OBA Rollout Nadia Hamza In C#35

March 14, 2012

[Updated with videos] Attorney Nadia Hamza will stand for the Opposition in Constituency #35 Sandys North Central, the One Bermuda Alliance announced this afternoon [Mar.14].

Ms Hamza with Opposition Leader Craig Cannonier:

Sandys North Central is presently held by the PLP’s Dennis Lister who won 66.43% of the vote vs the UBP’s Donald Hassell [556-281] in 2007. Although the PLP has not officially confirmed him as a candidate yet, Mr Lister was selected in a candidate selection meeting in September 2011.

Born in England while her father was studying abroad, Ms Hamza returned as a very young child with her family to live in her mother’s birthplace of Bermuda, after spending some time living in her father’s birthplace in North Africa.

Left to right, OBA Candidates Alexis Swan, Nandi Davis, Nadia Hamza, Jeanne Atherden:

She was educated at Bermuda High School for Girls before being sent to the U.K. to complete her secondary education at a boarding school. Later, she pursued her undergraduate studies at University College London [French, BA Honours] and then achieved her LLB [Bachelor in Legal Studies] as an accelerated postgraduate degree at City University, London.

Mr Cannonier and Ms Hamza speaking after the press conference:

Her professional studies were completed at the College of Law, Chester, but not before returning home to Bermuda in 1998 for a period of four years during which she worked hard to save enough money to complete her professional studies.

Mr Cannonier and Ms Hamza’s statements:

Since then, Ms Hamza worked for two of the top law firms, in Bermuda: namely, Mello Jones & Martin and Conyers Dill & Pearman. She started her own law practice in late 2010 and opened a Hamilton office on 1st June, 2011.

Ms Hamza’s full statement follows below:

Good afternoon all,

My name is Nadia Hamza and I am very honoured to have been selected to represent the One Bermuda Alliance in the next general election and to represent the interests and concerns of the people of Sandys North Central.

As a child, I grew up in the neighborhoods of Laurel Lane and West Side Road. It is for this reason that I am particularly delighted to be able to come back home and give back to the very community who were responsible for nurturing me in my younger years.

I have very fond memories of growing up in Sandys: of using the Gladys Morrell Nature Reserve, at the back of my grandmother’s home, as a playground; of visiting my grandmother at Somerset Primary when she was the principal there, and of going to what used to be Springfield library to get my weekly ration of books to read.

Up until recently, I have always regarded myself as largely apolitical. However, at this point in Bermuda’s history, I feel I can no longer stand on the sidelines. I cannot, in good conscience, stand by and do nothing: doing nothing is not an option when Bermuda is in such real crisis on every level.

In my quest to see what I can do to help Bermuda move forward, I have chosen to support the one team that is committed to restoring the public’s faith in good governance; the one team that is truly committed to the key principles of opportunity, responsibility, integrity, transparency, fairness, inclusiveness and service. That team is the One Bermuda Alliance.

As your representative, I will understand, listen, connect and clearly speak on your behalf. I am committed not only to raising awareness of the issues that Sandys is experiencing, but also to start working with you now, before the election, to get the ball rolling on much-needed change.

Recently, I attended the Economic Forum held at Sandys 360 and heard your concerns from from crime to small business challenges, and the hopes for an economic revival in the west end.

Further, when I visited Lefroy House with my fellow candidate Ray Charlton, I became painfully aware of how many good people are trying to do their best to care for the residents but who are hobbled by a system that is not serving them.

The least we can do for our seniors is to accord them respect and dignity they merit and the care they deserve. They have paid their whole lives into a system which is now failing them.

It is not acceptable to allocate funds to them only to take them back, without explanation, without apology, and to leave those who are trying to do their best to help them woefully under supported.

It is a lie for this government to say that it cares about its seniors when it shows them so little respect or compassion.

George Orwell said: “In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.”

It is time now for all of us to get in touch with our inner revolutionary. Let us be truthful firstly with ourselves. Let us be truthful and openly acknowledge that what has been done to date has not worked and has truly put Bermuda in the hole, both socially and economically. Most importantly, let us be truthful about how much we are personally willing to commit to get Bermuda back to where our island needs to be.

I am committed to working with the people of Sandys North Central. I understand only too well how overwhelming daily life has become for so many of us. It is time for us to say to each other that you are not alone, you are being listened to, you are understood and we can do this. There might be a long road ahead of us, but there is absolutely no need for it to be a lonely one. Let us work together to get the Bermuda we know and love back on track.

    Looks like a good choice.

