Minister Scott: International Day Of Families

May 17, 2013

The Minister of Community and Cultural Development Wayne Scott gave his support to The International Day of Families and the Bermuda Family Council’s efforts to advance social integration and intergenerational solidarity.

May 15th marks the United Nations’ International Day of Families and the theme for this year is “Ensuring Work-Family Balance”.

Minister Scott said policies and programmes promoting social integration and intergenerational solidarity, including family-oriented policies, have been increasingly taking into account the changing roles and demands of all generations.

He said such policies have a potential to contribute to effective public policy by promoting social cohesion, shared responsibility and understanding between generations. “They can be fostered at family, community, society and national levels.”

The Minister added: “International Day of Families emphasizes the significance of families as fundamental units of humanity and provides a chance for governments, organizations and individuals to encourage knowledge of the troubles, strengths and wants of families. It aims at fostering equality, bringing about a fuller sharing of domestic responsibilities and employment opportunities.”

Chairperson of the Bermuda Family Council Christopher Dill said: “In commemoration of this day, the Bermuda Family Council is encouraging all families across this island to engage in activities to foster social integration through linkages with the family of each generation. Such activities could range from organizing family members of all ages to attend a church service, having a meal with such family members, visiting an incarcerated family member; and planning for social interaction with external family members.”
