Retail Sales Increase 5.4%, Liquor Sales 26.4%
Retail sales in April 2014 rose 5.4% or $4.4 million above the $81.9 million recorded in April 2013, and after adjusting for inflation, the volume of retail sales increased by 3.7%.
Liquor stores registered the largest gain in sales — increasing 26.4% — which the report attributed to the Easter holiday being celebrated in April this year versus March in 2013.
Residents returning to the island declared overseas purchases valued at $4.9 million during April 2014. This contributed to a combined local and overseas spending total of $91.2 million.
After adjusting for the annual retail sales rate of inflation, measured at 1.6% in April, the volume of retail sales increased by 3.7%. There were 25 shopping days during the month, one less than in April 2013.

You can buy beer on Sundays in 2014 that you couldn’t in 2013. And April was great boating weather this year.

I’m sure I alone added a few percentage points to the liquor sales. Looks to be a long blurred summer for me.

There is a very logical reason for large increases in beers, wines and spirits sales this April. In March of 2013 the Government announced that duty was going to increase on these products on April 1st and people bought to avoid this and so in April of last year stocks were high in shops and so they purchased far less than normal which makes this April look very good