    LOL

    • jack says:

looks like the oba has hard time finding young man to run

      • openmind says:

and what difference does it make whether the candidate is male or female?

      • Walla Walla says:

Isn’t our country or government under the PLP led by a woman? Whats your point jack!

  2. Jus' Askin' says:

C#35 is PLP’s and OBA knows that ;-)

    • Rummy says:

      What an assinine comment.

      Bermuda is “PLP’s” ?

Was. They have an undertaker looming.

OBA will bring fresh blood and needed supplies.

      • Jus' Askin' says:

OBA – Ol’ Blood Alliance ;-)

        • Have a Cold One says:

I guess you won’t mind similar acronyms about PLP
          PLP =Politicians Lining Pockets
          PLP= Politicians Love Partying
          PLP= Politicians Lying to People

          • J says:

Come on. You both sound like spoiled children rather than two adults (I’m assuming adults wrote these posts) who care about our future.

          • Pre Madonna says:

            PLP – Please Leave Parliament

            • Just One says:

Best of luck to Nadia and all the candidates. This is not a game, this is serious business.

  3. Cancer says:

Congratulations to you Ms Hamza. The Lister’s times are up! The people are tired! Win this one on the doorstep.

    • .hmmmm says:

White black white black white black white black.

      • Tommy Chong says:

So which colour peg are you placing Nadia Hamza under?

How about Craig? Does he get two different pegs?

        • Wandering says:

@ Tommy – we are all one people – check your lineage and you will be surprised what packages you unwrap. As long as the candidates who are elected from either party do the job and do it according to the deep desires of their electorate, who cares the color of their hair, eyes, nails, shoes, tie, skirt, slip or bottom of their feet…. It is all about representing the people to the best of their ability and being visible in the community year round – assisting, visiting, listening, supporting and encouraging, being active/involved in the community year round. Having the your heart for their community – that is a dedicated, concerned, loyal, honest, proud, amazing candidate – not somebody who comes around once in awhile, hears you but doesn’t listen – blink and they are gone.

          • Tommy Chong says:

Your point is the exact same point to the poster .hmmmm who seems to be noting their perceived colours of the oba members & the order they are elected in. Like you typed we are all one people & I’m tired of people pegging others under a colour label. People don’t realize these labels are racist both ways. They need to just compare the definitions of these labels & realize if they have some sense that they are false.

Black definition: lacking hue and brightness; absorbing light without reflecting any of the rays composing it. characterized by absence of light; enveloped in darkness: a black night. soiled or stained with dirt: That shirt was black within an hour. gloomy; pessimistic; dismal: a black outlook.

White definition: of the color of pure snow, of the margins of this page, etc.; reflecting nearly all the rays of sunlight or a similar light. light or comparatively light in color.

We don’t go around calling Native Americans red people anymore or asians yellow people so why do we still separate humans of even one drop of African decent with humans of european decent. What is the point of having a white, black & other checkbox on almost every government fill out form. Where is the check box that says human because that would be the only factual one that all would fall under.

            • Tommy Chong says:

Meant to type Your point is the exact same as my point is to the poster .hmmmm

I was not trying to parallel Wandering with .hmmmm I just clicked submit to quickly before checking for errors.

          • Hope this helps says:

            @ Wandering

“who cares the color of their hair, eyes, nails, shoes, tie, skirt, slip or bottom of their feet”

The OBA cares that”s why they changed the name of the white UBP party to OBA.

Where have you been for the last 5 months? It’s a race thing on both parties. The only thing different is the OBA/UBP needs 20% of blacks to help them win for their own cause! That’s why they changed the name and that’s why they are not pushing to many white faces to the fore front. Take the leader for example #1. Grant Gibbons has been around all his life but really you think he would get more votes then a new guy like Craig? My friend told me right up front if they had a white leader he would not vote OBA. The OBA is smart enough to know this and more.

Now we are all on the same page lets get on with the election to see if these faces you running at the front help win the next election. I say NO!!

            • Pastor Syl says:

This whole “OBA is the new UBP” stuff is really tired! I guess people keep repeating it because they want to convince that segment of the population who fell for the “back to the plantation” propaganda that a vote for the OBA will be the same as a vote for the UBP. They refuse to acknowledge that there are people who joined the OBA who would never have joined the UBP. They also downplay how many new PLP members are ex-UBP.

