Man Remanded, Admits Assaulting His Wife

October 4, 2013

Aswad Wilson pleaded guilty to unlawfully assaulting his wife and uttering threatening words to her, and was remanded into custody until next month while a Social Inquiry Report is prepared.

Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions Cindy Clarke told the Senior Magistrate that starting around 1:00am on 3rd October, the 29-year-old had begun beating his wife and that during the course of the beating, the yelling and shouting had woken their two year-old son who had screamed for them to stop.

Ms Clarke said that the assault had continued and had moved into and through the kitchen and bathroom; that at times Mr Wilson had a stranglehold on his wife; and that by grabbing and dragging at her hair, he had pulled several chunks of hair from her scalp. His wife finally managed to get away to a neighbor’s house and Police were called.

Police arrested Mr Wilson who subsequently admitted the assault. His wife was taken to KEMH where was treated for bruises and abrasions and other things.

In Court this morning [Oct 4], Mr Wilson said that he was sorry. He told the Magistrate: “I can’t believe I done that. I’ve apologized to my wife and son.” The Magistrate replied that his past record showed that he was a bully.

  2. Triangle Drifter says:

Gotta love how stuff is phrased in legal jargon. “unlawfully assaulting”.

Under what situation might one lawfully assault somebody?

    • K.T.B. says:

I was wondering the same thing……

    • Next says:

      Google broken?

    • Suzie Quattro says:

Someone might lawfully assault another person if there is consent. For example, if you’re playing rugby voluntarily, you are consenting to the other players tackling you in accordance with the rules of the game. Another example would be in a hospital…you sign a waver to confirm that you consent to the needles being stuck in you, etc.

Unlawful assault is as described in the Criminal Code of course, i.e. threatening or touching another person, etc. It sounds like this might well qualify as the ‘unlawful’ kind…

    • Mike Hind says:

      If I had to guess…

      Self-defense?

      I could be wrong…

    • Come Correct says:

Self-defense or defense of another is grounds for lawful assault.

    • Ride says:

      @Triangle Drifter

I believe that if someone is in the process of unlawfully assaulting you that you may lawfully assault them in order to encourage them cease their unlawful assault.

    • lifeblood says:

One example is a police officer who, in the execution of his duty, may have to physically restrain someone who is violently resisting arrest. The officer is authorized to use force only as much as is reasonably necessary to overcome said resistance. That can be considered an assault which is lawful.

    • fire burn II says:

  11. Wake up Call says:

I’m so glad to see women reporting this and calling the Police, too much bullies out there who call themselves men and think abusing and beating their wives and women is ok. The worst cases are those of foreign women, who when they report the cases of abuse to Women’s Resource Center or Center Against Abuse and the police are quickly toss divorce papers and Immigration is asked to boot them off the island, which they happily do even when the evidence is staring them in their face. Guess Immigration and others supports Bermuda bullies to live another day to bully someone else girl child.

  12. Malachi says:

Is this the week for beating up on your wife!

Been married more than 35 years – never had the will to hit my wife.

If I ever get the urge to beat my wife I will simply leave her!

It’s good to see that some women are finally following through and pressing charges.
(God help the guy who attempts to hit my daughter!)

  13. fire burn II says:

My husband has never had the will to put his hands on me either or ever considered beating me in any sort but I think if I persisted on more than one occassion with attacking him with weapons maybe just maybe he might retaliate …a person can only endure so much before they snap so who is the bully now ??? Cause if you think a woman can’t take you out,you are living in a dream world

  14. fire burn says:

You shut the hell up, nobody is condoning anything there are mere facts here and the fact remains that any one has the ability to snap at any given time but it seems to me you are condoning the shenanigans that he had to put up with

    • famofbothsides says:

Exactly!!! If anybody knew him they would know that he would never put his hands on a woman! So before any of you c**** try to judge know all ya facts! No, it wasn’t right what he done but…….
