World Teachers’ Day: ‘A Call For Teachers’

October 4, 2013

World Teachers’ Day is held annually on October 5th to celebrate the essential role of teachers in providing quality education at all levels. The theme for this year is “A Call for Teachers.”

UNESCO will commemorate the day by focusing on the need for quality teachers to build global citizenship and cultural diversity. UNESCO has stated that the main challenge faced by the teaching profession today is one of numbers and quality. With an estimated 1.7 million new teachers required to reach universal primary education by 2015, the recruiting of new teachers must go hand in hand with improving the quality of teaching and learning.

The Minister of Education, Senator Nalton Brangman is marking the special day by thanking teachers for the vital role they have in strengthening our community through quality education.

Minister Brangman stated, “I am taking this most fitting opportunity to recognize educators who are developing our students to be the best they can be. I appreciate the efforts of our teachers who teach, motivate and care for our students for more than seven hours, five days a week. In Bermuda, we have a high level of qualified teachers and the results are evident by the increase in graduation and examination outcomes that was recently announced.”

He added, “The Ministry of Education owes a great debt to our teachers who go beyond the call of duty to support and nurture our students. In keeping with the theme, I encourage our Bermudian students to consider teaching as a career. We need educators who can lead our students to be global thinkers and good citizens in a culturally diverse community.”

“We invite all residents to join us in celebrating teachers and supporting staff for their commitment to helping students achieve their goals.”