              • Pastor Syl says:

Sorry, Ms. Hamza! Forgot to say Congratulations and best wishes for your success. As others will tell you, stay strong and stay focused. I applaud your courage in stepping forward at this time of crisis

  4. Really?? says:

Good Luck Mrs. Hazma. Welcome aboard, i know you can do a better job…

  5. J Starling says:

I think Ms. Hamza is an excellent candidate and would like to see her in parliament – I think she has a lot to offer. Having said that, running against Mr. Lister is going to be tough; I hope that is she is unsuccessful that she then becomes a Senator.

    • Rummy says:

      Oh you Communist!

Senators don’t make up the Government.

If the PLP win most seats she is good enough to sit back just because you think she is a good choice.

Go the hell back to Moscow.

    • Voice of Reason says:

      J Starling,

Would you agree with this statement below which was spoken by the person you’d like to see in parliament?

“It is a lie for this government to say that it cares about its seniors when it shows them so little respect or compassion.”

      • J Starling says:

Hi VoR – I have not looked at the particular plight of our seniors or what the Government is or isn’t doing to help them. So I cannot comment on this particular aspect of Ms. Hamza’s speech.

My thoughts on Ms. Hamza are that I think she brings an excellent skill-set and mind to the table, and I think she would be an asset for our parliament. My perception as such is not determined by every utterance of candidates – I may disagree strongly with some and agree with others.

        • Come correct says:

I have to agree, its about DAMN time somebody rolled out a candidate of her caliber. SHE’S worked for two top law firms, I have no doubt she will bring a number of FINE assets to the table.

        • Come correct says:

I’D have to say this will be a big HIT to the plp, I don’t care what any loyalists say, and that’s THAT!

          • come again? says:

aren’t we CLEVER #Come correct. I suspect, however, she’s more interested in your vote.

            • Come correct says:

Well I don’t live in sommerset and I’m more interested in the fact she’s not wearing a wedding ring…

  6. Nicole says:

Brilliant to hear this news today. Nadia is one of the most dedicated, hard-working, selfless people I know. She is passionate, strong and has enough of a tough skin to make a difference for Bermuda’s residents. Best of luck Nads – it won’t be easy, but you never did like things delivered to you!

  7. omar little says:

    homina homina homina

  8. Face The Facts says:

If she is up against PLP’s Dennis Lister i want u to really tell me her Odds of beating Dennis Lister. If you don’t know well I’m gonna tell you now! They are very very slim and this is why, “The whole of Somerset knows the Listers” and more specifically “Dennis” so if you want any chance of winning even though you lived in Somerset you need to not just knock on doors but bang on them because nobody up here (in Somerset) knows you like that. You definately need to let Somerset people see you in the Somerset Community and NOT just when your canvassing for votes either , that don’t count! Its alright to be optimistic but I’m a realist!

    • Rummy says:

Somerset will be another St. George with comments like that ‘Face the facts’.

      Your isolating everything.

      Jim Jones….remember him?

Probaley not but there is correlation in your commnts.

      • Have a Cold One says:

Jim Jones…isn’t that the guy that sings in Vegas and sings that song “whats new Pussycat…whoa, whoa , whoa.

  9. Hmmmmm says:

Maiden political speech and starts with calling people liars? Save that for your rally when the “red meat” is required. This is what the OBA doesn’t get….hate and negativity don’t overturn majorities. Ideas do.

    • Rummy says:

Wow. Thats some strong words there Hmmmmmmmm.
Your problem is your still on the first page of the Hymual.

      “Don’t overturn majorities”.

Damn right. We had to deceive you, and all the othere lies.

      “Ideas”.
      Bwahahaaaaaaaa.

Here is one. I have 150 homes to sell. Paid for. You just have to cover my ass. Call now, the call is free. 1-800-PaulaCockup.

    • omar little says:

could be she is referring to Mrs. O, Lefroy house where they said they spent $19million only to later admit it was a million with the rest moved to “other” accounts, now asking seniors to pay land tax because the Government cannot manage funds….perhaps it was things like that she was referring to….oh I forget Zane lying about the changes to Future Care…thats another one….I’m sure there are more …but that took about 30 seconds to think of…..liars is being kind….

    • Wandering says:

annnnnnnnnnnnnnd what ideas have the PLP turned over lately…. I guess you have not been reading your paper – ohhhhhh, I know, I know “Debt is an investment” You and them need to get your invested selves out to North Rock and fight for the top seat out there – perhaps you and Laverne can feed the fish – better still – keep the foreign fishermen out of our waters – and by the way…. did you hear that is already a law, so tell somebody to cancel the cheque and increase the Senior’s pension with that money. Whole lot need to go, I swear and I try not to..

