BJGA Kicks Off Summer Golf Programming
The Bermuda Junior Golf Association [BJGA] is getting set to kick off its summer programming today [June 30] with the HSBC Junior National Championships at Belmont Hills.
A spokesperson said, “The defending champion, Walker Campbell, is returning for the event. Other contenders will be Lewis Daley and Cory DeSilva, who are both off to university in the fall, and Arriek Douglas, who is back from boarding school.
“In the open division, Kenny Leseur will be the hot favourite to defend his 2013 title. Luke Watson has returned from boarding school and will be looking to pull off a surprise, however. Tyler Emery is another locally based player who is capable of pushing Kenny this week.
“The qualifying round is on Monday, June 30, with matches starting on Tuesday, July 1. The finals will be held on Friday, July 4; all matches will take place at Belmont Hills, with tee times beginning at 10.00am. The BJGA is also running a full summer of programming which has been sponsored by HSBC.
“Finally, the BJGA will be working with Sergio Edness, a young Bermudian who has started a golf services enterprise – EdnessGolf – to provide us with Tournament Director and programme coordinator support this summer.”
The summer programming flier says, “The BJGA is aiming to attract 50 new golfers to the sport this summer and have them ready to join the BJGA’s programming in September. The HSBC Summer of Golf is comprised of a series of programmes designed to give new junior golfers a chance to experience the game of golf and also to further develop the skills of those junior golfers already in BJGA programming.
“The HSBC Summer of Golf is comprised of the following:
HSBC National Championships: This match play event will see the 2014 National Champion of Bermuda junior golf crowned at Belmont Hills. This event is designed for established golfers with a verified handicap index. There will be two divisions – Championship and Open.
HSBC Summer Golf Camp: For the first time, the BJGA will host a golf camp in the evenings during the week of July 7. The Bermuda Golf Academy will host the camp with instructors from clubs across the island coming together to teach brand new golfers the fundamentals of the game of golf. The Camp will touch on all aspects of the game of golf – grip, full swing, pitching, chipping, putting and the rules of golf and etiquette. This camp is for potential golfers who are not part of the regular BJGA programme or who had joined since January 2014.
Family Fun Day: This is a chance for the participants in the HSBC Summer Golf Camp to show their parents what they have learnt over the course of the camp and to have some fun. Fun Golf [or mini-golf] is a great way for parents to be involved in their junior’s golf interest without needing golf knowledge themselves.
HSBC Summer Tour: This summer tour, running for five weeks following the camp is designed to reinforce the basic skills taught at the camp and to get the juniors some experience being on the golf course. To accommodate as many golfers as we can, the Tour will be run from two venues – Riddell’s Bay Golf Course in the west on Tuesdays, and Tucker’s Point Club in the east on Thursdays – and will be modelled on the drive, chip and putt concept. Juniors from the HSBC Summer Golf Camp may choose one venue to attend. The HSBC Summer Tour will culminate with the a skills challenge model led on the drive, chip and putt concept following the first round of the HSBC International Classic on Tuesday, 26 August at Tucker’s Point Club.
HSBC Week of Golf: This week is comprised of two golf tournaments, the HSBC International Classic played at three venues from August 26-28 [Tucker’s Point, The Mid Ocean Club, and Port Royal Golf Course] and the HSBC Junior National Par 3 Championships at Turtle Hill Golf Course at Fairmont Southampton. Each tournament will have a novice division which will be played over 18 holes per tournament [3 rounds of 6 holes in the HSBC International Classic and 2 rounds of 9 holes at the HSBC Junior National Par 3 Championships].
