As a long time Postal employee I must say that I take exception to some of the comments concerning the situation with the Post office. I have been a postal worker for a long time; so I do have a perspective.
First concerning the current postal administration; they can not be wholly blame for the state of the post office. These are in fact the result of decisions made as far back as under the rule of the United Bermuda Party government. In terms of competition I have serve under at least six Postmasters Generals and one in particular is still upset that the than UBP government allowed the Fedexs; mail Box unlimits to operated in Bermuda in competition with the Post Office on such favourable terms which in fact under mined the competitiveness of the Post Office. The post office has lost a lot a business; particular in the mailing of parcels and such like and the importation of the same. I am not saying that the post office should be given an close market; what I am saying this was an opportunity missed on the part of the post office which at that time the government was not thinking in terms of making it competitive. The idea that you can get away with closing the the delivery aspect of Bermuda’s postal system; is unlikely to be excepted by Bermudians as a whole; Mainly because unlike many countries who don’t have a tradition of home mail delivery; Bermuda has had such a system going back to the early beginnings of settlement. Bermudians are just not going to get use to going to a central point to pick up thier mail. However we should complete; We should adopt the idea of delivering parcels and packages to home adressses; In fact what ever our
competitors are doing; we should do and do so better. All is not lost for the post office in my opinion; we still have the links not only in Bermuda but world wide. We should take advantage of that and put ourselves in a better position to complete.