  10. Optimistic says:

    Congratulations Nadia,

Please concentrate exclusively on the voters in your constinuency and provide them with an extensive list of what makes you different then D.Lister. Try not to get involved in negative rhetoric and the voters there will at least be grateful of your efforts.

It’s refreshing to see new faces and ideas in Bermuda, best of luck to both C#35 candidates.

    • Hmmmmm says:

      Good advice.

    • Voice of Reason says:

Negative Rhetoric like calling people liars……

      • Optimistic says:

I don’t disagree with you ‘voice of reason’. She is perfectly able to use data to support such statements but if you look at every candidate’s roll-out speeches, most of them do not have one mention of percentages(%)!

We all owe her (and other candidates) the ability to make up for small mistakes and prove their worth. Who knows, maybe if you reach out to her privately she’ll elaborate further on her statement(s).

        No need to make enemies…

      • Come correct says:

If you have a “fish”, but deny to the fullest extent that’s its not a fish, does that make it a liama?

    • Union Member says:

Well stated optimistic. I hope that all candidates take this approach. We need to hear solutions and ideas. Questions can anyone answer why our parties don’t hold debates?

  11. Voice of Reason says:

I can’t believe this woman had the gall to call out the PLP for now caring about seniors. When she’s in the same party the criticises the PLP for spending too much on senior’s health care!!!!

The OBA are on both sides of every issue, but that’ll soon wear thin.

  12. BDA says:

YES!!! What wonderful news!!!! Nadia is one tuff cookie and will get things done!!!

    • Rummy says:

      BDA, I don’t want a “tuff cookie”.

      Cookies crumble.

      It’s the ingredients.

  13. Joe Public says:

Does this girl even know where Court Street is or 42nd. Has she even had fish from these places?

    NO!

    • take a break says:

And how they hell do you know…Uhhhh YOU DONT, so cool it with your dumb comments!!!

      • LOL says:

This girl doesn’t not know any thing about your average Joe Blow. Point taken Joe Public.

I heard her speaking on the News, she sounds more like a workpermit holder then a Bermudian. I can see her now talking to my family at the West. The only question that my son would ask for is her phone number to take her to the movies.

        • Walla Walla says:

How sad, it sounds like you have a very narrow minded family that worries more about what someone sounds like or looks like. As a parent I guess you failed to teach them otherwise. What will you do if Paula or Dr. Brown come knocking with your local constituant. They both speak quite eloquently? Or is this really more to do wit the color of her skin?

    • Optimistic says:

She’s running in Sandy’s, not Pembroke

    • Rummy says:

What does Court Street and fish have to do with, you a$#hole.
You talking crime or a dimension in time.

      • Union Member says:

It has everything to do with it…your country is only as strong as your most vunerable citizens. If she doesn’t understand the needs and policies necessary to make these areas successful…then it becomes a festering sore….

    • Nuff said says:

Good day Joe, ( see how easy it is to be nice)

I sit and read the good, the bad and the silly comments it makes me wonder what the heck does it matter where she does or does not eat….

Please be mindfully that you may not speak the same as her BUT You certainly have or have had the same struggles..

We are all the same: strip our outer film off and we all breath the same air:

ASK ya boys bet they know her….. On da strip!

    • Have a Cold One says:

Court Street is the street that PLP has their headquarters. YES? The government that you defend parks their GP cars outside on Court Street every day and they ignore or pretend that they do not notice what happens on that street. I know that we do not want to hear it but drug use, drug sales and prostitution is not uncommon on most days and especially at night only a few yards away from where they meet. Despite this two former TOP COPS of the Bermuda Police Force drive by there and meet at Alaska on a regular basis and ignore what happends. They are either completely incompetent or shoose to ignore what happens on Court Street. Maybe if they didn’t more people in Bermuda would visit there. If they (PLP and the former TOP COPS) IGNORE IT as former crime fighters, why would you expect anyone else to do more or care more. Obviously , you are satisfied with how well the PLP has cleaned up your neighboourhood?! Crime in the last 10 years is down…is it?

      • Hmmm! says:

What’s your point Have a cold one? You expect members of the PLP to step outside their headquarters and look for people looking suspicious and arrest them? There’s a police headquarters on the same street now and I’m sure police are on that street more then any PLP member. So what are the police getting paid for, to look good in uniform? SMH.

