PLP Pledge To Include Opposition MP In RIMS

May 1, 2014

The PLP “supports Government’s efforts at the RIMS Conference” and “pledge that under a future PLP Government, to be inclusive and invite the relevant Shadow Minister to participate,” Shadow Finance Minister David Burt said.

Premier Craig Cannonier recently attended the 2014 Risk and Insurance Management Society [RIMS] Conference & Exhibition in Colorado, where he was accompanied by the Minister of Finance Bob Richards, Minister of Business Development Dr. Grant Gibbons and Secretary to the Cabinet, Dr. Derrick Binns.

Mr. Burt said, “The Bermuda Progressive Labour Party supports Government’s efforts at the RIMS Conference as we believe it is important that we continue to attract not just additional insurance businesses to Bermuda, but jobs for Bermudians in the insurance industry.

“As part of our new ideas and solutions, we pledge that under a future PLP Government, to be inclusive and invite the relevant Shadow Minister to participate as delegation members in important global conferences such as RIMS.

“It is our view that potential investors should see a bi-partisan team representing Bermuda overseas as we seek jobs and opportunity for Bermudians.

“Governments may change, but Bermuda’s continued commitment to the insurance industry knows no party – and a united front at global events would reassure industry players that Bermuda will remain open for business regardless of the political party in office.”

As an election pledge in the lead up to the 2012 General Election, the OBA said they would invite an Opposition MP to sit in Cabinet, with reports saying they approached MP Kim Wilson, who declined the offer citing logistical issues correlated with the Westminster system.

  1. Spittal pond skink says:

In the same manner that the previous PLP gov. did… ? It is always great the things that are said when not in power!

  2. James says:

So basically they are still looking for trips even in opposition!

  3. agreed but.... says:

Buuuuuuut wasn’t it the plp who chased IB away? I don’t think we can have a bipartisan political arena in bda!

    • Impressive says:

PLP didnt chase IB away, that record is scratched, play another tune man.

      • JD says:

I see so you must believe that raising payroll tax without consulting anyone in IB had no effect.

        Got it.

And all that talk about restricting expats from buying cars, no impact there either right?

  4. Navin Johnson says:

and were you ever inclusive during the 14 year reign of financial and fiscal terror?

  5. Onion says:

The PLP had a chance to join the OBA Cabinet and rejected every olive branch made to them. They also had every chance when they were government to tap expertise in the opposition during their time in government and instead attacked the experts on economics.

Now Burt just wants a chance to promote himself so he’s changing tune.

    • 32n64w says:

100% correct. It’s all about self promotion … on the taxpayer’s dime of course!

  6. in the know says:

More hog wash coming from the washed up plp… how in one breath your calling your opposite demonic & preformers of dark arts & also saying you don’t trust them. But now you want to work with them when your govt but can’t when your opposition…. stop the hog wash &lies David, you and you plp mates are just after the power

  7. Onion says:

On the up-side if the PLP were government and brought OBA MPs to RIMS it would make Bermuda look better, so we should support them in that.

  8. Feel Good says:

Keep talking smack OBA supporters. While you feel good dissing the PLP at every opportunity the voters are paying attention to the changes within the PLP as well as the rhetoric spouting from the OBA. So please keep talking and insulting half of the country, after all we are just the dumb Bermudians right? Your efforts will help the PLP at the next election, especially those who didn’t come out because they could never trust the OBA but had grown tired of the last PLP administration.

    • Anon says:

I agree that talking “smack” isn’t the way forward and that when the PLP shows ideas such as this to bring the two parties together they should be embraced. BUT, the PLP also needs to stop with the dirty, very dirty politics and the OBA also needs to stop reacting to it.

    • wow says:

and watch what happens when and if the plp gets elected again, same **** that was happening for the last 14 years! this aink a game or competition, that’s how you fools treat it though…smh

    • Mike Hind says:

So… no comment on the filthy, filthy things that PLP supporters say?
No comment on the lies spread? The disgusting personal attacks? The outright falsehoods presented as fact?

      Nothing?

      • Ringmaster says:

@ Feel Good. The PLP is the PLP despite so much effort in trying to ignore the period from 1998 – 2012 and each change of leadership in between. They are politically astute enough to allow the likes of Marc Bean and Marc Daniels to try and put on the new face publically but the old guard are still in control.

  9. swing voter says:

Burt, yur jokin right? cuz um laughin regardless ;-)

  10. jt says:

What ecactly have the PLP done or said since being in opposition that would give the governemnt the slightest bit of confidence that their presence at the RIMS conference would be supporive of the efforts being made and produce positive results? I’d be scared ***tless to take them along for fear of what might come out of their mouths.

  11. Unbelievable says:

Ha! That was something I posted on Bernews a few days ago – that the OBA should take a PLP MP with them to RIMS for see if they would toe the line.

So not an original idea, Burt.

  12. nuffin but the truth says:

“pledge that under a future PLP Government…”

how the defunct plp love to dream..it’s NEVER going to happen…you lot are finished, done, kaput.
