  1. Tired of the bull says:

Why doesn’t the Olympic Association take any boxers????? Isn’t that the only sport we actually have a medal in???

    • andre says:

      Not good enough!

    • Family Man says:

Derek’s too busy otherwise he would love to go.

    • Swing Voter says:

yeah bie…..I’m hoping there may be some bronze in the works, sailing stands a good chance and maybe the esquestian…..Track n Field and swimmers and just happy to be there, basking in the after-glow of preliminary heats ;-) Heck I’ll take the trip if I could qualify but my sport is no longer on the menu LOL

    • Mussel Pie says:

What are the qualifying requirements for Olympic selection in boxing?

    • Joey-Bag-O'doughnuts says:

Remember Clarence Hill almost going to the gold medal fight? Then he came back and seemed relegated to play football with the byes at Somerset Primary on Saturdays or Sundays. Man, so were the good old days. Bermuda was a real nice place to experience.

      • Soooooo says:

Hey guys… As much as Clarence made some mistakes… He still represented his country with heart and did better than anyone imagined….

        Good luck to all!!!!

  2. Bermy's Finest says:

I am sure they will take anyone who puts in the work and makes qualifys as per olympic regulations. The can’t advertise people have to apply themselves and show initiative and train to met the standards.

  3. K. Shakir says:

Perhaps we could enter a shooting team in 4 years time!

    • Family Man says:

I know they have a shooting and skiing event in the Winter Olympics. Do they have a shooting and bike riding event for the Summer Olympics?

      • Baltic Fury says:

Yep, the two man, dark visor event, although it is poorly policed. Like the sprints, Jamaica always takes gold, but we aren’t far behind.

  4. M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

Who knows we may just come up with a little something in London .. We have world class athletes and I believe in them .

    • Formidable Deviant says:

We won’t mate, we are pinprick nation.

  5. me says:

JESSICA LEWIS IS A PART OF OUR TEAM AS WELL IN THE PARA-OLYMPICS.

    • Moonbeam says:

Yes JESSICA LEWIS (wheelchair track racing) and SANDY MITCHELL ( equestrian ).
Because they are challenged they have to work ten times as hard for their achievements as an able-bodied athlete. Thus THEY are the real heros !
Shame on Bermuda for treating them (and others) like second rate citizens(and athletes).

      • Bernews says:

Just to clarify….as we try and cover all our athletes as best we can and don’t want it to appear we ignore the Paralympics…the two teams technically come under separate bodies — the Bermuda Olympic Association [BOA] and the Bermuda Paralympic Association [BPARAS] — who issue statements independent of each other about their respective teams.

This was from the BOA, and one official statement from the BPARAS was posted previously [here] and we expect they will release a statement with the official 2012 Paralympic team in the coming days.

We haven’t yet been able to get any official confirmation that Mr Mitchell is competing in equestrian again, but as Ms Lewis is qualified & confirmed we have definitely covered that, especially since she will be the first Bermudian track athlete to ever compete in the Paralympics. Videos/results/interviews with Ms Lewis can be found in a ‘Jessica Lewis’ sub-section [here]

We never get it all, but do always try to cover all sports and athletes as best we can. One of our readers who lives in London has specifically bought tickets to the events Ms Lewis is in, and she is hoping to be able to grab some photos and share with us, so we hope that works out…

        • Moonbeam says:

Thanks for the clarification. No offence was meant to BerNews (you do a superb job.) Perhaps Bermuda Olympic Association (BOA) and Bermuda Paralympic Association (BPARAS) should consider co-ordinating their press releases – especially for such huge world events.

  6. still says:

people are being so critical and simple minded. these are OUR athletes that we need to support them no matter what, not put them down, we dont have a lot of athletes going because for some reason we are considered a part of the Caribbean, this is why only ONE equestrian was allowed to go instead of two.

    GO TEAM BERMUDA.

  7. Fruity says:

What about Snooker?.. its a dying sport! Well gentleman’s game – excellent, and should be more encouraged as well.
