Bus Service To Stop For Two Hours Next Week

May 22, 2012

Bus service will be suspended for two hours starting from 10.30am on Tuesday morning [May 29]. Speaking at a press conference this afternoon about Delta’s new flight, Transport Minister Derrick Burgess said the bus service will stop for the workers to attend the meeting.

BIU President Chris Furbert also addressed the issue at a press conference he held over the KFC matter, saying that the bus operators will be voting to ratify the new schedule. The meeting was originally scheduled for this Friday, however Mr Furbert said that upon request from the Minister it was changed to Tuesday.

why not meet after 7pm…..when the shorter routes don’t run…..that way supervisors can cover the operators and drive the main #7 and #8 routes

    • Argosy says:

Get real….this is the PLP (Minister’s the previous BIU boss) “dealing” with the BIU!

      • pepper says:

Why the hell is Derek our deputy premier involved in the B.I.U. I think a show down is about to unfold….members of the B.I.U. must be shaking their heads at what is going on in their union…..I think Derek is trying to smooth the waters….I think the members are just about fed up with brother Chris and the deal with P,H.C. (THE $%^& IS JUST STARTING TO HIT THE FAN)
I hope our new govenor will be more involved in the politics of this god forsaken island…

    • That would be overtime

    • pepper says:

Do you think they give a damn about routes ? this bus situation is a mess and always will be !!!!!!

    • Walla Walla says:

HOW COULD ANY SO CALLED LEADER THINK THIS IS A GOOD IDEA!!!!!! This is not the action of a leader putting the needs of his fellow worker and countryman in front of his own. Is he not on the Turism Board??? These are not the actions of a leader, but rather the actions of a power whore and bully.

Why not meet in groups before or after each shift? Why not print and send put out a flyer or information package in with paychecks, or send an email, or get them information the same what they get it when their is a strike notice. Are these drivers not capable of reading the information put in front of them? Why not put a notice with explaination up on the staff bulletin board? So many better ways that this could be dealt without disrupting service to so many. Is it the hunger for power they crave? Is it the limelight? Or is it just a complete disregard for others ? Maybe just incompetence?

If there was ever a union or even a business that needed a new leader to save itself and the country from imploding and causing its own destruction I think we found it?

I sit here shaking my head at this clown act involving arguably, the two biggest clowns in Bermuda.

    ..enough to make one puke.

  3. I hope they will have updated 2012 bus scheduals

  4. Triangle Drifter says:

    ANOTHER meeting!!!!!

  5. LaVerne Furbert says:

Bernews, that is not Minister Burgess and President of the BIU Chris Furbert speaking on the topic. That is Chris Furbert talking about the lifting of the KFC boycott. The only Burgess in that picture is Ms. Molly Burgess, General Secretary of the BIU.

    • Bernews says:

It is Minister Burgess and Mr Furbert speaking in the video – we spliced the two clips together from the two separate press conferences…

    • Justice says:

      Don’t you mean Sista Burgess?

    • Mbaya Avunaye says:

LaVerne (Ms. Puttoright) Furbert only sees and hears what she wants to hear. She seems like one to complain that she wanted a fired brown egg instead of a white one.

  6. The nitty gritty says:

We interrupt this ridiculousness for a news bulletin-
Delta Airlines’ new flight will be grounded from 8am till 4 pm as the pilots have meetings with their
    flight instructors.
Following close behind this wildcat action are the heart surgeons and oncologists at Lahey who will down tools tomorrow over bloody horrible working conditions.
In sympathy the call centers all across Malaysia will be offline for most of the afternoon while the banks they work for will continue working as if the call centers are too.
When called to respond we were put on hold indefinately.

    • Walla Walla says:

I just thank God that they don’t have control over the Hospitals! Can you imagine?!

  7. Observant says:

And the travelling public???? OOOHHHHH, right…they don’t matter.

    • Tommy Chong says:

Of course the travelling public & their money doesn’t matter because the bus drivers, the minister & biu leader still get paid regardless of wether the the bus service makes money or not. We might as well pay them for sitting on their a$$3$ all day. Oh Right! I remember now! We already do that.

  8. Liars says:

l dont know why there are not anymore white people that look like me in this so-called union…….Chris Furbert for Premeir 2019!

  9. J says:

    BIU is a joke

    • Walla Walla says:

I disagree. In order for a joke to qualify, it has to be funny, it requires content, planning, good timing, and delivery. Oh, and the comedian in order to be funny, should speak clearly. I don’t see any of that here!

  10. Tommy Chong says:

Why does any Bus driver need to stop work for a meeting about a new flight. No one takes the bus from or to the airport because it is to inconvenient & infrequent so this doesn’t concern the bus drivers. Derrick Burgess & Chris Furbert must be drinking from the same jug that intoxicates their ego because they only care to hear themselves talk & not about visitors & locals who rely on the buses.

  11. Joonya says:

Its so embarrassing for Bermuda that unionised service always gets interrupted by regular meetings. Surely we are the only country to do this on a regular/INCONVENIENT basis. Pathetic.

  12. Bright Idea says:

If everyone here would simply email/phone/address their MP and insist that alternative methods be found, we’d here a different tune. And something would be done. We the people have the power but we must use it to make change when those in parliment/government wont. Emails and phone numbers of all mps or potential candidates are below:

  13. will says:

cant the drivers hand in their ballot after they finish their shifts and tally up the results the following day, with no disruption to the bus service…doesn’t anyone think these days!

    • Joonya says:

Yes, they ‘think’ of ways to have time off and still get paid.
      Union workers….SHEESH..

  14. joe says:

Hey, there’s an idea!! An express bus service which leaves the airport at, say, 12, 1, 2 to catch airline arrivals, and it runs up the south shore, stopping at hotels with maybe a connecting shuttle into Hamilton from, say the Ag grounds. Anyway, they could figure that schedule out I’m sure. But the idea….kinda revolutionary for Bermuda. What would the taxi drivers say? Or bus drivers? After all, it can’t be as simple as being about what visitors would want.

    • star man says:

And what are passengers supposed to do with their luggage when they board the bus?
