2-Storey Home Sustains Damage In Paget Fire

[Updated] A fire broke out in a two story Paget house at approximately 11.30pm last night [Dec 10] in the Bostock Hill East area, marking the second fire of the day following the small brush fire in St David’s.

Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service attended the scene and extinguished the blaze. We unofficially understand that no one was in the home at the time of the fire. We will update with details as able.

Update 1.39am: Divisional Officer Troy Furbert said the Fire Service received a call at 11.21pm and on arrival at Bostock Hill East found a 2-storey structure well involved on two floors.

Four fire fighters wearing breathing apparatus entered the structure and brought the fire under control in about 20 minutes. An investigation is underway to determine the cause of the fire. The home was unoccupied at the time of the fire and was under renovations.

Update 4.30am: The owner of the house posted on our Facebook page, saying that they just purchased it and the house was empty. They had been pushing to get a few renovations done so that they would move in for Christmas, and this was the last week before everything was due to be completed.

Update 4.33pm: Fire Service spokesperson Lieutenant Leonard Davis said, “At approximately 11:20pm on Tuesday December 10th, the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to a report of a 2-story dwelling involved in fire near Bostock Hill East, Paget.

“The Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service responded to the incident with 5 fire appliances staffed with 13 firefighters.”

Sergeant Danon McGowan stated that “upon the arrival of the Fire Service, there was thick black smoke and flames seen during our approach. Firefighters dressed in breathing apparatus and equipped with a 1½” hose line began to extinguish the fire.

“Once the fire was brought under control, the firefighters made entry into the premise to carry out ventilation and an internal search for potential victims. The dwelling sustains structural damage and extensive smoke damage.”

Lieutenant Leonard Davis would also like to express the gratitude of the Bermuda Fire and Rescue Service to off duty firefighter Nakia Pearson and an unknown bystander for their quick thinking in using a garden hose to contain the fire prior to the arrival of the fire service.

Lieutenant Davis stated that “this is an unfortunate incident which has occurred. This fire had the potential to be a lot worse had these two individuals not intervened.” At present the fire is still currently under investigation.