        • Walla Walla says:

I think his or her point is that it that YES they are expected to do something or say something, that is why they are the government isn’t it?. Skipper Ingham on his own did much more with far less to help and he was simply a business owner and neighbour. If those crimes happened so openly in my neighbourhood and I was aware of it I would call the police regularly, call my MP’s, the news media, my neighbourhood watch program. Remember, the PLP government includes a former chief of police and regiment colonal. If you are saying that they do not have the ability to change things, then who will? I persomnallu believe Colonel Burch, Mr. Smith(and Perinchief) are quiite capable of cleaning up the guns, drugs and prostituation right outside Alaska Hall and on Court Street. But it is hard to argue with “Have a Cold One”‘s comments. More should be done in that area considering the resources and contacts just those three gentleman in particular have available to them. If nothing changes in that area, meaning right outside of the PLP HEADQUARTERS FRONT DOOR then we can expect that NOTHING WILL CHANGE ANYWHERE.

    • DONK says:

obviously u don’t know the hamzas

    • Wandering says:

Why don’t you take her on a tour and for lunch…. but find out first if she has been there and if you haven’t been to her side of the woods – meet her half way and both of you learn together……

have you had fish from St. George’s, St. David’s, Bailey’s Bay, Flatts, and all after that???? if not, the bridge is always open…

  14. strugglin' onion says:

Congrats Nadia for going to the wicket . . . Somerset needs you!!!

  15. What about the People says:

Oh jesus, where did they find the chick with the english accent?!?!

    • jt says:

Better than the fake ones some try to roll off their pompous tongues – hysterical to listen to.

    • Fed Up Bermudian says:

WAY better than ‘aksing’ for your votes. Or, if they want to sound posh, ‘oxing’ for your votes. Sorry, but that’s not dialect, that’s just dumb. Because this woman can speak clearly and happens to have a British accent shouldn’t be a cause for concern, folks. She’s Bermudian, read about her. And she’s a dedicated one, too. Willing to do for her home. More than most can say, I think. So give the ‘chick with the english accent’ a break, she might have something valuable to offer.

    • JCS says:

I find it odd that Nadia is being taken to task because of her British accent. Many Bermudians have gone to Britain for schooling and returned with a British accent, as have some who went to the U.S. and returned with an American accent. Did Ewart Brown have a Bermudian accent? I don’t think he did but it seems that to some of you a British accent is worse than an American one, which I can’t fathom. It also perplexes me that Nadia’s speech is being critisized when she speaks so well, yet no mention is ever made of the mish mash of the English language that comes out of Marc Bean’s mouth!

      • Mountbatten says:

Marc Bean is a wise fool whose language and conversation is very heavy on the double negatives .

  16. The Hell!! says:

Why do we have lawyers, doctors and accountants etc. Running our country that is part of the problem those type of people are so far out of touch with the common citizen. Their picking people who are in their own click. If you catch my drift.

    • Pre Madonna says:

Total Bull! We need people who are business savvy to help run this country – not the bunch of arrogant ignorant unqualified fools we have up there now. Nadia would be a good addition to Parliament. The reason we are in such an awful position today is that PLP took charge and they have no brain between them – absolutely no ability to run a country. People of your own ‘click’ have ruined this country through incompetence and self interest – in addition to unethical but apparently not illegal actions. ‘We had to deceive you’ will go down in history when describing this time in history when the PLP almost completely finished our country off. Go Nadia!!! Out Lister!!!

    • Tired of nonsense says:

Paula Cox is a lawyer ad Dr. Brown is a doctor…

Oh now I catch your drift and i agree

  17. LaVerne Furbert says:

I don’t know Nadia, but I am familiar with her family background and I am quite familiar with her grandmother, the former principal of Somerset Primary School.

I find it most interesting that Ms. Hamza has fond memories of visiting her grandmother at Somerset Primary School “when she was the principal there” but she was never a student there herself, in spite of the fact that Somerset Primary was a “white school” back in the day. But if my memory serves me correctly, by the time Ms. Hamza was old enough to attend primary school, Somerset Primary was accepting black students, so I guess that is why she only visited her grandmother at Somerset Primary.

Now, if we want to accept that the OBA is a “new” party and has no connection with the United Bermuda Party, in spite of the fact that every United Bermuda Party Member of Parliament with the exception of Kim and Charlie Swan, are now members of the OBA, we can forgive her for her criticism of Lefroy House. However, let us not forget that many of the Senior homez that operated under the UBP prior to 1998, including Pembroke Rest Home, Devonshire Rest and Sandy’s Rest Home, were closed down after 1998 because of their poor state of repair. I know that Ms. Hamza is too young to know the condition of Lefroy House prior to 1998, and her fellow candidate, Ray Charlton, has only become concerned since he has become a candidate for the OBA, but I can assure readers that Lefroy House is now a five star facility compared to how it was under the UBP.

