23-Year-Old Man Injured In Shooting
[Updated with video] At approximately 2am this morning [Feb.29] police had a strong presence in the North Shore and Bandroom Lane areas after what we unofficially understand was a shooting which saw one man injured.
Unofficial reports from area residents suggest that a social gathering may have been happening in the vicinity at the time of the shooting, and that approximately four gunshots were heard.
Police have blocked off parts of both North Shore, Bandroom Lane and a small section of Mission Lane, and are presently examining the area. We have limited details at this time, but will update as able.
Update 2.50am: There is a police presence outside the hospital, a normal occurrence when a shooting victim is brought in. The Police Forensic Unit continues to examine the crime scene.
Update 3.56am: Police confirm that a 23-year-old man was shot at around 1am, and said his injuries are not believed to be life threatening.
Update 4.48am: The police issued an official statement which follows in full below:
Around 1am on Wednesday, February 29th police responded to reports of gunshots in the North Shore Road, Bandroom Lane Pembroke area.
A 23 year old man has been shot and injured as a result; however his injuries do not appear to be life threatening.
Police are appealing for any witnesses or anyone with any information to contact the main police number 295-0011 or the independent & confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.
Update 5.45am: North Shore Road has re-opened to traffic, and the area is now quiet with no visible sign of police presence or activity in the North Shore, Bandroom Lane or Mission Lane area.
Firearm incidents so far in 2012 include: a man brandishing a gun in the area outside the Hamilton Police Station on February 23, shots fired in St. Monica’s Road on February 12, shots fired on Mount Hill followed by a police chase to the west on January 25, and a shooting on Glebe Road which injured one man and claimed the life of 24-year-old Stefan Burgess on January 8.

Dark visors should be banned, as a bike rider I know they are handed when dealing with sunny weather, but if it helps with identifying these scum bags then I’m for banning them.

This subject is so f’in retarded, and anybody who entertains it and thinks for one second that this will deter these guys from using them needs a serious reality check!
Stick a $50000 or prison time the law & it will deter these guys or put them where they belong. Thats if BPS enforce the law just as much as they walk around doing jack all. People still drive around with no seat belts, going pass the speed limit, reckless driving, talking on mobiles, overtaking on blind corners etc. ect. This is not because people won’t adhere to the law its because it isn’t enforced. So, craig says we need to pay the police more well to hell with what craig says because the police don’t do what they’re paid for already.

They wont ban visors though. They are more concerned with raising duty at the airport, raising price of water, raising this, raising that.

Hey clown as someone who wears glasses and has a tinted bike visor. Visor costs $40, prescription sun glasses between $300 to $500. Which would you buy if you wore glasses and rode?

I wear glasses and have bought prescription sunglasses. Also, there are clips that you can put on your regular glasses that are inexpensive (compared to a new pair of glasses) and actually look good. Or- there are glasses with the lenses that tint when you are out in the sun and revert when you return indoors.
They are not banned, so deal with it and accept it.
Should the police tell you to deal with it and accept it if you get mugged? Besides what are the police to do if they can’t catch a perpetrator because you don’t see their face?
“Dark visors should be banned”……so when they start using scarfs/bandannas to conceal their identity are we going to sak that they be banned also????? The innocent should not have to suffer for the guilty..

Security wouldn’t matter if people were still allowed to walk in a bank with helmets on. If helmets were still allowed what would security be able to do if three crooks walked in a bank at separate times with helmets on to not look obvious. I’m sure one would be able to cover the security guards especially with a gun. The others would be able to get as much on hand cash as possible. No one would be able to identify any of them. At present if even one person forgets to take their helmet off security can & do come out quickly & ask them to remove it.
You can easily conceal a gun then pull it out quickly & use it. Its more challenging to conceal a visor & then pull it out pop it on then try to catch up with your target. Deterrents are not perfect but put enough in the way & criminals slip up.
Uh NO you pull them over, confiscate them/tell them to remove them and fine them heavily just like the ipod/cell phone law. Anything that conceals your face should be illegal along with the dark visors, they don’t need limousine tint on their helmets.
Re banning Visors –
I think 315G “Power to deal with items obscuring or concealing identity” already gives police the right to stop, and if the situation calls for it, remove anything obscuring or concealing identity if it is deamed to be for that purpose.
This pertains to anything concealing identity, scarfs in 2000, visors in 2010-12, who knows what in the future… there will always be something to conceal, this is another extremely broad reaching stop an search law.

Let’s not think in absolutes. Banning visors isn’t the complete answer but it could be one tool to assist in stopping the shooters.

Banning visors isn’t going to stop anything from happening. If visors are banned these guys will just use masks or scarfs to conceal their identity, come on people.

how about we ban bikes that go over 40kph? or ban them all together and have golf carts, also limit cars to how fast they travel as there really is no need to get anywhere fast on this small island…then perhaps they can catch these guys!
ya banning visors wont solve the whole problem but it will show and give the lil island some security on there surroundings if banned visors was forced and ppl where given a month or 2 to sort there self out after the deadline you do what you think is right simple as that.. so after the deadline if i or anyone on the island drives,walks, or sees a dark visor in the area they will be aware of anything that might b happening its your choice if you want to sit around and see if something will happen or it gives you the chance from being in the wrong place at the wrong time after the LAW is in place the police will have EVERY RIGHT to stop n search someone who is hiding their identity so if the police and gov. was really serious and tryna get a handle on this a 7 year old could see that putn this LAW in place will help and benefit future works to this big long term problem in this lil island

To a certain extent yes…BUT IF THEIR FACES ARE CONCEALED WITH BANDANNAS/SCARFS YOU STILL WONT BE ABLE TO IDENTIFY THEM….and while it may SEEM a viable LAW it still is a band aid fix..this will not help the problem go away…

Good point! I just jumped in because I saw the visor law comments which I strongly believe would help in cases of those mugged by guys on motor bikes. As for the topic of shootings a visor law won’t do much for this since it is more of a planned assault on certain individuals. The only thing that will help this is 24 hour police presence in the high risk areas though this again is only one piece to a puzzle.
These bike shops don’t wanna loose any money. So they’ll probably still sell these visors even if the law was to change. It’s a lose lose situation.
Thats because they know the law is lax here when it comes to profit makers. It’s just the same as bars selling to underaged kids it happens but isn’t justifiable just selfish greed.
While we advocate the need to ban dark visors, why don’t we lump dark motorcycles, or any motorcycles for that matter, dark clothing ect. I almost included firearms then it dawned on me they’re already banned !!! How can people be so ridiculous to think the solution lies in banning visors smh.

It does not matter what we ban. If someone wants to commit a crime that person will find a way. We have laws on the books, why not enforce them? Or could it be that we have already abandoned the laws? Wake up Bermuda before we all have to Ban our bellies and bawl.
The point of making them illegal is that if someone is seen by police wering one after the ban then they can legally stop them and at the least make some enquiries that may lea to thek saving of someones life. The offender will have to give acct for himself and the visor can be confiscated.
I think we need to ban visors it is not comfortable driving day and night and a person on a bike comes up behind you with a black visor.

There should be a no nonsense approach to guns.
Anyone found with a fire arm in their possession, found during a search,automatic minimum 10 year sentence. No questions asked.
Anyone caught committing a crime with a gun,10 years added on top of the sentence for the crime.
This will make people think twice, before getting involved with fire arms.
