Michael Collins, Senior Executive Vice President Bermuda said, “Health and human services is a major focus of Butterfield’s charitable giving efforts, and as the hospital’s new acute care wing will facilitate and enhance the provision of world-class health care services for all of us who call Bermuda home, we felt it was important to lend our support to BHCT and the Why it Matters campaign.”

The new Acute Care facility has been designed to support and enhance the Bermuda Hospitals Board’s objectives and healthcare delivery philosophy, with special attention to patient-focused care delivery, excellent patient outcomes and a positive environment for clinicians and staff.

Maybe now they can keep the Urgent Care Centre open for 2 more years. $500K less needed to apply from the BHB budget towards the new wing.

    • Come Correct says:

Wishful thinking, the new hospital is way over budget.

    • media says:

They have a $250 million dollar bill to pay for the new acute wing they are building, so your idea wont happen.

      • Really? says:

may i just say……maybe you can help me…..when they announced this project, they repeatedly said that it wouldn’t cost us anything. they said that this type of project, “ppp” was its term i believe (??), was one that the successful bidder would have to finance and maintain this thing. i’m not sure how we got from that to needing to raise $40 million dollars. can anyone fill in the blanks for me please?

they also kept us on track with full page spreads time and again about how within budget they were….when did this change and why? did they do a spread at that time too to explain?

at one point, there seemed to be a lot of different “project managers” on this thing. some qualified and some not so much. the $100K+ salaries would be attractive to anyone though. are these sort of “expenses” part of the budget for the project as well? if so, could this sort of thing attribute to the whole over-budget situation?

sincerely wondering. can anyone help with understanding it all?

        • media says:

The argument for using a PPP is so that the Government does not have to take on the risk of building and the likely over runs that follow. When the project is completed the Government then takes over the building based on a fixed amount. So the reason for the $40 million dollar fundraising effort over the past year was to pay for the initial payment that will come due on handover, now delayed until mid 2014. How they will manage to pay the remaining $200 mil over the next 30 years is anyones guess, although the Lamb Foggo UCC closure is one way, with an overall savings to them of over $2.25 mil per year. That is the equivalent of one months payment …We should be happy they never built that big new Hospital Ewart Brown, so wanted to build in the Botanical Gardens. It would have been closer to $1 billion owed…

interesting. thanks for that media. ok, so i’m stuck on the “maintain” part then. they used to say finance and maintain, finance and maintain….it’s not going to cost the public. if govt is taking it over, what was the point of the “maintain”? so to be clear then, that successful bidder won’t be maintaining after all??

so if govt takes over will it be a real take over and not a quasi-govt facility anymore? what ever was the point being quasi anyway? i could tell it had a protection-like effect on accountability tho.

        • aceboy says:

They said it would pay for itself and then immediately started a trust headed up by Ewart’s half brother to collect donations to pay for it.

        • Concerned says:

how many remember the commercial that should one word
          C O K E

yup – and it got and still has us drinking it…. that was how those advertising spreads got many people convinced re Really’s? comments

          • Really? says:

mhm. i haven’t followed every single report on this project but it confuses the crap outta me how people can’t see the what was (said) then and what is (said) now. we pretty much have every right to ask a question or two about this conflicting message but as usual, the silent thing fares better than speaking up.

instead, a catchy “this is why it mat-ters” jingle and some colourful stickers and air fresheners for your car became all the rage. sure, we need this facility update, of course we do, but sheesh people pay attention! kinda reminds me of that halloween candy warning….and the all that glitters isn’t gold adage….and….yeah, people pleeeease pay attention!

i wonder how many that are livid about this lamb foggo closure also happy go lucky donated to this campaign not knowing how the tables would turn. unfortunate. surely they would have preferred to donate to “what matters.” if they were in the east during fabian, they surely know what matters alright.

  4. SoTrue says:

Honestly, isn`t that our money being donated. Guess that’s why the banks are charging me $1 a month on every savings account I have.

  5. College student says:

Those contractors connected to the previous govt, made out/ are making out like bandits,on the hospital job. That unnecessary building was contracted to enrich the few.It will be the final nail in the fiscal coffin of Bermuda. We will be all made to struggle because of the incompetence and greed of the 8 previous years. The public/private partnership,is code for expensive, wasteful and unaccountable spending.
Wait till you see what you get for the price paid!