Finally, I think it’s time for the OBA to find their own slogan and stop using the PLP’s slogan of 2007 “Moving Bermuda Forward”.

    • jt says:

LF – race, race, race. Fact is Ms. Hanza can run circles around you in every fashion. Perhaps that is why you were deemed inappropriate to run for election.

      • Carse Yer Wote says:

LV: Your daily rantings have become meaningless. A mere amusement. Ineffective at best. A joke. You have finally found yourself – you have become the court jester. The fool.

    • Face the Nation says:

Lavern , do you think those 7 votes you got were racially or intelligently motivated . The eighth vote was self inflicted.

    • OvEr says:

This post stinks of desperation, and for good reason. The OBA has a very strong team which is getting stronger by the day.

      • Understanding says:

        You aren’t serious are you?

        • OvEr says:

Compare the PLP to the OBA. There’s no comparison. The PLP continues to show incompetence (just read the daily new on any given day) while the OBA rolls out bright young candidates. The OBA definitely has my vote in the coming election.

    • Have a Cold One says:

My wife is a teacher in a private Bermuda school and my children do not attend school. Although it is an excellent school we do not feel it is a good idea to have our children attend school at the same school that my wife teaches at. Just our personal choice…not saying that those that choose to have their kids educated at the same school are doing anything wrong, its just not the right choice for us. So why do you find in interesteing that she didnt attend school where her grandmother was principal. To begin with did she even live in the area as Somerset Primary. Furgermore, have you made the same criticism of the PLP members and past and present PLP government ministers who are teachers and PRINCIPLES that have children and family that did not attend the sameschools that they did. Do all of Dame Jennifers Smiths family members all attend public schools in Bermuda. Did all of Dale Bulters children and family attend the schools at the same schools he taught at. I doubt it. I could go on and on. Why is everything with you black and white. Why don’t you spend more time on BIU accounts and less time defending and blogging and maybe they wouldnt be 10 years behind with your accounting!

      • Have a Cold One says:

Apologies for the bad grammar and spelling ..I hate typing on an Ipad. LOL

    • Sandman says:

Accusing a opposition candidate of racism and segregationism when they were a six-year old child: – that’s really scraping the bottom of the barrel, Laverne.

What’s next? “when she was in the womb, she didn’t want a black nurse to do the ultrasound”

      • Shaking the Head says:

It’s rather boring to be constantly reminded by LaVerne, and the likes of SG4u, that their backward views and opinions, and which apparently carry through to many in the power structure of the PLP, are one of the main reasons Bermuda is being taken back to the bad old days.

    • Real Talk (original) says:

      Come on Ms Furbert,

You can do better than that… How very PLP-ish of you to think that Ms Hamza should have attended Somerset Primary simply because her grandmother was the principal. Heaven forbid her parents decided to place their child in the school of their choosing.

    • Fed Up Bermudian says:

And again- the rhetoric of ‘the UBP didn’t do anything to help/were racists/were corrupt makes it all better??? Are you senile or on acid or what? Nothing in our past justifies what these seniors are living right now, regardless of who’s responsible. How about taking real measures to MAKE IT RIGHT.

    • Nikisha says:

“I can assure readers that Lefroy House is now a five star facility compared to how it was under the UBP”

@ LaVerne – Why on earth would I trust the word of a racist mental patient?

      • J Starling says:

I always find it odd that people are so quick to attack Ms. Furbert for what they perceive as her personal attacks on people by personally attacking her. I mean, you just blow your credibility by doing such.

    • Pastor Syl says:

@ LaVerne: If I read what was said correctly, Ms. Hamza was not talking about whatever upgrades were made to Lefroy House but the lie that was told about the amount that was spent on those upgrades – $19 million earmarked, $1 million spent and the rest diverted elsewhere.

And again: Please don’t reap up yet again what the UBP did or didn’t do. If we wanted more of the same, we wouldn’t have voted them out.

  18. Hey Bye says:

She is educated, we cannot say that, with what is running the island now.

  19. Cancer says:

Can someone tell me why the Lister’s are such a easy win in somerset? Do they even do anything up there? Do they actually put in work as a govt minister? Do they even canvass? Have you seen them at your doorstep? Somerset people have given the Listers a free ride and has just carried them for too long. The area is even referred to as Lister country! Has gun related crime increased or decreased in Lister country? Also the flipflop PLP has not shown seniors respect – seniors complain daily about how they are treated by this flipflop PLP party. Who has a right to deny seniors inexpensive proper health care? There’s only one answer to that… It’s the flipPLoP!!!

