Bermuda Hosts Transnational Crimes Workshop

The Director of Public Prosecutions in Bermuda, Mr. Rory Field will host the 2013 Commonwealth Caribbean Regional Workshop entitled “Investigating and Prosecuting Complex Transnational Crimes” in Bermuda at the Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel on the 14th and 15th March, 2013.

Attendees will include His Excellency the Governor, Mr. George Fergusson, Attorney General and Minister of Legal Affairs, Mark Pettingill, Chief Justice Dr. Ian Kawaley, US Consul General Robert Settje as well as prosecutors and police officers from the various Caribbean Commonwealth Member States and British Overseas Territories.

A delegation of 11 prosecutors and 11 police from Bermuda will also be participating. There will be opening addresses from His Excellency, the Governor of Bermuda, the Attorney-General and the Chief Justice of Bermuda.

His Honour Judge Michael Hopmeier, Kingston Crown Court, London, will speak on combating economic and financial crime and the challenges in small island jurisdictions.

In addition to local attorneys and Bermuda Police Service personnel, other visiting speakers, panelists and attendees include;

  • Mr. Charles Leacock QC – Director of Public Prosecutions, Barbados
  • Mr. Theo Callamanis, US Department of Justice
  • Ms JoAnn Meloche, Director of Public Prosecutions, the Turks and Caicos Islands
  • Mr. William Nicholson, FBI Assistant Legal Attaché
  • Ms Nicola Sutter, Asset Recovery Legal Advisor for the US Embassy for Barbados and the Eastern Caribbean
  • Mr. Jeff Richstone, Director General and Senior General Counsel, Regulatory and Economic Prosecutions, Canada
  • Mr. Daniel Suter, Criminal Justice Advisor to the Eastern Caribbean
  • Mr. Valston Graham, Senior Crown Counsel, British Virgin Islands.

Approximately 90 people are expected to attend the conference.

A spokesperson said, “The conference will deal with the following matters through presentations, case studies and panel discussions. On day 1 the topics will be Threats to small Jurisdictions: Money Laundering, Corruption, Organised Crime and Gang Crime.

“On day 2 topics will include Practical Solutions: Cross Border Assistance, Asset Recovery and Prosecutors assisting police in the investigative stage.

“Presenters will include relevant experts from the UK, Caribbean, Bermuda, Canada and the USA. Because of the importance of regional networking, there will be a full program of events provided by Bermuda, which will include, a conference dinner hosted by the Director of Public Prosecutions of Bermuda and supported by the Commonwealth Secretariat on the 14th and a reception hosted by the Governor of Bermuda on the final night, the 15th.

“This workshop is substantially sponsored by the Commonwealth Secretariat as part of an ongoing series of events to support prosecutors, build the Caribbean Association of Prosecutors and support other officers in the criminal justice system.”
