MESSAGE. THIS IS THE SAME MESSAGE YOU MISSED IN 1998 AND 2007. HOWEVER, IT IS LIKELY YOU WILL CONTINUE TO MISS IT….THIS CLUELESSNESS SEEMS TO BE THE CHALLENGE FOR THE OBA AND UBP. SHOULD I want to swing my vote if I see no change within the OBA or UBP?

    • Wise Mind says:

This is what we get when we have a typical top-down approach to politics. The OBA know no other way. New candidates MUST read from the script handed to them. thats one of the key differences between the two parties, the PLP, inspite of its shortcomings, is grassroots/bottom-up, while the OBA, are clearly TOP-down. i remember when the OBA was “formed”, and having looked at their constitution, there is NOTHING that seperates them from the UBP. AS an example, the candidate selection process for both party’s speaks to their approach. The PLP’s process in some instances became chaotic (Burt vs Butterfield), but thats what happens when you take a grassroots, democratic approach. On the other hand, the OBA’s approach can only be understood by those in the room making the decisions (5-10 people). No transparency, no public(or even OBA members involvement in the selection process). Thats why many thinking persons, especially swing voters, cannot warm-up to the OBA. They dont practice what they preach. We will vote for the PLP, despite their multiple mistakes, as we cannot trust people who are still practicing ‘political sorcery”. Plus, their leader has not spoken in the House since he was elected. why the silance? it leads me to believe what what many suspect, that Craig is mearly a tool too be used to garner the “black swing vote”, and will then be discarded when his handlers have no more use for him. its a shame, because the next generation in particular, deserve better.

      • Tired of nonsense says:

“because the next generation in particular, deserve better”

And yet you will vote for a Party that is limiting the future for the next generation in economic, social and job opportunities terms. Strange that…

Also, I bet you had no problem voting for the PLP in the past despite their “undemocratic” candidate selection as they only implemented their so called “grass roots” approach within the last 6 months or so. And how democratic was it for Col. Burch to be selected for the constituency he was voted in for by the Central Committee after failing to receive the nomination in his original constituency?

The Opposition simply does not have the established political mechanisms as the PLP does at this point in time.

But hey continue bleating on about being so called “swing voters” and criticize solely the Opposition.

        You guys are see through…

        • Wise Mind says:

@ tired of the nonsence, spoken from the mouth of the arrogant and ignorant. you just dont get it dont you? We are critical of the PLP, but you would not notice this i guess. And to say that the “opposition doesent have the political mechanism in place is a half-truth. remenber the OBA was the UBP. the machinery never changed, its just that now, they actually have to go out and connect with people they have no desire to connect with. Afterall, when you have a bloc vote that they have been used too, and dont have to go amongst the people, it leaves them in this position. Dont blame the PLP, look in the mirror and ask yourself why?

          • Tired of nonsense says:

“spoken from the mouth of the arrogant and ignorant”

            Ditto…

      • YOUNG OBA MEMBER says:

@ Wise Man “New candidates MUST read from the script handed to them” – NOT TRUE

        Please state facts.

      • star man says:

“the PLP, inspite of its shortcomings, is grassroots/bottom-up …” Are you KIDDING??!! The PLP/BIU Party is run like a dictatorship by the same old haters on the Central Committee who have been sticking it to their own people for 14 long years.

Time to get honest. Time to get real. Time for a change.

      • media says:

Don’t give the PLP too much credit. They to are reading from a prepared script. And don’t as a reporter ask an inquiring question. It will be rebuked. Politics is a dirty business whichever way you look at it.

  36. media says:

Overall one of the stronger new candidates announced by the OBA. I hope the fact that she is not a born Bermudian will not be used against her. I know historically it has been seen as a negative as far as being in Parliament here. One example is of Kim Young, who had to endure rude and condescending remarks from the other side. I wish Leah Scott well.

    • Rockfish #2 says:

      @ media,
Just wondering–where was Walter Roban born?

  37. Trident says:

I hope that the non cyber bullies here realize that the barrage of anti govt hared that is spewed here all day every day is not organic, it is a mostly conscious effort by the same mostly ex pat angry hateful group who post on bermudaisanotherworld. They have an agreement with each other to troll bermuda’s blogs and post as many hateful things as they can. Many of them don’t live here and cant vote and have a problem with this govt. mostly based on old racist ideals. It is why they can easily shift their anger from jennifer smith, to alex scot, to brown to cox. no matter who or how well the govt. is doing they will attack. for every one pro govt. post, you will see 10 angry responses. It is very coordinated and destructive. One common retort that speaks volumes is that “bda has been horrible since 1998″ meaning that even before the PLP had a chance to put any policies into place they were seething, you see it has nothing to do with governance. If you remember, going back to jennifer there have been accusations of corruption but nothing proven legally. When it comes to financial and govt.corruption even someone as powerful as the US president will be found out (see clinton, nixon) the reason why nothing is ever proven here is that there is nothing. Political power cannot be won by old bermuda anymore so they will cry corruption and smear, that is all they can do. It is something that actually predates party politics. Remember how cathartic it was when the UBP was voted out, if the OBA gets voted in it will be the UBP all over again.

    • LOL (original TM*) says:

Just more scare mongering from PR machines move along nothing to see here…….LOL

LOL scary thing is these PR machines actually think that what they are typing is true. Talk about paranoia. Shall we just record your responce and play it till the election?

    • star man says:

You are TOO funny, Trident. Grasping at threads, are we…?! Let the UBP RIP. Ewart’s PLP/BIU Party is history.

