Carifta: Jamaican Coach Not Happy With Sprints

April 12, 2012

Jamaica’s head coach said that their junior sprint coaches need to step up to the plate after being dominated by The Bahamas, the Jamaica Observer reports.

Despite the Jamaicans topping the medal table with over 70 medals, Head Coach Michael Vassell was a bit perturbed after being overshadowed in the sprints by The Bahamas.

“It should be a concern and I think Jamaica’s sprint coaches need to wake up,” Mr Vassell told the Jamaica Observer. “We managed to win almost all middle distance races on display, however, out of the 12 sprints events, we won two,” he said.

The team manager thanked the Jamaicans living in Bermuda for their great hospitality, saying “The accommodation was great, the food was a bit of touch and go because some of the stuff the athletes weren’t used to it, but we were blessed that Jamaicans living in Bermuda under Dr Wesley Miller were able to provide a cooked meal every day for over 84 of us.”

I wonder which food the athletes weren’t used to? Not to concerned though because I’m not used to all the food in JA!

Seriously Michael? What a wonderful guest you are. I can’t imagine going to your country and complaining about the ackee and saltfish, breadfruit, jerk chicken with all the broken bones in it and all the other stuff I am not used to. Grow up into an International Traveller.

As i have been part of a national team traveling overseas with junior athletes – some of them are not always willing to eat food that they are not used to. Unfortunately you need to have them fed so that they are prepared to perform. Therefore i don’t think the comment was a dig against the food provided to them – it was more of a our athletes were not eating as they were not used to certain foods so we had to provide them with foods they were used to so that we can get a performance. That is how i would take it. From my experience that is what i have had to do for my athletes as well!

thanks for your point of view. While Mr Vassall makes a point of thanking the Jamaicans living in Bermuda for their hospitality, I would like to thank: LIME, Dept of Youth and Sports, Ace, Bank of Bermuda Foundation, Powerade, BELCO, asics, adidas, Que Agency, Logic, AFSmith, ICS, buzz, BTC and all the other unnamed supporters of the Carifta 2012 Games in Bermuda, for without their support, these games may not have been possible in Bermuda.

Travelling delegations having grouses about food is nothing new. They said they were not used to certain things so what? FYI Jamaican athletes and coaches travel all over all the time so talking about growing into a traveler is utter you know what.