    • Mountbatten says:

All Dennis Lister ever does is paste a silly grin on his face and cash the steady check that the people of Somerset freely give him . Time to boot his silly non performing carcass out . It is time for a visionary to take over .

    • Luv u Nadia ...but .. says:

Nadia = Well educated , well spoken , highly motivated , driven ,passionate , will represent everyone in the constituency well regardless of who they might or might not vote for.

Since the passing of Flip Galloway all of Somerset has been PLP territory even though Nadia could be their next Flip.

To answer your question , and to steal words from another poster , the PLP could run turds up there , and they’d still be elected .

  20. k says:

just a correction, somerset primary wasnt a ‘white school’ neither was sandys grammar before it !!!!!

    • K is in Denial says:

Ah K….time to do some Bermuda history…that’s why we have schools so close to each other, Somerset Primary/West End, Paget Primary/Gilbert, East End/St Georges Prep. Schools were segregated in Bermuda. Think about it St. Georges, Paget and Somerset where not that densly populated for the need of 2 schools back then lol!

  21. Triangle Drifter says:

Why do the PLP faithful have to try to make every topic, every event, anything political racial.

    You people are pityful.

If the voters can get past race & vote for a candidate based on real issues instead of emotion & ‘just because’ Bermuda just might have a chance of getting itself out of the PLP created abyss.

    • Pre Madonna says:

The PLP knows no other way. They have to turn everything into race. Its all they got.

      PLP = Pathetic Lying Pussies.

  22. Cancer says:

Oh Laverne – I thought the PLP slogan was “moving Bermuda backward” – sorry I was only going by just looking around at how things are!

PS you sure are stuck on this black and white thing!! Like who cares anymore?

  23. Hmmmmm says:

Mayfair accent aside, if she is the quality candidate you all say she is, why is she being wasted up there? Run her in a marginal where she stands a chance. Can’t figure out the OBA strategy. But I have to admit she sounds like the Tory candidate for Cheltenham South……

    • Hmmmm says:

She will do fine. She will work hard. She will achieve and she will benefit Bermuda and Bermudians.

  24. huh says:

I’m confused – I know we r a british colony but she sounds like she has never ever lived here. Somerset folks won’t feel warm to her.

    • Coli says:

I’m sorry you feel that way because of her time spent in the UK – but trust me, having known Nadia since we were kids, she’s got a strong Bermudian heart and she’s passionate about her island. There’s Bermudian verds in there.

    • Pre Madonna says:

Its a change to see someone running who can speak properly. At least she sounds intelligent unlike most of the people up in the house. And by the way, Nadia can talk Bermudian as well as anyone else – I’ve heard her. But why would someone want to sound dumb just to please a certain section of the community?

    • Hudson says:

I used to teach her and her siblings when they were children. They are as Bermudian as any of us. Lovely family – always involved in the community and helping others. Shocking that people will dismiss her candidacy merely because she doesn’t look enough like them, or speak “Bermudian” enough. What about Kim Wilson – she is articulate, well presented and doesn’t have the um um bermudian accent. Spent a fair bit of time overseas too. Why would the somerset folks embrace her but not Nadia. Someone want to answer that?

  25. Trident says:

the oba is joking, they’re not really trying to won an election. they’re content with keeping their safe seats, collecting $$$ and complaining. The UBP failed to connect to the community and was eventually dissolved like the wicked witch, now the’re doing the same thing, nadia isn’t a get for them, shes a consolation for not being able to get anyone from the community in somerset to run for them. maybe allen temple will come out for her. :-)

    • Tommy Chong says:

Since you’re on relating BDA politics to the story of OZ here’s some related questions. What about plp ministers who if they only had a brain could make good decisions? Then there’s the plp ministers that if they only had a heart would care about Bermuda’s environment & people. Also there’s the plp ministers that if they only had the courage would have confronted the ex premier about his destructiveness. Let us not forget the main character of the story the present premier who is still leading plp supporters down a crooked yellow line to a fake wiz while intelligent worldly ideas pass left & right of them without being looked at.

  26. Cancer says:

Anyone notice.. The OBA rolls out new fresh candidates while the PLP rolls out the same old same old?? Fresh mixure of candidates from the OBA and it was said it would never happen. No new surprises from the flip flop party!

    • Understanding says:

Cancer, as someone said on another thread, “You should write a wonderful piece of fiction entitled, “Bermuda according to Cancer”. It would entertain many.”

