Michael Misick Arrested In Rio de Janeiro

December 7, 2012

[Updated] Former premier of the Turks & Caicos Michael Misick, was arrested this morning [Dec 7] in Brazil.

Mr Misick fled the TCI earlier this year after Interpol issued an international arrest warrant for him in connection with allegations of corruption.

Mr Misick was detained at the Santos Dumont Airport in Rio de Janeiro, the Associated Press reports.

In a release issued by the TCI Governor’s Office, the UK authorities said they were grateful to their Brazilian counterparts for their cooperation are now seeking Mr Misick’s extradition to the Turks & Caicos.

As Mr Misick was born in a British Overseas Territory he is receiving British consular assistance, the release stated, but added that no other comment or details would be given at this time.

Following allegations of widespread corruption in 2009, the UK imposed direct rule on the Turks and Caicos Islands and power was transferred to the UK-appointed Governor. A number of high ranking people were arrested, and Mr Misick avoided arrest by fleeing the jurisdiction.

In March of this year, Mr Misick — who has previously visited Bermuda — announced he had sought “political asylum” in an unnamed country after the arrest warrant was issued for him.

A few days later he issued a statement that said: “I am not a fugitive, and will never be a fugitive. I have applied for political asylum from another country and I am merely seeking protection from political persecution.”

Mr Misick went on to claim that the stories were fabricated by the opposition, the British and their supporters in order to call for a Commission of Inquiry.

The UK recently handed back power to the island, and three years after it was removed from office due to the corruption scandal, the Progressive National Party returned to power after winning the General Election.

The Miami Herald reports that “because of a possibility of flight risk, Mr Misick currently is being held in custody in Brazil.”

Update 9.04pm: The BBC reports that Mr Misick had been living in Rio de Janeiro for months and lived a “sophisticated life”. Mr Misick had apparently sought political asylum in Brazil, but had his request rejected last month. The photo below shows Mr Misick being lead away.

The Jamaica Observer reports: “There was mixed reaction to his arrest in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Some celebrated the news while others lamented it, accusing Britain of running a smear campaign against Misick and his Progressive National Party. Party members called an emergency meeting yesterday afternoon to talk about the arrest.”

great news……and I hope he sings like a canary, and his lyrics include the name of his dear friend here in bermuda…….

    • MAKE MY DAY says:

That would be the *Icing* on the cake!!! Fingers crossed!!

  2. Kathy says:

He is a crook and he is friends with none other than our former premier!

    • Just Us says:

When I last checked, Jesus died for the sins of man. So, because a man shakes another mans hand, does that make him a crook too? If that is the case then, we are all guilty by the money in our pockets…

      • Truth (Original) says:

What a ridiculous analogy. Ewart and Misicks relationship is much closer than that of merely “shaking hands”.

When will you stop defending it?

  3. Meow says:

    Haha

  4. Kim Smith says:

It’s always good news when a fugitive is apprehended… I’ll bet he was surprised.

  5. Pastor Syl Hayward says:

And Turks and Caicos re-elected the same people who did them wrong. I guess the good citizens believed Misick’s defense that ” the stories were fabricated by the opposition, the British and their supporters in order to call for a Commission of Inquiry.”

It isn’t too far-fetched as we have a significant proportion of our population that believes the present and past government leaders are blameless and anything said to the contrary is a plot by white people and house n****rs to bring said leaders and, by extension, quoth a certain body who shall remain nameless, the island into disrepute

      Really Pasta!

    • Ashamed Turks & Caicos Islander says:

Firstly, let me say that I am utterly ashamed by the choices that the people of my country continue to make. However, in the November 2012 TCI Elections, I think the people decided on what they thought was the lesser of 2 evils.

The leader of the opposition party (PDM) has ‘allegedly’ engaged in multiple acts of statutory rape in recent years.

The British are right. Corruption in TCI is a festering cesspool that officials bathe in daily. It sucks to be a Turks & Caicos Islander.

This is one time that I wish I was from somewhere else.

  6. Chilly says:

PNP are now talking independence – presumably as it would allow them to halt the prosecutions of their members for past misdeeds. They have some support from the PDM … for the same reason. TCI makes Bermuda look clean and tidy.

