Sir Richard Gozney Departs Bermuda
[Updated] Former Governor Sir Richard Gozney and Lady Gozney departed Bermuda last night [May 20], with Sir Richard set to retire from the British diplomatic service.
Sir Richard served as Bermuda’s Governor and Commander-in-Chief for four and a half years. His official Departure Ceremony was held on the Cabinet grounds last Friday.
Bermuda Regiment senior officers were on hand last night to bid their former Commander-in-Chief farewell. The DCI photo below shows [L-R] Acting Governor David Arkley, ADC Capt. Mr Fergusson’s last overseas posting was as the British High Commissioner to New Zealand and Samoa, and Governor of Pitcairn, and he also served as Consul-General in Boston. Last month the 56-year-old diplomat was attacked and mugged while walking in London which resulted in the loss of sight in his left eye.
Governor Designate George Fergusson is due to arrive in Bermuda tomorrow and his Swearing-in-Parade will take place at the Cabinet Grounds at 11:30am on Wednesday [May 23].
Update 12.11pm: A statement from Government said: “The arrival of Mrs. Fergusson, wife of Governor-designate George Fergusson, will be slightly delayed on medical grounds. Mr Fergusson is due to arrive in Bermuda on Tuesday 22 May. Mrs. Fergusson will follow as soon as possible.
“Several dignitaries led by the Deputy Governor and the Premier the Hon. Paula A. Cox, JP, MP are expected to be at the L. F. Wade International Airport early on Tuesday evening to welcome Mr. Fergusson when he arrives on the British Airways flight from London.
“Deputy Governor David Arkley will introduce the Premier the Hon. Paula A. Cox, JP, MP, and Mr. N’Keuleu to Mr. Fergusson. His Excellency will also meet Chief Justice Ian Kawaley and his wife, Dr. Janet Ferguson; The Leader of the Opposition, Mr. Craig Cannonier and Mrs. Cannonier; Secretary to the Cabinet, Mr. Donald Scott and Mrs. Scott; Commanding Officer of the Bermuda Regiment, Lt. Col. Brian Gonsolves; Commissioner of Police, Mr. Michael DeSilva and Mrs. DeSilva; and Airport General Manager, Mr. Aaron Adderley before proceeding to Government House.
“On Wednesday morning Mr. Fergusson will be officially become Bermuda’s 88th Governor and Commander-in-Chief of the Bermuda Regiment at a Swearing-in Parade on the grounds of the Cabinet Office, beginning at 11:00 a.m.
“Members of the public are invited to attend the ceremony that will involve The Bermuda Regiment Guard of Honour and various dignitaries led by the Premier, the Hon. Paula A. Cox, JP, MP.”
