March 18, 2014

On 19 March, the Barbados Museum & Historical Society will launch a new book on museums in the Caribbean and Bermuda, entitled Plantation to Nation: Caribbean Museums and National Identity.

Sir Trevor Carmichael, the Council President of the Museum, will deliver the feature address at the launch, followed by remarks by the Director of the Museum, Ms. Alissandra Cummins, Dr. Edward Harris, Director of the National Museum of Bermuda, and Ms. Hilde Neus, Education Officer, Suriname Museum Foundation.

While not in the Caribbean, the Editors wished to have a contribution from Bermuda and thus the book includes a chapter by Dr. Harris on the evolution of the Bermuda Maritime Museum into the National Museum of Bermuda.

Other chapters are related to museums in the English-speaking Caribbean, as well as those in Haiti, Suriname and Martinique, to name a few. The sixteen contributors to the book have been invited to Barbados for the launch, which will be held at the Barbados Museum & Historical Society.

Dr. Harris noted, “It is a honour for the National Museum of Bermuda to be included in this new book on museums of the Caribbean, as we have many historical and cultural connections with that region. Personally, one of my great great grandfathers came from Barbados to Bermuda, so there I am also somewhat of a ‘belonger’.”

A copy of the book will be presented to the National Library upon Dr. Harris’ return.