  38. Questioning Everything says:

    Just a couple of questions:

    1) Does “Old Bermuda” mean white and light? Or does that mean when Blacks worked together to build better futures? Or when teachers actually cared? Or when we actually had money to run the country? Or when people cared enough about their families, neighbors and communities to play an active an positive role?

    2) Are adults arguing for the sake of wanting to say something on this site?

    3) Is everbody being adversely affected by this Government, and if so would an entire change in Government bring about the reform that the people are calling for? Is there a room for a collaborative effort on both sides for the betterment of Bermuda?

    4) Is not having the absolute best person for the job, in the job a sign of good governance? Can we honestly say that this Government has practiced this over the last 13 years?

    5) Are the people demonising Paula Cox, or have the results or lack thereof of her leadership called her abilities into question?

6)What has has the OBA really said about it’s plans going forward? Will Craig be an effective and efficient leader?

    7) Will this election be based on FACTS or DREAMS for the future?

    8) How much debt will the current under 30′s have to be discussing about paying back because of this Government? How much will taxes rise in the near future? Can I afford to have kids and a life in Bermuda?

    9) Will Bermuda College ever be an affordable 4-year institution so that our kids can be educated to University level at home, for a reduced rate?

    10) Will the cost of living be addressed? Will controls be put into place for electricty, food, gas etc?

    11) Will there ever be a discussion about the “War on Drug Mules”? Because that’s who are in the prison system.

    12) Will the MOED finally take some advice from the private system about curriculum and implementation? Their results are landslides better so why not use the resources at hand?

Just a few things that are running through this 29 year old head. I need answers before I can even think about where my vote will go.

    • In General says:

I concur with your questions – As a 30 year old – I am wondering are we the only generation that are contemplating these questions when making our decisions. I am hoping those older and younger think this way too…..and the best people are put into the house to ensure that our country is run effeciently, effectively and with longevity in mind.

    • star man says:

Some good questions, but ‘Protectionism’ rarely works because of the ‘Law of Unintended Circumstances.’ You must have a free market for it to be healthy.

    • Pastor Syl says:

@ Questioning Everything: Great questions! and some very pertinent points. Some of the answers are obvious if you look dispassionately at where we are – not demonizing or bashing anyone, just going on the reality of the situation. Some of the people who blog here have their own spin – and that’s folks from all sides. However, there are some things, like the abysmal state of our economy, the real estate situation, and our public education system that allow you to judge for yourself.

As an older adult, I post to this site because I enjoy the discourse, I can ignore or shake my head or choose to respond when someone posts something I consider outrageous, or I can add my voice when I think someone is making sense. I find this medium to be mentally stimulating, although sometimes I despair because what seems so clear to me, some others appear to be blind to.

I pray unceasingly for this country and its people. I wish we all would live in our highest. I wish those at the top would set a better example. I hope the young ones will jump in and make a difference. I’ve gotten a little tired.

  39. Jack Jumping says:

Thanks for educating me @Trident, it is the same group during the UBP’s time. I was not aware this was the same nasty people. I am surprised by this bad behaviours. Sad, I thought things had changed. But looks like little is this true than that the OBA is really the UBP? I do not think I can swing my vote if this is the same situation? Mr. Cannioner I am disappionted what is going on.

    • media says:

You haven’t got much a choice then do you? Vote for the PLP or not at all. I find it absurd in the notion that if the OBA get in they will be exactly like the so called “nasty” UBP were. Are you that naive to believe that? The OBA is not burdened by the past nearly as much as the PLP are. They are starting afresh and welcome to new ideas. If you are happy with how the PLP have handled things vote for them, but most people I speak to of all types are not happy and it is going to play out very interestingly at the election. The swing needed is only 5 %. The Paula Cox knows that does not equate to a lot of people and are hesitant to call the election because of a lack of confidence in winning.

  40. Pastor Syl says:

Ms. Scott, I wish you the best. I admire your courage. Stick to your principles. Don’t let the naysayers and the pot-shotters get you down. Be sure to have a strong support system. As you can see from this thread, you will need it. Remember – there are none so blind as those who will not see. Also – denial is not a river in Egypt, it is alive and well here on this island. If it helps, also remember that denial is not lies, it is the brain’s way of dealing with facts that are too painful to face.

  41. K. Gibbons says:

Really, Laverne, I’m surprised you fell for that myth about the Gibbons family being “the most wealthiest family” in Bermuda. But, of course, you’re just perpetuating it for your own transparent political reasons. But to allege that they’re involved in corruption, cronyism and cover-ups? Haven’t you been knocking yourself out in this thread about proving “allegations”? So where’s the proof? Where’s the evidence? (Hint: you’ll never find it because there isn’t any.)

Anyway, let’s forget about your trite diversion and congratulate Leah Scott, a great new candidate and breath of fresh air, for stepping up and running in #30. She’s well qualified, well spoken and committed to putting Bermuda first.

  42. media says:

It’s not a myth, at least one of the wealthiest, unless you want to get technical. Why be ashamed of it. I admire the Gibbons family. They are a great example of working very hard and what can be achieved – through multiple generations. And counter to what people generally think, their success does not go back hundreds of years, maybe just 70 or so. They are an upstanding family, no matter what some might say.

  43. Cancer says:

@jumping jack…. Why when everytime you make a post your always have to start with “as a swing voter” then you end up bashing the OBA? You think people cant see thru this? You ain’t no swing voter – your scrictly flip flop PLP and you know it!

  44. media says:

    Well called Cancer…

  45. Specialgirl4you says:

Well put @ Wise One…….
