Sandys 360 To Host Youth Basketball League
Sandys 360 Youth Basketball League is back for the Fall 2013 semester with registration on Saturday [Sept 14] from 2pm and practice beginning September 21st.
Coach Jahmal Scott who has been working on this programme, along with the Sandys 360 team and a team of some of Bermuda’s top coaches, anticipates 100 youth males and females between the ages of 5-14 to participate.
“Last year, we had almost 80 students in the programme. It is encouraging to see so many young people interested in learning about the game, and developing healthy habits in playing the game.
“Basketball is slowing becoming a huge sport in Bermuda; there are a lot of young people who enjoy watching NBA games, who now have a chance to develop their skill to aim for that level of play.”
Dr. Melvyn Bassett, Managing Director states, “Ironshore International has continued to support this amazing programme for the 2nd year in a row. We are greatly appreciative of Ironshore and their team for supporting this programme and giving the youth of Bermuda the opportunity to engage in positive activity.
“Over the summer, Sandys 360 was home to a few camps. It is exciting to see so many young people not only interested in playing the game, but are dedicated to becoming the best they can be, on and off the court.”
Coach Scott says, “It is our aim and goal to groom and develop players from a young age. The Sandys 360 Basketball Academy will train players, boys and girls, from a young age, introducing them to the sport and learning the rules. Players then progress into skill development and team play.
“The next step is our older teens with Sandys 360 Team Hurricanes, who continue to develop their skill and knowledge, but also their stamina.
“The 360 Hurricanes play with the Adult League, where some of Bermuda’s top players engage in league play every week. We want our players to play for Bermuda at the national level, participating in amateur and semi-pro games around the world.
“Basketball is an excellent venue for our youth to gain scholarships at nationally rated colleges and universities, allowing them the opportunity to play for college teams and possibly picked up by the NBA and European League. Wouldn’t that be something!”
Sandys 360 Youth Basketball Academy is $100 a term. Parents can collect registration forms prior to the
mandatory registration day on September 14 from Sandys 360 Centre or emailing Coach Scott or info@sandys360.bm.
