24 New Records Set At Swim Championships

March 25, 2014

The Schroders Spring Swimming Championships were held this past weekend, with over 20 records falling as some of the island’s best swimmers hit the pool.

Speaking after the meet, Coach Richard Goodwin said “From a National perspective having this level of results at this point in the season can only build confidence in what the Bermuda program can produce.

“Lisa Blackburn showed good promise in the 50 breast with a time in striking distance of the Commonwealth Games qualifying standard. Roy-Allan Burch continues to improve and the changes in stroke and power were evident in his performances over the weekend even though he was not rested for the meet.”

Championship-Winners

He continued, “Sharks swim club is very proud of our 5 age group champions, 12 age group records and 2 National records that were produced over the 4 day competition. More importantly I would like to highlight the overall performance of the team with 144 personal best swims which were produced by swimmers that have competed in these events several times over the season.

“It is always great for the team to produce when they are expected to produce and confirms the hard work that has been put in to our club training over the season so far is paying dividends. The rigorous schedule of stroke development, land based strength and conditioning provided the base that produced this results.

“Ashley Irby had a breakout meet for the season when she produced 6 personal best swims and showed her ability in both free and back as she prepares to swim these events for Bermuda at Carifta. Isabelle Dutranoit who will be swimming in her first Carifta this year was able to produce 6 personal best times with two of them at the A standard in her new age group of 13-14.

“Skyler Powell gave us a glimpse into next year’s Carifta with her 5 personal best times with 4 of them at ‘A’ standard. 10 year old Jessica Bruton was able to swim 6 PB’s all at AA standard. She has to wait another year to be eligible for Carifta but is impatient and has already set her first time in the 11-12 age group. Ciara Henschke produced 6 personal best times and is recovering nicely from her broken arm earlier this season.

“Shannon Hassell returned to form with 4 personal best times and 2 swims at AAA. She moved up an age group during the meet with her 15th birthday. Jesse Washington continues to build toward Carifta with very strong swims that produced record times. He will be looking forward to his training camp in Charlotte when he travel with his swimming mentor Roy-Allan Burch this Saturday.

“Maddie Moore was in spectacular form for this meet. She had 7 personal best swims in her 7 events and produced 8 age group records. 2 of her swims were at AAAA standard and her 50 free time was only 6 points away from Lisa Blackburn’s high point winning swim. Her performances at this beet will help to build her confidence into her new age group at Carifta.

“Rebecca Heyliger was home on break from USC and was in a dual with Lisa Blackburn in the 100 IM while also producing a very strong swim in the 50 fly. She returned to USC on Sunday and will be back to training in preparation for making her Commonwealth Games time.

“Having our big Shark Roy-Allan Burch back on Island was a treat for all spectators at the BASA pool over the weekend. You could hear the crowd gasp at the sheer speed and power of his swims and his amazing swim technique. He will be staying on island for this week while giving motivational talks to several Bermuda public schools, swim sessions to young swimmers and clinic at the BASA pool for Masters and also for young up and coming swimming stars.

“Training will resume immediately as we prepare for Carifta in April and the local calendar will see Best of Best 3 in May followed by National Championships in June.

“Harbour continued into the first major meet of the year carrying much of the form which has seen over 400 personal best times in this season. With a total of 6 new national records for the club, Emma Harvey, once again led Harbour with some spectacular performances, setting new times in the 100IM, 200IM, 50fly and 100fly and 200 backstroke.

“The rapidly improving Nick Brando, who has forced his way into the Carifta team with significant improvements in 2013-14, managed to break the 200 Backstroke National Record in the 11/12 age group. This record, was previously held by two time Olympian, Roy-Allan Burch, who was present at the meet to see his mark bettered and offer his congratulations to Nick.

“Jack Harvey performed strongly with some significant time improvements and remains one to watch as he narrowly missed National Records in multiple events, whilst Max McCrimmon reached the necessary time to allow him to attend the BASA Squad training.

“Zeb Wakeley, who only started swimming in September 2013, made significant time drops continuing the rapid improvement shown since the start of the season. With heats and finals swum for the first time in 2014, swimmers had multiple swims, and over 200 personal best times were recorded by the Harbour swimmers.”

As Harbour continues to add new aspects to its training routine, the developments continue to pay dividends as evidenced with the results. Head Coach Shona Palmer stated, “It is fantastic to see so many outstanding performances, from National records to swimmers who are participating at this level for the first time. Our team of coaches continue to focus on both technique, athletic development, and fun as we work with the swimmers to maximize their potential in and enjoyment of the sport.”
