“Hind Grounds” To Close To Fishing From May

The Department of Environmental Protection said they would like to advise the public that, as of May 1st 2014, the “hind grounds” will be closed to fishing.

A spokesperson said, “Last year boundaries of the southwestern seasonally protected area were changed so the Department is urging the public to familiarize themselves with this area.

“Since the 1970s, certain areas in the waters around Bermuda have been closed to fishing during the summer months in order to protect hinds and groupers from excessive fishing when they come together in large groups to spawn.

“Commonly known as the “hind grounds” or “grouper grounds”, fishing is prohibited in these areas from May 1st through August 31st each year. The extended closure areas are closed until the 29th of November each year.

“The Department urges the public to abide by these and all other Fisheries Regulations in order to help conserve our local fish stocks.”

    Alright…but here…put this area on the gps chip that goes to the tablet and or gps fishermen use and turn tbe restricted area on when this time period comes to pass…talk is cheap and fines unessessary….don’t give us no blank stare …just do it…or resign!

    Fisheries keep reducing the size of the protected hind grounds. They say they do it because of research but where is that to?
