Video: Digicel USA, Caribbean Roaming Rates

October 3, 2013

[Updated with video] Digicel Bermuda today [Oct 3] announced its launch of the Digicel USA Roaming Pass and Digicel Caribbean One Rate Roaming – two new products that will see its prepaid and postpaid customers benefit from no opt-in fee when roaming in the Caribbean. The two new products will officially be available starting tomorrow.

Digicel customers now have the option to make calls, email, browse the internet and send text messages overseas worry-free and without the risk of returning home to huge mobile bills.

The new Digicel USA Roaming Pass will allow Digicel customers to subscribe to and benefit from reduced voice, SMS and data rates when roaming on AT&T and T-Mobile networks in the USA. Digicel Caribbean One Rate Roaming will see all Digicel customers automatically switched to the new low rates when roaming on the Digicel network in the Caribbean [except Guyana].

Bermuda customers roaming in other Digicel markets across the Caribbean [with the exception of Guyana] will not have to pay an activation fee for Digicel Caribbean One Rate Roaming. However, for roamers travelling to the USA, the rates included in a Digicel USA Roaming Pass come with an activation fee of $20 for a 14 day prepaid subscription period and $30 for a postpaid subscription period of 30 days.

The Company said it is estimated that roaming costs for Digicel customers using a USA Roaming Pass could drop by 70-90%.

Wayne Caines, Digicel Bermuda CEO, comments, “We’ve performed extensive research across the globe and what we are offering with these roaming products is quite simply the best roaming plan in the world, as it gives customers the freedom to use their phones abroad without having to worry about high costs.

He continues, “We are thrilled to be revolutionising the world of roaming in rolling this out across the region. In doing so, we are ensuring that our customers can use their Digicel phones while roaming without being afraid of high charges.”

Shane McDonnell, Sales Director of Digicel Bermuda adds, “We are excited to be the only wireless network on island to offer such low roaming rates for customers travelling in the US and Caribbean. We have no doubt that once those customers who travel often use the product, they will quickly agree that the savings associated with a Digicel USA Roaming Pass are well worth its minimal cost of $30 for a 30 day period. As the leading wireless service provider to corporate Bermuda we are also pleased to make these products available to business travellers.”

With a Digicel USA Roaming Pass active, customers will pay substantially lower roaming charges of $0.25 per minute for calls, $0.25 per outgoing text message and $0.50 per megabyte of data.

“Ok…so we cut their roaming charges but we’ll still sting their a$$es for more money”

    “How?”

    “Watch me!”

“Oh wow!,that’s so cool, dinner in the Newport Room tonight, bring your partner!”

      PS.
ya like the Red Pan Am uniforms?

    • Gone Gates says:

Okay so let me get this right. I pay a fee each month – even for the months that I don’t travel to the US or Caribbean which is about 6 months a year so my true cost for those 6 months is doubled. Then if I go to the US I have to pay an activation fee, just to get reduced rates. No “x” number of minutes or MD free per day.? Does anyone know how tell how much you will pay when roaming anyone. I’ve asked and nobody could tell me? So if I can’t find out how much I will get charged per minute or MB when I roam now, then why should I trust that you are reducing the rates by 70-90%.

Sorry, I will stick to my T-Mobile Sim card where I pay $60 per month for unlimited calls and data at 4G (including free international calls)only for the months I travel.

    • Umm.... says:

So how do you get calls and texts to your local number while away? And even if you have credit to call international, it will be more expensive than what Digicel has if I’m reading correctly.

There are lots of people who still need to be reached (from kids, elderly, etc) on their local number while away. So using a US sim card isn’t ideal.

      • Chris Famous says:

Option A use your own number and pay x
Option B use a dif number tell your friends the number and pay y

      • frank says:

simple solution don’t roam ever simply go to at&t or T-Mobile
and get a sim card and get connected simple that’s what I do

Digicel should be the color of green. The color of the pee l pee.

  5. Umm.... says:

Gotta see the fine print, Digi. But my contract is up with CellOne in January. So if these roaming rates are legit, I’ll switch.

  6. crackattack says:

Are these rates retroactive? Can I apply it to the $200 I got charged for downloading a whopping 5mb of data while I was stuck in NY because of a canceled flight last month?

  7. Whistling Frog says:

Cheez, I’d break my contract with cell one if this is legit… No Roaming charges?! Thats great! It just shows you how these companies play the greed card at times…

    • Whistling Frog says:

It does say reduced charges… SMH

      • Eyes Wide Open says:

In order to get the new rates you still have to subscribe to the new roaming plans which cost $30 for post paid accounts for 30 days and $20 for pre-paid accounts for 14 days .

These new plans are really only of value for those who use a lot of data or make many roaming calls. Otherwise you won’t be getting any real value and end up paying more.

Regardless, I’ll stick to making free wi-fi calls thanks.

  8. J. P. says:

Um… It’s cheaper to just buy a SIM card from Simple Mobile and pay $40-$60 to activate your phone for one month on prepaid with unlimited data than to use Digicel’s roaming.. I’ve been using Simple Mobile for 2 years now on my iPhone 4S and iPhone 5. Check them out http://www.simplemobile.com and they run on the T-Mobile network.

  9. Vote for Me says:

Bermuda needs someone to interpret the various rates to see which is really better. For all Cell phone / internet providers, the devil is in the detail.

Must comment also that the ‘devil is normally red’… time to stop using the ‘props’ CEO Caines…

  10. Carefree Frequent Traveler says:

AMEN!!! I travelled with my CellOne phone last May- my bill was $700 for a quick shopping trip to NYC and I only used it to keep in touch with my family back home! I tried the T-Mobile prepaid sim thing on my last trip; I found it was great for data, but calling home was really pricey and I topped up over 4 times.

Digicel, when my contract is up with CellOne in the next few weeks you will have a new customer coming to your network!

    • Gone Gates says:

T-Mobile has an unlimited plan that included Bermuda for $10 extra or you can also use Skype for 2 or 3 cents a minute when calling Bermuda. Or if you have Microsoft Outlook 365 you get $20 worth of Skype World minutes long distance to landlines or cell phones free each month.

  11. uhhuh says:

now just lower your monthly fees to under 40 a month and ill sign up asap.not paying over 60 a month for a cell phone in bda ever again.bda is too small for all that
