September 13, 2013

70 HSBC staff volunteered a combined total of 228 hours to the Meals on Wheels organisation over a two week duration. HSBC colleagues readily rolled up their sleeves in an effort to assist the organisation with its preparation and delivery of lunch time meals to members of our community. Daily duties undertaken by HSBC staff volunteers comprised of food preparations, kitchen and clean up assistants, and delivery teams. Over 40 members of our community directly benefited from the HSBC/Meals on Wheels volunteer efforts.

Following the success of HSBC Staff Community Action Days, the Bank additionally donated $5,000 to the Meals on Wheels organisation in support of their continuous efforts and provision of services to our local community. Meals on Wheels President, Joe Gibbons responded, “We appreciate the HSBC donation and the interest and generosity of HSBC staff time to work in the kitchen and accompany our drivers. It is very important for Meals on Wheels to maintain relationships with the corporate community because we rely on donations. Opening our doors helps the community to understand what we do. It’s a hands on experience and it’s rewarding to work with HSBC.

Participating staff openly acknowledged a renewed awareness and appreciation of community needs and the importance that our engagement. Glen Madore, HSBC Meals on Wheels spokesperson and Head of Private Banking stated, “Having volunteered for Meals on Wheels on numerous occasions in Canada, I was really looking forward to getting the chance to help with the effort here in Bermuda. In addition to the dedicated group of volunteers and impressive food preparation facility, the lasting memory will be how appreciative everyone who received a meal was. There are a number of individuals on the island who rely on the service and they are very grateful when you arrive. This is an extremely valuable service for the community and we all need to do our part to ensure that it continues and that others are aware.”

Adenike Carmichael, Credit Recovery Manager and Staff member who suggested Meals on Wheels for this Staff Community Action Day said, “There are so many of our senior citizens, who have no family to take care of them. I leapt at the chance to volunteer because Meals on Wheels caters to seniors whom I deeply respect. I didn’t choose my route or my driver but had the pleasure of working with a retiree who was very quick witted and sharp. My driver would stop, I would hop out and take the food to the door, knock and deliver. Everyone I delivered to was happy, had smiles on their faces and were very embracing.”

Irene Noble, Meals on Wheels recipient said, “Your [Meals on Wheels] lunches have been greatly appreciated and I look forward to them. Thank you for helping me in this regard in my ‘old age’.”

In 2006 the Bank launched the Staff Community Action Day Volunteer Programme, providing all permanent, full time HSBC Bermuda staff with time off from work per calendar year to volunteer to assist with preselected projects focused on education, environment and the community. Since inception of the programme, Bank staff have volunteered over 7,500 hours of community service.
