18 Year Old Male Flown Overseas After Assault

October 25, 2013

The 18 year old injured in the incident in the Glebe Road/St. Monica’s Road area on Wednesday [Oct 23] has been flown overseas for further medical treatment, and the 34 year old man arrested in connection with the incident has been released on police bail.

The police previously said, “Apparently the injured teenager attended the area with other young people to participate in anti-social behaviour organised through social media,” and said “initial accounts indicate that the incident involved participants engaged in a heated verbal altercation which appears to have escalated into objects being thrown by parties in the area.”

Unofficial reports indicate the 18 year old was hit with a hammer, and a hammer could be seen at the crime scene.

A police spokesperson said, “The 18 year old Pembroke man seriously injured during a reported assault that occurred around 5:45pm Wednesday, October 23rd in The Glebe Road, St. Monica’s Road Pembroke area has since been flown overseas for further medical treatment.

“The 34 year old Pembroke man arrested in connection with the incident was subsequently released on police bail pending further inquiries.

“Detectives continue to appeal for witnesses or anyone who may have seen any suspicious activity in The Glebe Road, St. Monica’s Road Pembroke area around 5:45pm Wednesday.

“Anyone with any information should contact the Serious Crime Unit on 247-1739 or the independent and confidential Crime Stoppers hotline on 800-8477.”

Assuming this young person is not insured, I guess we have to pay the airlift bill along with all other related expenses, as this along with other related cases will result in increased medical insurance premiums. I also assume that once he recovers, if indeed he does, he will refuse to give evidence or make a complaint against his assailant and there will be no conviction even if a court case takes place.
Remind me again please. Just who is running this country?

    • Check your facts..... says:

Exactly my thought as well! The cost of treatment should be borne by the individual not the insurance company as it has been clearly identified that this person was there to cause mischief! If he was the ‘victim’ of an unprovoked attacked, that is different.

A 34 year old allegedly hitting someone with a hammer isn’t the fault of the govt. Watch the documentary ‘freakonomics’ sometime, might help you understand gang violence a little better.

      • Mr. CLEAN says:

SCREW so called gang violence, these guys here havnt a clue what real gang violence is all about and if they ever came across proper gangs as in the USA they would cry for their mama like they always do until uncle eddie comes along and gives them a hug!

        • markus says:

This idea that Bermudians aren’t ‘proper gangs’ is what has lead to the escalating violence imo. Everyone is trying to legitimize their groups through reckless violence. As someone who has lived in America, getting hit in the head with a hammer sounds like something that would happen in a US gang. Getting shot is something that would happen in a US gang. etc etc

        • Tiss Toss Tyrone says:

          Gangster = Coward
Stop glorifying gang lifestyle. The truth is that gangs comprise of weak, cowardly people who are afraid to face the challenge of life like other people.
Gangsters are cowards no matter where you go. The gangsters here are the same as the gangsters in the US. I personally know of Bermudians who become gang leaders in the US because they are more brutal and heartless than the people there. They have something to prove I suppose. A gangster is a coward and it does not take a lot of skill to become a coward. Stop making it out like it’s some profession requiring a high degree of expertise. There is no hierarchy of ‘real gangsters’ vs ‘fake’ gangsters. If you ‘wannabe’ a gangster you ARE one.

What is the government doing about all this violence in Bermuda?

        • Let's Think About This... says:

Why is it just the government’s responsibility to stop the violence? If your family member/friend is involved, you stop them.

    • Family Man says:

Even if he is insured, the insurance company will deny the charge as the injuries if, as it was alleged, were incurred while participating in a criminal act.

  2. Real says:

34 should of set the example the youths in Bermuda need guidence

  3. Really?? says:

These young ppl that live this type of lifestyle all need to go and do something constructive with their lives. Using “Social Media” to arrange such an act….Hmmmm!! Now look where it has landed this 18 yr old. Life is about choices and if this is the type of life they choose to live, then you cannot feel sorry for anyone that brings things on themselves! *real talk*

  4. iBleedRED says:

Wow. This person is being flown overseas because his injuries are extensive and all you people are worried about is who is going to pay the bill.

No I don’t condone the activity or lifestyle but at the end of the day he is someone’s son, grandson etc.

    Have a heart.

    • Tiss Toss Tyrone says:

At the end of the day the person they planned to cause harm to was somebody’s son, grandson etc. Have a heart for the innocent and the victims of these animals not the criminals. My heartfelt sympathy goes to the innocent hammer who didn’t deserve to be caught up in this mess.

  5. Kaprice says:

Send them all to the District of Republic of Congo where being a boy soldier is mot what these guys think it is! They will be crying and begging to leave. neing drigged and brainwashed to fight because the older men do not care whether the boys live or die.they just go and steal more innocent boys and train them. They truly are innocent victims brainwashed and drugged to be killers. Watch blood diamonds. The documentary and the movie.

  6. justMYopinion says:

Sensationalism sells….and that is exactly what has happened here with the police only realeasing “pieces” of information that are sure to spark a negative reaction ….to that I say TYPICAL….

At the end of the day a life is at stake and if WE have to foot the bill so be it. …to say that we shouldn’t because it was HIS fault or because he was involved in antisocial activity is a bit much because if that is the case I, as a non smoker should have an issue with a smoker being insured and treated off “my” money because THEY have lung cancer….I didn’t force them to smoke so why should I have to assist with the bill???….Sometimes we have to stop and THINK before we make a statement…this young mans life hangs in the balance and all some of you can think of is who is going to foot the bill? ….There are much more pertinent questions that need to be answered with the biggest and most important question being “WHY?”…..Why did those young men choose to go there? ..I’m 100% sure that they did not just pull an area out of a hat and decide lets go there and raise havoc. …..
