Bermuda Swimmers Compete In Indianapolis

March 30, 2012

Bermuda has three of our best swimmers in attendance at the Indianapolis Grand Prix — one of the fastest meets of the year in swimming and an event which draws a field of the biggest names in the sport.

Lisa Blackburn is swimming the 100 and 200 breast, Roy-Allan Burch is swimming the 50 and 100 free and Julian Fletcher is swimming the 100 breast.

The meet is being held at the facility at the IUPUI campus in Indianapolis.

Ben Smith reports today [Mar. 30] that the Bermuda swimmers are competing in the the top flight at the prestigious meet.

“Roy was first up in the 100 free as he continues to try to add this event to his Olympic qualifier,” said Mr. Smith. “He had a strong swim finishing with a 51.91. It was not quite fast enough to make it back for the finals but it was still a good swim for learning.

“Next up was Lisa in the 200 breast where she had recently set the Bermuda record at the Grand Prix in Columbus. She meant business right from the start with a very strong stroke and great turns. She dropped four seconds from her National record while winning her heat. She will get another shot at it tonight in one of the finals where she hopes to lower her time again.”

“I feel very strong and the training has definitely prepared me well for this meet,” Ms Blackburn told Mr. Smith.

Tomorrow morning Roy-Allan Burch will be up again in the 50 free where he hopes to lower his time again.

Bermuda’s swimmers will finish the meet on Saturday with Lisa Blackburn and Julian Fletcher up in their main event 100 breast. Both will be looking for their qualifying times.

Continuing the busy weekend Kiera Aitken will be in Spain looking to hit her time at Spanish Nationals.