  7. Verbal Kint says:

Nobody really makes Bermuda look clean and tidy.

  8. Living in the dark says:

The people of the TCI really disappoint me, first they elected the same people that set them back 50 years, cause the cost of living to continue to go up, the salaries to go down and gave them not one but two useless hospitals (that current elected ministers and their friends helped put into place because they benefit greatly from it), now they are asking for the leader of the vicious pack to be freed, all i can do is shack my head.

  9. Triangle Drifter says:

Nice to see a positive story every once in awhile. I’m looking forward to the day when Bermuda has a similar one.

  10. Verbal Kint says:

“first they elected the same people that set them back 50 years, cause the cost of living to continue to go up, the salaries to go down and gave them not one but two useless hospitals (that current elected ministers and their friends helped put into place because they benefit greatly from it), now they are asking for the leader of the vicious pack to be freed, all i can do is shack my head.”
Uncanny how you can remove the first part of that quote and it sounds a lot like Bermuda.

  11. Stand Strong says:

After 8 years in a Miami prison for accepting cash for allowing drug-laden planes traveling from Columbia to refuel, Norman Saunders resumed his political career and was re-elected.

    PLP for Life

    • M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

Drugs , cash , political career … Sounds very familiar !!! Hmmm who else could that be ?

      • Y-Gurl says:

Bank robbers , criminals, questionable X- police all seem to do well in the PLP

        • Family Man says:

And don’t forget the Pastor. I thought “men of the cloth” were supposed to have a good sense of right from wrong.

          • M.P.Mountbatten JP says:

I did forget … A righteous landlord who threw their tenants belongings out in the rain . The judge sided with the tenant . He wouldn’t try that caper again .

            • Rick Rock says:

Misinformation. As instructed in the Markham report.

        • Webster says:

What a mess !!!!but the truth will prevail

    • Triangle Drifter says:

Voters are dumb as rocks everywhere. Wasn’t it Washington DC where they re elected a Mayor after he was convicted on drugs & corruption charges.

      • MAKE MY DAY says:

Yup… The infamous Marion Barry – and he did some “jail time” as well!! He is what’s known in the US as an Ex-Con!!

  12. Leeann says:

And they keep electing these terrible bad people because? I’m just asking.

    • Ashamed Turks & Caicos Islander says:

They keep electing these terrible bad people because they are selfish idiots who are looking for handouts regardless of the consequences.

    • Bermuda Girl says:

      People have very short memories……

    • Webster says:

Maybe because of the colour of their skin I am just saying !!!!

  13. Ayisha says:

black power, black panthers, Howard university, lois brown Evans, ewart brown, go fornicate in the bushes, wicked evil white people, they, them, us.

  14. Johnny says:

You all like to disrespect people like you know them, so if we are talking about leaders who steal letss talk about the queen. Nobody has ripped off their country like this woman and her family. And those English people never try to get rid of her. Now those English people must be really stupid to be giving her all their money all these years. How gullable can a person be to believe that god has given 1 family the rule over an entire country …. FOREVER.

Whatever you call premier brown, and all the others that you would probably not even say a word to if you were face to face with them, the ‘royal family’ has been a thousand times worse. And are still doing it. —- that nurse the other day for giving out info on her grand baby, then told everyone it was a suicide.
But I guess that’s ok by you all.

    • Y-Gurl says:

The queen isn’t running in Bermuda, stick to the story your all over the place

    • Widbre says:

I am English and I would love to see the Royal family earn a living and for the Royal family to abolished. No one should have that much authority over the country. Give the money back to the people, PLEASE.

      • vwhat says:

what people? Surely you don’t think the royal family stole it from the people of england. They robbed and stole it from colonies and native people in the far corners or the world. …. Give it back to the people he says. SMDH

    • Webster says:

Two wrongs do not make it right brother.

  15. Crazy Times In BDA says:

I guess the people of Bermuda better pay attention then. Similar crap is going on in this country.

    • Webster says:

The truth is going to come out very soon about the #$%^ that has gone in bda…..
