Increase In Sexual Assaults, Four Arrests Made

July 29, 2013

[Updated with video] The Bermuda Police Service said in recent weeks there has been a “marked increase in sex based and exploitative crimes involving young females,” with 9 reports involving the sexual exploitation of young teenagers in the last 6 days. Police confirmed 4 arrests have been made.

Inspector Mark Clarke, Officer in Charge of the Vulnerable Persons Unit, said, “In recent weeks the Bermuda Police Service has noticed a marked increase in sex based and exploitative crimes involving young females.

“In the past 6 days the Service has received 9 reports involving the sexual exploitation of young teenagers, many of these reports vary in their nature.

“Several of these reports indicated the victims have been lured to locations by persons known to them where upon they have been given alcohol and or drugs.

“Some of these assaults have involved persons unknown to the victim and took advantage of the location where they inappropriately touched, molested or had their private space intruded upon.

“The internet has become a preying ground for sex offenders trying to lure victims. Offenders will try to get specific information without directly asking for it. For example they may ask if your child plays on sports teams which would eventually lead to a discussion of where your child played these games. Ultimately, they want to try to set up a meeting.

“Any person who by means of a communication medium, communicates with a child for the purpose of sexually exploiting a child is guilty of an offence.

“Exploiting our young by these predators is not a new phenomenon. These alarming behaviors will always be unacceptable to those who have the responsibility to protect our children.

“The law is clear; the Criminal Code states that any person who sexually assaults, exploits, lures, administers any noxious substance ie alcohol, drugs is guilty of an offence.

“The Child Act states that any person who places a child in significant harm, willfully abuses or mistreats a child is guilty of an offence. The sexual exploitation of our children are serious offences and will never be tolerated.

“Society should never consider this an acceptable behavior. During the remainder of our summer season we request that all parent know at all times where there children are.

“To those who wish to sexually exploit our children. Know this … we will not tolerate nor stand idly and not act. We will investigate. All proven offenders will expect a court appearance. Simple basic preventative steps will minimize the risk of our child being sexually.”

The following advice was issued by the police:

  • Children are usually molested by people they know – a friend, friend of the family or close relative.
  • Usually children are not violently attacked or physically hurt during such sexual assaults; however, the emotional damage can be severe.
  • Children seldom lie when talking about such matters.
  • When telling you about the attack, children can either appear awkward and ill at ease or relate the details without problems.
  • Alternatively they may not say anything at all. Instead you might observe changes in your child’s behavior or reluctance on their part to be with a certain person.
  • If your child claims to have been sexually molested, tell him or her that he/she did the right thing in telling you about the incident. Give your child your undivided attention and listen closely to what he or she has to say.
  • Let the child know that you are sorry and will protect him or her in the future.
  • Give him/her advice to reduce the risks of becoming a repeat victim.
  • Do not allow request to sleep outside of the family home remain unchallenged. Confirm these request with the opposing parents. Determine who their friends are, ask clarifying questions, demand locations, contact information telephone numbers.

  4. b says:

The heat makes these loser men extra thirsty huh? Women and teen girls should be allowed to carry pepper spray. How are women supposed to protect themselves from these predators? Also women pay attention and be smart. Don’t let any men lure your daughters through social media, monitor their activity and do not let them babysit.

  5. Sadly says:

Sadly a lot of the suspects are not old dirty men but young men similar in age to the victims.

  6. Campervan says:

Shallow gene pool, religious fundamentalism, weird Victorian views on nudity, non acceptance of outsiders ( refer back to gene pool) =high prevalence of perversion.

    @WTF

I TOTALLY AGREE with you 200% ! It is DISGUSTING that newspapers and media outlets can EXPOSE the names, addresses, telephone numbers, and ages of people who have committed much smaller offenses such as skipping Bermuda regiment or riding an unlicensed and uninsured bike or getting caught with 0.02 grams of weed EVEN!!! BUT for PREDATORS that prey on Bermuda’s children and women “they” (newspapers and media outlets) ALWAYS say “FOR LEGAL REASONS WE CAN”T NAME THE PERSON! When i sit back and read this every now and then it INFURIATES me! How is anybody supposed to know who is a PREDATOR in Bermuda if they are NEVA EXPOSED! It makes me wanna have my guard up to everybody! THIS IS A NEWS ALERT ” People skipping army, people riding unlicensed and uninsured cars and bikes and even people that get caught with 0.02 grams of weed is of a much smaller Problem, significance or ISSUE in my life and the lives of THOUSANDS of other Bermudians than an unspecified amount of PREDATORS lurking ALL AROUND BERMUDA UNCHECKED and ABSOLUTELY NOBODY HAS A CLUE WHO THEY ARE !!! Don’t you think!! I have the remedy and the cure for PREDATORS in Bermuda and it would work trust me just do this! EXPOSE THEM!!!!!! Its SO SO simple and I aint even a rocket scientist!! That would make them think twice that’s for sure!!

So, who are these people? Where are their arrest mug shots? Why are they protected?

  9. T.G.A.O.T.U. says:

and who are the racist terrorists spraypainting the hateful death threats about foreigners and Philippinos everywhere?
Why don’t the authorities catch these racists and beat their behinds and backs until they turn blue and bleed? Let the public take turns cracking their worthless backs? then throw em into forced labour with no pay, smashing rocks at Westgate.
in no other country would terrorism and death threats like that be taken lightly. Who knows what is happening to people and not being reported!!!!!!!!!!!
    frickin animals!