    • Understanding says:

Let’s pick apart the latest fiction from Cancer….

      PLP has 36 Candidates:

18 MPs running again. Out of the other 18.. 6 have been candidates before, and 12 are first time candidates.

so 2/3rd of the non-incumbents are first time candidates but you say same old.

      Take your fiction to Amazon.

      • LOL (original TM*) says:

Put it up there with the PLP’s “How to destrory a country in under a decade: Race a Justification for Anything”………………..

        LOL

    • jack says:

the oba is in dire need of candidates to run anywere no right thinking person in somerset would run for them so they had to find someone that could say thay spent time in somerset give the girl a box of kleenex now so she can dry her eyes when she does not get in somerset is plp all the way she will be like a fish out of water when she starts knocking on doors

      • Mountbatten says:

Dennis is …. Dennis . And the people in Somerset are all Mr.Wilson’s . Call it Paula ..!

      • Pre Madonna says:

Yes Somerset is PLP all the way. And people can’t cross Somerset bridge for fear of being shot. Football games have to be cancelled because if threats on lives. People have to be picked up on jet skiis when they leave prison. Is this the Somerset we want? Somerset is in serious trouble – we need new blood to fix it – not tired old self serving PLP blood.

        • Really not cool says:

          @ Pre Madonna

That’s a nice way to get the woman support in Somerset! What a fool you are one of my family members loss their life too a bullet.

What a #%@$ fool you are to even go so low to talk about Somerset. The OBA doesn’t need supports as dirty as your mind thinks. What a sick person you are! In the end it’s all noise some will say but being a black person we feel this deep pain.

I was hoping one of your OBA supporters would challenge you on this, nothing yet. RIP cuz

      • Fed Up Bermudian says:

Jack, you don’t know jack. It would take a lot more to make this woman cry. And she doesn’t give up. I think we’ll be seeing more of her.

  27. Cancer says:

Understanding Cancer being mentioned in other threds…. Hmmm!

  28. THE REALITY says:

I listened to Nadia speak on the news last night and unfortunately i can find NO connection with her as a BERMUDIAN!She definitely DON’T sound like a BERMUDIAN and thats FACT!

    • Hudson says:

What exactly does it mean to “Sound Bermudian”? Please enlighten me.

    • Have a Cold One says:

And Paula Cox, Dr. Brown do? They both speak quite eloquently as someone else said.

  29. Hudson says:

The level of discussion on this board is shocking. I’d expect this from a group of 7 year olds, not adults. Further, it amazes me how fearful society can be of a smart, articulate, and career minded woman! Congratulations to Nadia for throwing her hat into the political arena. She no doubt will face her critics as do all, but its a breath of fresh air to see new faces willing to make their mark. For those armchair critics above, I challenge you to get involved beyond being a paid blogger critizing any comment that goes against your particular party affiliation.

  30. Dame Edna says:

I cannot believe people are criticising Nadia because she can speak properly. Would you honestly prefer it if she spoke like an uneducated fool?

Just listen to that iddiot who is the head of the BIU. He is a fricken embarrassment every time he goes on TV. He sounds as if he is challenged in some way

Nadia can speak and sounds competent – not like a national embarrassment. Any one of our parliamentalarians would do well to listen to her. Or perhaps take electrocution lessons.

    Nadia – you go gurl!

  31. THE REALITY says:

Hey DAME EDNA your talking about someone that speaks with a strong BERMUDIAN accent and your gonna say that he is an embarassment and he sounds challenged in some way. Well guess what you IDIOT the majority of BERMUDIANS sound just like him you FOOL. I know that you DEFINATELY ARE NOT A BERMUDIAN. You’re probably a DISGRUNTLED guess worker. Can’t wait until your visa is expired and you LEAVE because you are too rude and disrespectful. Oh yeah I’m educated with a degree’s (hope u notice the S on the end of Degree). If you associate yourself with NADIA she has ALREADY LOST!

    • JCS says:

Tsk, tsk, you really need to check your spelling and grammar before posting.

  32. THE REALITY says:

@ DAME EDNA so you prabably think we Bermudians are all uneducated fools?

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Just wondering, if you are a product of Bermudas education system, what does that make you qualified for?

      A PLP politician?

      • Mountbatten says:

Vell de weality of it all is dat all vee lot dats Bermudians is gotta go some vere away to get somb type ah papahs .

  33. Bdaboy says:

Just hope the OBA win the next election. PLP are about to put the final nail in the Bermuda coffin !!
